W pierwszej z nich zostały pokazane, w perspektywie długiego trwania, podstawowe uwarunkowania sytuacji ekologicznej województwa katowickiego. Autorzy, odwołując się do dokonań teorii rozwoju zależnego (teoria de la dependencia), zwracają między innymi uwagę na znaczenie funkcjonowania kolonizacji wewnętrznej dla postępującej degradacji regionu. Social transformation of great mining regions : experience of the 20th century : prospects for the 21th century (the case of Upper Silesia, Poland)

This article, which deals with civilizational challenges of Upper Silesian mining communities at the end of the 20th century, consists of five complementary parts. In Part I, we present a diagnosis of economic and social situation of this catastrophic and scansen-type region of Poland and Europe. Part II deals with the history of mining local communities, from the early years of this branch of industry (which are given documentary evidence) to the end of the Second World War. In Part III, we reconstruct the changes within these communities in the time of real socialism (1945-1989). In the next part, we suggest necessary and radical changes in ,UPPer Silesian mining and associated social structure. The last part of an article is an attempt to describe a regional social agreement called the Regional Contract. The Document was prepared in the Katowice voivodship in 1995 by numerous economic institutions, political parties, trade unions, social and cultural organisations. Katowice – moje miasto osobiste

Artykuł jest próbą zastosowania koncepcji miasta osobistego do analizy Katowic (miasta osobistego autora). Rozpoczyna się od przypomnienia podstawowych tez koncepcji miasta osobistego według Andrzeja Majera. Następnie pokazuje, jak Katowice są prezentowane w literaturze. Kolejna część stanowi próbę spojrzenia na Katowice w przeszłości. Autor wykorzystuje tu wyniki badań własnych. Ostatnia część artykułu to próba pokazania współczesności miasta osobistego, przemian Katowic i problemów, z którymi miasto się boryka. || The article is an attempt to apply the concept of a private city to the analysis of Katowice (author’s private city). The author starts with a reminder of the basic thesis of the concept of the private city by Andrzej Majer. Next paragraphs focus on a literature describing Katowice. The following part is devoted to the most meaningful points in the past of the city. The author uses the research results he authored or co-authored. The last part of this article is an attempt to show the present situation of a private city, a transformation of Katowice and problems the city has to cope with

Pomiędzy rodziną, szkołą i uniwersytetem : refleksje socjologa o barierach edukacyjnych na Górnym Śląsku

The article includes a few sociological reflections on functioning of educational barriers in Upper Silesia. The author cites a classic theory of P. Bourdieu and J. C. Passeron about the role of education in the reproduction of the society and tries to adapt it to the situation in Upper Silesia. The author’s analysis is based on reinterpretation of the material collected during the studies of evolution of culture of Silesian local communities. The following factors played a major role in the reproduction of the situation of Silesian community in the social structure: — distance between primary and secondary habitus; — depriving Silesian culture of its “legal” character; — linguistic capital of the Upper-Silesian community; -- cultural and social capital; — functioning of the law of the background (F. Znaniecki, S. Ossowski); — space of language communication marked by dialect, German and Polish languages; — living conditions; — group ethos; — self-evaluation of educational chances; — inheriting the profession; — structure of education. All these factors impeded the possibilities of social rise among the Silesian population and thus influenced the reproduction of the situation of the Silesian population in the social structure. The author observes present changes in educational aspirations of the Upper- -Silesian community and emphasises the role of regional education in reducing the educational barriers in Upper Silesia. He shows that regional education must take transformational challenges into account, on which depends the future of Silesia — whether it will become a skansen of Europe or a region that will develop very dynamically. Regional education, which develops in more and more schools, allows to: — identify a “legal” character of Silesian culture and raise the rank of the system of values created at home; — limit the symbolical violence; — limit the distance between primary and secondary habitus; — accumulate cultural and social capital

Miasta nasze a w nich...Refelksje o wpływie reklamy zewnętrznej na miejską ikonosferę

W najnowszych studiach nad przestrzenią polskich miast coraz częściej podnosi się problem narastającego chaosu w miejskiej ikonosferze. Reklama zewnętrzna stała się nie tylko „niezbędnym dla codziennego funkcjonowania miasta środkiem porozumienia” (Wallis), ale coraz częściej utrudnia funkcjonowanie mieszkańców, wywołując chaos informacyjny, a także prowadząc do wizualnego skażenia przestrzeni publicznej. Autor podjął badania nad wpływem reklamy zewnętrznej na stan wizualnego skażenia przestrzeni trzech śląskich miast: Rybnika, Katowic i Bielska-Białej, oraz przeprowadził wywiady nt. stosunku mieszkańców Rybnika do reklamy zewnętrznej w ich mieście. Wyniki badań wskazują, że reklama zewnętrzna w istotny sposób przyczynia się do wizualnego skażenia miasta. Zaprezentowane zostały też formy wizualnego skażenia w centrum miasta i poza nim oraz opinie mieszkańców Rybnika o funkcjonowaniu reklamy zewnętrznej w mieście

Słowo Dyrektora Instytutu Socjologii

Nadanie tytułu doktora honoris causa wybitnemu socjologowi Księdzu Profesorowi Januszowi Mariańskiemu jest ważnym wydarzeniem dla całej społeczności Uniwersytetu Śląskiego w Katowicach. Szczególnie jednak ważne jest dla socjologów związanych z tą Uczelnią. Po raz czwarty od 1976 roku, kiedy powołano Instytut Socjologii na Uniwersytecie Śląskim, to zaszczytne wyróżnienie otrzymuje socjolog. Poprzednikami Księdza Profesora Mariańskiego byli tak wybitni uczeni, jak klasyk polskiej socjologii Profesor Jan Szczepański, socjolog i pedagog Profesor Zbigniew Kwieciński oraz medioznawca i socjolog Profesor Jerzy Mikułowski Pomorski. Les mecanismes de formation de l'intelligentsia creative en Silesie avant 1922

Cet article est l’efet des travaux menés dans le cadre du Programme central des Recherches de base (CPBP 09.08 — „Pologne locale”) sur „L’Evolution de la culture en Silésie”. Dans ces recherches l’auteur se concentre sur le problème de la formation et du fonctionnement dé la culture professionnelle en Silésie. Ce texte ne présente pourtant qu’une partie des résultats des recherches qui touchent les mécanismes contribuant à la formation de l’intelligentsia créative en Silésie et met en évidence le rôle du système d’enseignement prussien comme élément limitant la formation de ce groupe.(fragment tekstu
