    Kinect-ed Piano

    We describe a gesturally-controlled improvisation system for an experimental pianist, developed over several laboratory sessions and used during a performance [1] at the 2011 Conference on New Inter- faces for Musical Expression (NIME). We discuss the architecture and performative advantages and limitations of our gesturally-controlled improvisation system, and reflect on the lessons learned throughout its development.     Interacting with the piano : absorbing technology into piano technique and collaborative composition : the creation of 'performance environments', pieces and a piano

    This thesis explores the expansion of the piano performance environment, using technology to augment the sound, the playing area of the piano and its surroundings, and/or the performer's own body in controlling electronic elements of the music. In particular I examine the extension of piano technique and how this is affected by adding technology. I also discuss collaborative compositional processes in creating co-authored musical works and have given a critical appraisal of the different technological systems used in all of these pieces. I have also introduced ideas about developing the structure of the piano to better suit contemporary techniques and the addition of technological elements in piano playing. These ideas are represented by my own "Inside-out Piano", illustrated within the thesis. Throughout this work many new pieces for piano and live electronics have been generated and I hope these may also be useful as a resource for other pianists exploring their own interactions with the piano.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

    Pre-Departure Orientation for Outbound College Students

    This is a Pre-departure Orientation for Outbound College students designed to focus on non-traditional aspects of issues that need to be accounted for in preparation for a study abroad experience. It is a training designed for four trainers. The intent of the training is to heighten participants\u27 awareness of motivation for participating in a study abroad experience, one\u27s self identity, and how one\u27s self identity affects the group dynamics. The Purpose, Goals, and Objectives are as follows: Purpose: To provide a framework in which participants can consider less explored aspects involved with studying abroad. Goal: To explore issues of self-awareness and factors influencing a study abroad experience. Objectives (Participants will be able to): Identify and reflect upon personal behavior or attitudes that may affect an overseas experience. Increase their awareness of less explored issues and how they affect group dynamics
