A challenge for educational theatre: directing Edward Bond’s The Children: an interview with David Allen
David Allen is the Artistic Director of the Midland Actors Theatre. He has
produced plays such as Waiting for Godot (2000), Lady Chatterley’s Lover (2001)
and Macbeth (2004) but undoubtedly his greatest challenge as director was the
production of The Children by Edward Bond in 2003. The experience took place at
Washwood Heath Technology College in Birmingham with a group of Year 10 and
11 pupils. As part of the Theatre in Education paradigm, the play demands the
involvement of young people in the problems of their own lives
Sarah Kane’s opera prima, Blasted, was extremely criticized since its première in 1995 for its transgressing presentation of the reality of the Yugoslavian war. This article proposes a revision of this initial criticism, near censorship, an overview of the central aspects of the play to conclude with its present consideration as a social icon of contemporary English drama. This approach leads our analysis through the radical change that the image of the last damned author in the English stage has suffered and how she has been vindicated worldwide by temporal distance
Edward Bond, English playwright from the sixties, proposes in “The Sea” a revision of the Victorian myths and the discrimination of social classes. His main character, Mrs. Rafi, clearly embodies the principles of matriarchy and its elements of domination in the rural landscape of England at that time. This article proposes an exhaustive analysis of the power relations between Mrs. Rafi and the rest of the characters of the play with a profound critical component. Mrs. Rafi, trapped in her own unreality of high class lady, constantly despises her neighbours and eliminates any possibility of evasion or liberation. Nevertheless, the oppressor shows to be so trapped as the oppressed in a socially moralized system.peerReviewe

Fomento de la lectura en AICLE
Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)
has been largely implemented in our educational
institutions through different approaches. CLIL can
encompass a wide variety of teaching resources
but this new framework should constitute an innovative
perspective to overcome the restraints
of traditional school curricula in the teaching of
foreign languages. Promoting reading skills comprehension
is also considered essential in the
CLIL approach (Wolff, 2005). However, despite its
importance, few studies have focused their attention
on the reading skills of CLIL in Spain (Pérez
Cañado, 2012). The starting point of this study
remarks the concept of reading as a complex process
which involves different skills and strategies,
also reinforced by the Common European Framework
of Reference for Languages as a key element
in the learning process. The first part of this article
presents a general framework of CLIL as a methodological
approach followed by an overview of
the reading skill and its main characteristics and
potentiality in the classroom. The second part of
the article provides guidelines regarding the strategies
and types of reading activities that may help
students become proficient readers.

A heroine’s story: pacifism and madness in Edward Bond’s The Woman
In The Woman,
Edward Bond proposes the possibility to analyze the development of a revolutionary female
figure, unique in the English stage of the seventies. Subverting the submissive voice of
women in the ancient Greece, Ismene stands as a clear example of political and social
conscience showing her capacity of rational and responsible leadership. Yet, after the failure
of her objectives, madness will be her solution to escape from the destruction of Troy. The
Woman’s heroine, a clear symbol of pacifism against imperialist fever, will transcend gender
questions to become the speaker of political issues

New Trends in Foreign Language Didactics Applied to Professional Environments: Audiovisual Recording with Interdisciplinary Approach
The didactics of foreign languages applied to professional environments has
experimented a decisive methodological renovation in the last years. Autonomous learning
and the development of communicative and intercultural competences are presented as effective
proposals for the adequate training of university students. This article presents the
experience of a teaching-learning interdisciplinary activity using the audiovisual recording
of a promotional video about the agriculture sector in Almeria as a motivating resource in
the language learning process. This activity also states the advantages of autonomous and
collaborative learning and the familiarization of the student with the agriculture industry in
Almeria and its efforts to develop sustainable agriculture. Students and professors assessment
confirm the achievement of the initial objective
