    School Play Activities: Assessment of Educators’ Knowledgeability of Physical, Creative and Cognitive Development of Basic Education Children

    The purpose of the research study was to assess the educators’ knowledgeability regarding children’s physical, creative and cognitive development through play activities in Basic Education schools in Uyo Urban of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. It was assumed that the findings of the study would help educators to have an understanding that pupils’ play activities should not be regarded as time for children to expend excess energy while the teachers take rest. A 5-point structured questionnaire with 30 item-statements based on the fundamental principle of Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) was used to elicit opinion from the respondents. A sample of 180 educators randomly drawn from 18 Basic Education schools in Uyo Urban was surveyed. The reliability index of the instrument was 0.78 determined through Cronbach Alpha method. The data collected were analysed using frequency, percentage and the rank order statistics. The findings of the study showed that educators implementing the Basic Education programme are quite knowledgeable of children’s physical, creative and cognitive development through school play activities but the highest ranking goes for the physical development. This seems to suggest that the goals of play activities are not mutually exclusive, hence, children’s development should be considered wholistically through play activities.     Reduction of the Radiofrequency Heating of Metallic Devices Using a Dual-Drive Birdcage Coil

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.In this work, it is demonstrated that a dual-drive birdcage coil can be used to reduce the radiofrequency heating of metallic devices during magnetic resonance imaging. By controlling the excitation currents of the two channels of a birdcage coil, the radiofrequency current that is induced near the lead tip could be set to zero. To monitor the current, the image artifacts near the lead tips were measured. The electric field distribution was controlled using a dual-drive birdcage coil. With this method, the lead currents and the lead tip temperatures were reduced substantially [<0.3 C for an applied 4.4 W/kg SAR compared to >4.9 C using quadrature excitation], as demonstrated by phantom and animal experiments. The homogeneity of the flip angle distribution was preserved, as shown by volunteer experiments. The normalized root-mean-square error of the flip angle distribution was less than 10% for all excitations.     Geochemistry of Ekenkpon and Nkporo shales, Calabar flank, SE Nigeria: implications for provenance, transportation history and depositional environment

    The Cretaceous Nkporo and Ekenkpon Shales within the Calabar Flank were investigated using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES) to deduce the provenance, transportation history and depositional environment. The results show the dominance of SiO2 (45.27 – 46.45%; 44.50 – 54.83%), Al2O3 (22.27 – 23.57%; 19.20 – 20.20%) and Fe2O3 (8.30 – 9.04%; 5.64 – 7.30%) constituting the bulk major oxides of Nkporo and Ekenkpon Shales respectively. The Index of Chemical Variation (ICV) ranges from 0.42 – 0.56 and 0.57– 0.68 for Nkporo and Ekenkpon Shales respectively, suggesting moderate and high degree of weathering. The enrichment of Sr (124 – 350ppm; Nkporo Shale and 176 – 856ppm; Ekenkpon Shale) compared to Post Australian Archean Shale (PAAS; 14.6ppm) could be attributed to feldspars in the source area, and is easily incorporated in the clay minerals of the shales. Also the values of Th and U which are 15.00 – 17.20ppm; 14.6- 23.2ppm and 3.5-4.2ppm; 1.9-6.2ppm respectively in Nkporo and Ekenkpon sediments show enrichment compared to PAAS of 14.6ppm and 3.1ppm for respective values of Th and U. The Eu anomaly of 0.04 to 0.07 suggests felsic source rocks for both formations while plots of TiO2 vs. Al2O3 indicate an intermediate to dominantly felsic granodiorite source for both shales, with little input from felsic volcanic provenance plus traces of quartzose sedimentary rocks. The mobility of Na, Ca, and K due to progressive weathering of the shales is evident in the bivariate plots of Na2O wt% vs. PIA, CaOwt% vs. PIA and K2O vs. PIA. Values of Th/U ratios range from 3.37 – 4.91(Nkporo) and 3.10 – 7.68 (Ekenkpon), indicating moderate to high weathering and reworking of sediments. It is envisaged that the area is associated with passive to active continental margin tectonics, where sediments were mainly sourced from felsic rocks of the adjoining terrain and deposited in oxic, continental to transitional marine environment based on Al2O3– K2O +CaO+MgO-Fe2O3+MgO; AKF plot.KEYWORDS: Cretaceous, Calabar Flank, provenance, transportation history, depositional environment

    Long term management of obstructive sleep apnea and its comorbidities

    Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a worldwide highly prevalent disease associated with systemic consequences, including excessive sleepiness, impairment of neurocognitive function and daytime performance, including driving ability. The long-term sequelae of OSA include and increase risk for cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and metabolic syndrome disorders that ultimately lead to premature death if untreated. To ensure optimal long-term outcomes, the assessment and management of OSA should be personalized with the involvement of the appropriate specialist. Most studies have demonstrated inmediate improvement in daytime somnolence and quality of life with CPAP and other therapies, but the effect of long-term treatment on mortality is still under debate. Currently, the long-term management of OSA should be based on a) identifying physiological or structural abnormalities that are treatable at the time of patient evaluation and b) comprehensive lifestyle interventions, especially weight-loss interventions, which are associated with improvements in OSA severity, cardiometabolic comorbidities, and quality of life. In long-term management, attention should be paid to the clinical changes related to a potential reoccurrence of OSA symptoms and it is also necessary to monitor throughout the follow up how the main associated comorbidities evolve

    Data mining experiments on the Angiotensin II-Antagonist in Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation (ANTIPAF-AFNET 2) trial: ‘Exposing the invisible’

    Aims: The aims of this study include (i) pursuing data-mining experiments on the Angiotensin II-Antagonist in Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation (ANTIPAF-AFNET 2) trial dataset containing atrial fibrillation (AF) burden scores of patients with many clinical parameters and (ii) revealing possible correlations between the estimated risk factors of AF and other clinical findings or measurements provided in the dataset. Methods: Ranking Instances by Maximizing the Area under a Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) Curve (RIMARC) is used to determine the predictive weights (Pw) of baseline variables on the primary endpoint. Chi-square automatic interaction detector algorithm is performed for comparing the results of RIMARC. The primary endpoint of the ANTIPAF-AFNET 2 trial was the percentage of days with documented episodes of paroxysmal AF or with suspected persistent AF. Results: By means of the RIMARC analysis algorithm, baseline SF-12 mental component score (Pw = 0.3597), age (Pw = 0.2865), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) (Pw = 0.2719), systolic blood pressure (Pw = 0.2240), and creatinine level (Pw = 0.1570) of the patients were found to be predictors of AF burden. Atrial fibrillation burden increases as baseline SF-12 mental component score gets lower; systolic blood pressure, BUN and creatinine levels become higher; and the patient gets older. The AF burden increased significantly at age &gt;76. Conclusions: With the ANTIPAF-AFNET 2 dataset, the present data-mining analyses suggest that a baseline SF-12 mental component score, age, systolic blood pressure, BUN, and creatinine level of the patients are predictors of AF burden. Additional studies are necessary to understand the distinct kidney-specific pathophysiological pathways that contribute to AF burden. Published on behalf of the European Society of Cardiology.     Using Satellite Data To Improve Land Value Estimations In Bolivia

    Precise land valuation is necessary for an efficient allocation of resources at the private level, and territorial planning and provision of public good at the government level. This information can be obtained from real data transactions in limited areas where they occurred, leaving the rest of the land valuation depending on precise estimation models. These estimation models may use sold land characteristics to forecast the value of land with similar characteristics, by using existing data (i.e. returns on land, productivity, surface, soil maps, precipitation data, land use constraints by law, etc.). In many low and middle-income countries this data is scarce, limiting the possibility of developing these models. This information gap may be filled using satellite data. This study uses average biomass production estimations based on satellite data as a proxy for fertility. By using biomass production estimates for Bolivia over a period of 6 years, together with administrative land transaction data and geographical maps including precipitation, average temperature, slope, distance to closest road, to closed local and national markets, we are able to significantly improve previous land price models. This improvement allowed us to develop a land price index to inform farmers about current price trends and expected sale price for their own land

    Low temperature transport measurements on superconducting film - normal metal wire - superconducting film (SNS) junctions fabricated on the basis of 6 nm thick superconducting polycrystalline PtSi films are reported. The structures with the normal metal wires of two different lengths L=1.5 μ\mum and L=6μ\mum and the same widths W=0.3μ\mum are studied.     HER2 Overexpression and Cytogenetical Patterns in Canine Mammary Carcinomas

    Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is a tyrosine kinase receptor that promotes tumor cell growth and is implicated in the pathogenesis of human breast cancer. The role of HER2 in canine mammary carcinomas (CMCs) is not clear. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the protein expression and cytogenetic changes of HER2 and their correlation with other clinical-pathological parameters in CMC. We retrospectively selected 112 CMCs. HER2, ER, and Ki67 were assessed by immunohistochemistry. HER2 antibody validation was investigated by immunoblot on mammary tumor cell lines. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was performed with probes for HER2 and CRYBA1 (control gene present on CFA9). HER2 protein overexpression was detected in 15 carcinomas (13.5%). A total of 90 carcinomas were considered technically adequate by FISH, and 8 out of 90 CMC (10%) were HER2 amplified, 3 of which showed a cluster-type pattern. HER2 overexpression was correlated with an increased number of HER2 gene copies (p = 0.01; R = 0.24) and overall survival (p = 0.03), but no correlation with ER, Ki67, grade, metastases, and tumor-specific survival was found. Surprisingly, co-amplification or polysomy was identified in three tumors, characterized by an increased copy number of both HER2 and CRYBA1. A morphological translocation-fusion pattern was recognized in 20 carcinomas (22%), with a co-localized signal of HER2 and CRYBA1. HER2 is not associated with clinical-pathological parameters of increased malignancy in canine mammary tumors, but it is suitable for studying different amplification patterns
