Effective colloidal processing for densification before SPS

In conventional dry processing, fine particles tend to agglomerate spontaneously due to Van der Waals attractive forces. Since the agglomeration of particles forms large residual pores in green bodies, elevated temperatures are necessary for densification. Colloidal processing is a very effective technique for controlling the pore size distribution in green compacts before sintering. The green compacts having small residual pores with a narrow size distribution is expected to enhance the densification at low sintering temperature during SPS. We already reported that colloidal processing for controlling the packing structure in green compact is effective for densification in SPS in the case of SiC. A commercially available SiC (6H) powder with the average particle size of 0.55 mm was used as the starting materials. When using the dry processing for consolidation, the density of the sample sintered by SPS in a vacuum atmosphere at 1950°C was 92% of the theoretical value. Aqueous suspensions with dispersed particles were prepared by adjusting pH and consolidated by slip casting to prepare the dense green compacts. The relative density of SiC prepared by SPS was increased with increasing temperature and reached more than 97% at 1950°C as shown in Fig. 1. In this presentation, this processing was applied to fabrication of transparent alumina. Commercially available Al2O3 powder with the average particle size of 0.4 mm was used as the starting materials. Suspensions with 30 vol% solid were consolidated by slip casting. The green compacts before sintering were further densified by cold isostatic pressing at 392 MPa for 10 min and calcined at 500°C for 1 h in air in order to burn off the dispersant. Final sintering was carried out at 1150°C under a uniaxial pressure of 100 MPa using an SPS. After rapid heating to 600°C, the temperature was raised from 600°C to 1150°C using a heating rate of 5°C/min. After holding samples at the sintering temperature for 10 min and then subsequently annealing them at 1000°C for 10 min, we obtained a sintered disk with a diameter of 25 mm and a thickness of 2 mm. Fig. 2(a) shows the photograph of the sample from the green compact prepared by slip casting, Fig2(b) is the sample densified by SPS from the as-received powder directly. The transparency of the sample prepared by slip casting is clearer than that of the sample by SPS from the as-received powder directly. Please click Additional Files below to see the full abstract

Observation of the distortion around Ga lattice sites due to the residual hydrogen in GaN single crystal wafer

In RBS channeling experiments, the slight de-channeling phenomenon of Ga was observed from the depth of about 250 nm in depth behind the surface peak in un-annealed GaN single crystal wafers. In ERDA experiments using 1.8 MeV He^4+ beam, the hydrogen concentration (4.8 x 10^14 cm^-2) in un-annealed GaN was about the twice of that in 900 oC annealed one, suggesting that part of the residual hydrogen was out diffused by annealing. The existence of the minute displacement of Ga in un-annealed GaN was associated with the Ga displacement arising from the complex defect of the residual hydrogen and Ga. This phenomenon corresponds to the appreciable relaxation of Ga atoms toward H proposed by Myer et al. The slight de-channeling phenomena of the Ga atom observed in the RBS channeling experiment disappeared in association with the reduction of hydrogen due to out diffusion of hydrogen in the annealed wafer

    Get PDF
A case of inverted papilloma arising in the maxillary sinus is described. The first symptoms were rhinorroea and discomfort of the left infraorbital region. A biopsy obtained by penetration into the maxillary sinus resulted in a diagnosis of chronic sinusitis. However, the surgical specimen showed characteristic inverted epithelial proliferation. Two years after operation by the Caldwell-Luc method, there are no signs of recurrence. The diagnosis and treatment of inverted papilloma are discussed

SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2 at z=5.74z=5.74 is Gravitationally Magnified by an Intervening Galaxy

During the course of our optical deep survey program on Lα\alpha emitters at z5.7z \approx 5.7 in the sky area surrounding the quasar SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2 at z=5.74z=5.74, we found that a faint galaxy with mBm_B(AB) 25\approx 25 is located at \timeform{1".9} southwest of the quasar. Its broad-band color properties from BB to zz^\prime suggest that the galaxy is located at a redshift of z1.5z \sim 1.5 -- 2.5. This is consistent with no strong emission line in our optical spectroscopy. Since the counter image of the quasar cannot be seen in our deep optical images, the magnification factor seems not to be very high. Our modest estimate is that this quasar is gravitationally magnified by a factor of 2.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, PASJ, in pres

Phase Lag Analyses on Ictal Scalp Electroencephalography May Predict Outcomes of Corpus Callosotomy for Epileptic Spasms

Objective: We aimed to clarify the patterns of ictal power and phase lag among bilateral hemispheres on scalp electroencephalography (EEG) recorded pre-operatively during epileptic spasms (ESs) and the correlation with the outcomes following corpus callosotomy. Methods: We enrolled 17 patients who underwent corpus callosotomy for ESs before 20 years of age. After corpus callosotomy, seven patients did not experience further ESs (favorable outcome group), and the remaining 10 patients had ongoing ESs (unfavorable outcome group). We used pre-operative scalp EEG data from monopolar montages using the average reference. The relative power spectrum (PS), ictal power laterality (IPL) among the hemispheres, and phase lag, calculated by the cross-power spectrum (CPS) among symmetrical electrodes (i.e., F3 and F4), were analyzed in the EEG data of ESs from 143 pre-operative scalp video-EEG records. Analyses were conducted separately in each frequency band from the delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma range. We compared the means of those data in each patient between favorable and unfavorable outcome groups. Results: Among all frequency bands, no significant differences were seen in the individual mean relative PSs in the favorable and unfavorable outcome group. Although the mean IPLs in each patient tended to be high in the unfavorable outcome group, no significant differences were found. The mean CPSs in the delta, theta, and gamma frequency bands were significantly higher in the unfavorable than in the favorable outcome group. Using the Youden index, the optimal cutoff points of those mean CPS values for unfavorable outcomes were 64.00 in the delta band (sensitivity: 100%, specificity: 80%), 74.20 in the theta band (100, 80%), and 82.05 in the gamma band (100, 80%). Subanalyses indicated that those CPS differences originated from pairs of symmetrical electrodes in the bilateral frontal and temporal areas.Significance: Ictal power and laterality of the ictal power in each frequency band were not associated with the outcomes of CC; however, the phase lags seen in the delta, theta, and gamma frequency bands were larger in the unfavorable than in the favorable outcome group. The phase lags may predict outcomes of CC for ESs on pre-surgical scalp-ictal EEGs

The Discovery of a Very Narrow-Line Star Forming Obat a Redshift of 5.66ject

We report on the discovery of a very narrow-line star forming object beyond redshift of 5. Using the prime-focus camera, Suprime-Cam, on the 8.2 m Subaru telescope together with a narrow-passband filter centered at λc\lambda_{\rm c} = 8150 \AA with passband of Δλ\Delta\lambda = 120 \AA, we have obtained a very deep image of the field surrounding the quasar SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2 at a redshift of 5.74. Comparing this image with optical broad-band images, we have found an object with a very strong emission line. Our follow-up optical spectroscopy has revealed that this source is at a redshift of z=5.655±0.002z=5.655\pm0.002, forming stars at a rate 13 h0.72 M\sim 13 ~ h_{0.7}^{-2} ~ M_\odot yr1^{-1}. Remarkably, the velocity dispersion of Lyα\alpha-emitting gas is only 22 km s1^{-1}. Since a blue half of the Lyα\alpha emission could be absorbed by neutral hydrogen gas, perhaps in the system, a modest estimate of the velocity dispersion may be \gtrsim 44 km s1^{-1}. Together with a linear size of 7.7 h0.71h_{0.7}^{-1} kpc, we estimate a lower limit of the dynamical mass of this object to be 2×109M\sim 2 \times 10^9 M_\odot. It is thus suggested that LAE J1044-0123 is a star-forming dwarf galaxy (i.e., a subgalactic object or a building block) beyond redshift 5 although we cannot exclude a possibility that most Lyα\alpha emission is absorbed by the red damping wing of neutral intergalactic matter.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. Human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are established by introducing several reprogramming factors, such as OCT3/4, SOX2, KLF4, c-MYC. Because of their pluripotency and immortality, iPSCs are considered to be a powerful tool for regenerative medicine. To date, iPSCs have been established all over the world by various gene delivery methods. All methods induced high-quality iPSCs, but epigenetic analysis of abnormalities derived from differences in the gene delivery methods has not yet been performed. Here, we generated genetically matched human iPSCs from menstrual blood cells by using three kinds of vectors, i.e., retrovirus, Sendai virus, and episomal vectors, and compared genome-wide DNA methylation profiles among them. Although comparison of aberrant methylation revealed that iPSCs generated by Sendai virus vector have lowest number of aberrant methylation sites among the three vectors, the iPSCs generated by non-integrating methods did not show vector-specific aberrant methylation. However, the differences between the iPSC lines were determined to be the number of random aberrant hypermethylated regions compared with embryonic stem cells. These random aberrant hypermethylations might be a cause of the differences in the properties of each of the iPSC lines

Science Advances 10, eadi1621 (2024); https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.adi1621.The function of germ cells in somatic growth and aging has been demonstrated in invertebrate models but remains unclear in vertebrates. We demonstrated sex-dependent somatic regulation by germ cells in the short-lived vertebrate model Nothobranchius furzeri. In females, germ cell removal shortened life span, decreased estrogen, and increased insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) signaling. In contrast, germ cell removal in males improved their health with increased vitamin D signaling. Body size increased in both sexes but was caused by different signaling pathways, i.e., IGF-1 and vitamin D in females and males, respectively. Thus, vertebrate germ cells regulate somatic growth and aging through different pathways of the endocrine system, depending on the sex, which may underlie the sexual difference in reproductive strategies

Background. The aim of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of serum N-glycan profiling for prognosis in hemodialysis patients. Methods. Serum N-glycan analysis was performed in 100 hemodialysis patients in June 2008 using the glycoblotting method, which allows high-throughput, comprehensive, and quantitative N-glycan analysis. All patients were longitudinally followed up for 5 years. To evaluate the independent predictors for prognosis, patients' background, blood biochemistry, and N-glycans intensity were analyzed using Cox regression multivariate analysis. Selected N-glycans and independent factors were evaluated using the log-rank test with the Kaplan-Meier method to identify the predictive indicators for prognosis. Each patient was categorized according to the number of risk factors to evaluate the predictive potential of the risk criteria for prognosis. Results. In total, 56 N-glycan types were identified in the hemodialysis patients. Cox regression multivariate analysis showed cardiovascular events, body mass index, maximum intima media thickness, and the serum N-glycan intensity of peak number 49 were predictive indicators for overall survival. Risk classification according to the number of independent risk factors revealed significantly poor survival by increasing the number of risk factors. Conclusions. Serum N-glycan profiling may have a potential to predict prognosis in patients undergoing hemodialysis

金沢大学医薬保健研究域医学系Purpose Diabetic patients have a high risk for cardiovascular events. The role of myocardial perfusion imaging was investigated in asymptomatic diabetic patients to evaluate short-term prognosis in a Japanese population. Methods A total of 506 asymptomatic patients ≥50 years of age who had carotid artery maximum intima-media thickness ≥1.1 mm, urinary albumin excretion of ≥30 mg/g creatinine, with additional criteria of abdominal obesity, low HDL cholesterol, high triglyceride level, and hypertension were enrolled and followed up over a 3-year period. Gated SPECT with stress-rest protocol was performed and analyzed by summed defect scores and QGS software. One-year cardiovascular events were analyzed. Results Myocardial ischemia was observed in 17% of patients, and abnormal perfusion findings of ischemia and/or scar were observed in 32% of patients. By the end of the 1-year follow-up, 33 (6.5%) cardiovascular events occurred including 6 all-cause deaths. Patients with summed stress score (SSS) >8 had a higher incidence of either death or cardiovascular events. Event-free survival rates for SSS 0–3, 4–8, 9–13, and ≥14 were 0.96, 0.95, 0.82, and 0.76, respectively. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that significant variables were SSS, history of cerebrovascular accident, and electrocardiographic abnormality at rest. Conclusion The 1-year interim summary showed that cardiovascular events were significantly higher in patients with SPECT abnormality, although hard cardiac event rate was relatively low. Targeted treatment strategy is required for asymptomatic but potentially high-risk diabetic patients
