Choroid Plexus Papillomas in two Siblings: Case Report [İki Kardeşte Görülen Koroid Pleksus Papillomu: Olgu Sunumu]
Choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) is a rare, benign epithelial brain tumor of the nervous system seen particularly in infants. Familial cases are extremely uncommon. Some other form of malignant tumors was noted in the relatives of patients with CPPs, and some genetic defects regarding this coincidence were reported in the literature. These neoplasms are occasionally bilateral and hydrocephalus is an associated sign in most of the cases. We report three lateral ventricle CPPs in two siblings, at the age of 7 month and 2 years respectively. All tumors were resected with parietotemporal craniotomy and a superior temporal sulcus approach to the lateral ventricle. To avoid a concomitant need of ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion, external ventricular drainage was inserted for a week in the postoperative period relieving symptoms of hydrocephalus. Search for a hereditary defect in the p53 gene of the second infant (7 months old) revealed no mutation. Postoperative courses were uneventful and the patients were followed for three years without any recurrence. Bilateral CPPS are rare and unusual in two siblings. A genetic predisposition such as the p53 mutation should be investigated in bilateral CPPs in particular
Occurrence of fumonisin in processed and low processed corn-based products in Turkey
A total of 92 corn-based food products consisting of 53 low-processed and 39 processed samples were collected at random from retail markets and bazaars in various provinces of Turkey and analysed for total fumonisin levels. Twenty oneTwenty-one (40%) low-processed and nine (23%) processed samples were found to contain fumonisin. Total fumonisin contamination in the low-processed products ranged from 0.8 to 273 273 mg. mg kg-1, and in the processed products from 0.3 to 76.8 mg kg-. Considering all 92 samples, the highest frequency of detection and also the highest concentrations (in flour samples up to 273 mg kg-1) were detected in low-processed products. These results indicated the natural contamination of fumonisins corn-based low-processed and processed food products for human consumption in Turkey by fumonisins
Effect of caffeic acid phenethyl ester on corneal neovascularization in rats

Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), a biologically active component of propolis from honeybee hives, has potent antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties. We aimed to evaluate the ability of topically applied CAPE in comparison with known steroidal (dexamethasone sodium phosphate) and nonsteroidal (indomethacin) topical agents to reduce corneal neovascularization (CNV) induced by silver nitrate cauterization in rats. Methods. Following silver nitrate cauterization on both eyes, male rats were randomly assigned to the study and control groups, each consisting of ten rats. The inhibitory effects of the test drugs against a placebo (isotonic saline) on CNV were tested and compared to each other using a previously described method in which extent of neovascularization and burn stimulus intensity were scored by a masked examiner. Briefly, burn stimulus intensity was scored from 0 to + 3 according to the height of blister from corneal surface, and extent of neovascularization was recorded from 0 to + 6 according to the distance from limbus to the end point of CNV toward the central corneal burn. Results. The mean burn stimulus score were not different among the groups (P=0.807). Percent inhibition of CNV compared to the placebo control and its significance were 31.5%, P=0.011 for indomethacin; 56%, P0.05) dexamethasone in reducing CNV. Conclusion. Topically applied CAPE was demonstrated to have an inhibitory effect, comparable to that of topical dexamethasone, on CNV in this rat model. Antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties of CAPE may contribute to its suppression on CNV
Comparison of platelet rich plasma versus fibrin glue on colonic anastomoses in rats
PubMedID: 29768536Purpose: To compare platelet rich plasma (PRP) and fibrin glue about the effect of anastomotic healing.Methods: Thirty six Wistar-Albino male rats diveded into 3 groups according to control(Group1), PRP (Group 2) and fibrin glue(Tisseel VH) (Group 3).The colon was transected with scissor and subsequently an end to end anastomosis was performed using continuous one layer 6/0 vicryl sutures.Postoperative 7th day effect of anastomotic healing measuring with tissue hydroxyproline(TH) level and anastomotic bursting pressure(ABP); moreover comparison of cytokine (IL-6 and IL-10) and procalcitonin levels on 1st,3rd and 7th days.Results: There was no statistically significant difference of the ABP and hydroxyproline levels between PRP and fibrin glue on the 7th day.There was no statistically significant difference between levels of proinflammatory cytokine (IL-6) (P=0.41), anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10) (P=0.35), and procalcitonin levels (P=0.63) on 1, 3 and 7 days.Conclusion: Fibrin glue and platelet rich plasma are shown to be effective in healing intestinal anastomoses without superior to each other. © 2018, Sociedade Brasileira para o Desenvolvimento de Pesquisa em Cirurgia. A pig model for the histomorphometric evaluation of hard tissue around dental implants
PubMedID: 21651415This study aimed to evaluate the frontal bone of Swiss Domestic pigs as an animal model for the histologichistomorphometric examination of bony tissue around dental implants. We inserted SLA surface implants 4.1 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length into the frontal bones of 9 Swiss-Domestic pigs. Histologic and histomorphometric studies were conducted on the undecalcified sections. Histologic examinations showed that the specimens contain a sufficient amount of bone to provide homogenous bone coverage for standard diameter dental implant placement. The mean bone to implant contact was 61.9% 6 8.7%. Other histomorphometric parameters revealed the regular trabecular architecture at this site. Pigs' frontal bone appears to be a suitable animal model in short-term dental implant studies because it provides a sufficient amount of bone and favorable bone microarchitecture

Polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in amniotic fluids of pregnant women in south-central Turkey†
The concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in amniotic fluid of 200 pregnant women from the Cukurova region of Turkey. The concentrations of OCPs [hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane (p,p'-DDT), and various metabolites], and different PCB congeners (28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153, 180) were determined by gas chromatography with electron capture detection as follows: HCB 6.6 ± 4.7, ?HCH 21.6 ± 14.2, ?DDT 12.5 ± 7.5, and ?PCBs 74.0 ± 54 ng mL-1. Correlations of maternal or gestational age and levels of OCPs and PCBs were not significant. The levels of these organochlorine compounds (OCs) were below detection limit for 5% of the samples, 80% contained more than one OC. The relationship between uretero-cloacal structure in birds and sigmoidorectal pouch surgery
Purpose: The present study was planned to investigate morphological, functional and histological properties of the natural ureterocloacal for in birds as well as to provide an appropriate information which may contribute to rectosigmoidal pouch surgery and to decrease its complications. Materials and Methods: Thirty chickens (Gallus domesticus, 26 broilers, 4 layers) with a mean weight of 1870 +/- 88 g were used for this study. Histological and morphological evaluation of the cloaca was performed. Urethral reflux was estimated using X-rays. Results: We found that the cloaca had three parts from cranial to caudal: coprodeum, urodeum and proctodeum respectively. A coprourodeal fold (CUF) between the coprodeum and urodeum and a uroproctodeal fold between the urodeum and proctodeum were detected. Settling of the muscle clusters both in the ureter and urodeum near the opening area appeared to be a strong sphincter structure and the ureters are opened to a structure covered by a transitional epithelium, which is similar to bladder in humans (connecting two identical epithelia). According to X-rays following the administration of a radio-opaque substance, there was no ureteral reflux in any of them. Conclusions: The natural urointestinal structure in birds has a spontaneous ureterointestinal anti-reflux opening. The coprourodeal fold that prevents the mixing of faeces and urine, inhibits the effects of increased pressure and prevents the reflux of urine to the upper segments is provided with many of desired hinders properties for urointestinal diversion
Lawsonia inermis - an alternative treatment for hyperthyroidism?
PubMedID: 24601697Aim: The goal of our study was to determine the effects of Lawsonia inermis (L. inermis) in mice, in which hyperthyroidism had been caused by thyroid stimulant hormone (TSH). Material and method: The first phase of the study aimed to detect the effects of L. inermis on the amount of ionized hydrogen (pH) in cells. For this aim, the effect of L. inermis on pH levels in the liver tissues of mice, in whom Escherichia coli (E. coli) had caused peritonitis, was examined. In the second phase of the study, the effect of L. inermis on the serum T4 levels in the 24th and 48th hour in mice, whose thyroid cells showed an increased activity by TSH was measured. Results: In the first phase, in mice, in whom E.coli had caused peritonitis, the pH in the liver tissue of the group that had been given L. inermis was found to be signifi cantly alkaline (p<0.05). In the second phase, in mice, in whom TSH had caused hyperthyroidism, it was noted that serum total T4 levels were signifi cantly lower than in the group that had been given L. inermis in the 48th hour (p<0.05). Conclusion: In our study, we detected that L. inermis signifi cantly decreased serum total T4 levels in the 48th hour in mice in whom TSH had caused hyperthyroidism. These results suggest that L. inermis can be used as an alternative treatment for the Graves' disease (Tab. 2, Fig. 1, Ref. 34). Text in PDF www.elis.sk
The protective role of jervine against radiation-induced gastrointestinal toxicity
PubMed: 30871382In this study, we investigated whether jervine (J) could prevent gastrointestinal (GI) side effects of abdominopelvic radiotherapy (RT) in Wistar-Albino female rats. Rats were divided into five groups: control (C), J only (J), J administered at 5 mg/kg/days for 7 days, RT only (RT), J before RT (J + RT), J administered for seven days before RT, J both before and after RT (J + RT + J), and J administered for 7 days before RT and after RT for 3 days. The weights of rats were measured on the 1st, 7th, and 10th days of the study. Rats were sacrificed to obtain tissues from the liver and intestine, which was followed by taking blood samples intracardially. In addition, the tissues were stained with pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) immunohistochemically. In our study, J supplementation markedly reduced weight loss, and histopathological, immunohistochemical, biochemical results suggest that J had a protective effect on GI toxicity following RT. © 2019, © 2019 The Author(s).
