Arsenic toxicity in Hawaii: a case report and review.

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, many questions were raised in our one particular case including the problem of verifying true arsenic toxicity and in determining the source of the exposure. In our case, there was a markedly elevated concentration of arsenic in samples of pubic hair and in the sample of urine. While arsenic toxicity can present with GI symptoms, we felt that in this particular case the association of the abdominal pain with arsenic toxicity was unlikely. For one, the patient's symptoms persisted despite apparent adequate treatment for arsenic toxicity. Also, the usual symptom of chronic arsenic toxicity is peripheral neuropathy (which was not documented in our case) and not abdominal pain. After the exhaustive diagnostic workup, we felt that this patient had irritable bowel syndrome and that the discovery of arsenic toxicity was serendipitous. In regards to the etiology of the toxicity, the patient's occupation involved working in the construction industry for a number of years. He indicated a definite exposure to termite-treated wood throughout that period. Wood for building houses, etc. is commonly pressure-treated with an arsenic-based compound; therefore, this source of occupational exposure appears to be a likely one. Another remotely possible source was the ingestion of contaminated illicit drugs. Cases of the use of illicit drugs laced with various toxic agents such as cyanide and strychnine have been reported. Although our patient required analgesics not commensurate with his symptoms, he categorically denied any use of "street" drugs. The random urine drug screen for such was negative.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS

Evolution of the dipole polarizability in the stable tin isotope chain

The dipole polarizability of stable even-mass tin isotopes 112,114,116,118,120,124 was extracted from inelastic proton scattering experiments at 295 MeV under very forward angles performed at RCNP. Predictions from energy density functionals cannot account for the present data and the polarizability of 208Pb simultaneously. The evolution of the polarizabilities in neighboring isotopes indicates a kink at 120Sn while all model results show a nearly linear increase with mass number after inclusion of pairing corrections.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Optical pulse compression based on enhanced frequency chirping

Through numerical simulations, we show that, under relatively general conditions, passage of an intense picosecond pulse through a single-mode optical fiber can cause the pulse to become strongly frequency broadened with a positive chirp (linear frequency sweep) describing essentially all of the energy of the output pulse. Also, because the optical fiber supports only a single transverse mode, the entire output beam profile has the same frequency modulation. These two features allow for unprecedented optical pulse compression.Peer reviewedElectrical and Computer Engineerin

Induction of tumor-specific acquired immunity against already established tumors by selective stimulation of innate DEC-205+ dendritic cells

Two major distinct subsets of dendritic cells (DCs) are arranged to regulate our immune responses in vivo; 33D1+ and DEC-205+ DCs. Using anti-33D1-specific monoclonal antibody, 33D1+ DCs were successfully depleted from C57BL/6 mice. When 33D1+ DC-depleted mice were stimulated with LPS, serum IL-12, but not IL-10 secretion that may be mediated by the remaining DEC-205+ DCs was markedly enhanced, which may induce Th1 dominancy upon TLR signaling. The 33D1+ DC-depleted mice, implanted with syngeneic Hepa1-6 hepatoma or B16-F10 melanoma cells into the dermis, showed apparent inhibition of already established tumor growth in vivo when they were subcutaneously (sc) injected once or twice with LPS after tumor implantation. Moreover, the development of lung metastasis of B16-F10 melanoma cells injected intravenously was also suppressed when 33D1+ DC-deleted mice were stimulated twice with LPS in a similar manner, in which the actual cell number of NK1.1+CD3− NK cells in lung tissues was markedly increased. Furthermore, intraperitoneal (ip) administration of a very small amount of melphalan (l-phenylalanine mustard; l-PAM) (0.25 mg/kg) in LPS-stimulated 33D1+ DC-deleted mice helped to induce H-2Kb-restricted epitope-specific CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) among tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes against already established syngeneic E.G7-OVA lymphoma. These findings indicate the importance and effectiveness of selective targeting of a specific subset of DCs, such as DEC-205+ DCs alone or with a very small amount of anticancer drugs to activate both CD8+ CTLs and NK effectors without externally added tumor antigen stimulation in vivo and provide a new direction for tumor immunotherapy

Determination of the muon charge sign with the dipolar spectrometers of the OPERA experiment

The OPERA long-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiment has observed the direct appearance of ντ\nu_\tau in the CNGS νμ\nu_\mu beam. Two large muon magnetic spectrometers are used to identify muons produced in the τ\tau leptonic decay and in νμCC\nu_\mu^{CC} interactions by measuring their charge and momentum. Besides the kinematic analysis of the τ\tau decays, background resulting from the decay of charmed particles produced in νμCC\nu_\mu^{CC} interactions is reduced by efficiently identifying the muon track. A new method for the charge sign determination has been applied, via a weighted angular matching of the straight track-segments reconstructed in the different parts of the dipole magnets. Results obtained for Monte Carlo and real data are presented. Comparison with a method where no matching is used shows a significant reduction of up to 40\% of the fraction of wrongly determined charges.Comment: 10 pages. Improvements in the tex

A putative relay circuit providing low-threshold mechanoreceptive input to lamina I projection neurons via vertical cells in lamina II of the rat dorsal horn

Background: Lamina I projection neurons respond to painful stimuli, and some are also activated by touch or hair movement. Neuropathic pain resulting from peripheral nerve damage is often associated with tactile allodynia (touch-evoked pain), and this may result from increased responsiveness of lamina I projection neurons to non-noxious mechanical stimuli. It is thought that polysynaptic pathways involving excitatory interneurons can transmit tactile inputs to lamina I projection neurons, but that these are normally suppressed by inhibitory interneurons. Vertical cells in lamina II provide a potential route through which tactile stimuli can activate lamina I projection neurons, since their dendrites extend into the region where tactile afferents terminate, while their axons can innervate the projection cells. The aim of this study was to determine whether vertical cell dendrites were contacted by the central terminals of low-threshold mechanoreceptive primary afferents. Results: We initially demonstrated contacts between dendritic spines of vertical cells that had been recorded in spinal cord slices and axonal boutons containing the vesicular glutamate transporter 1 (VGLUT1), which is expressed by myelinated low-threshold mechanoreceptive afferents. To confirm that the VGLUT1 boutons included primary afferents, we then examined vertical cells recorded in rats that had received injections of cholera toxin B subunit (CTb) into the sciatic nerve. We found that over half of the VGLUT1 boutons contacting the vertical cells were CTb-immunoreactive, indicating that they were of primary afferent origin. Conclusions: These results show that vertical cell dendritic spines are frequently contacted by the central terminals of myelinated low-threshold mechanoreceptive afferents. Since dendritic spines are associated with excitatory synapses, it is likely that most of these contacts were synaptic. Vertical cells in lamina II are therefore a potential route through which tactile afferents can activate lamina I projection neurons, and this pathway could play a role in tactile allodynia

Procedure for short-lived particle detection in the OPERA experiment and its application to charm decays

The OPERA experiment, designed to perform the first observation of νμντ\nu_\mu \rightarrow \nu_\tau oscillations in appearance mode through the detection of the τ\tau leptons produced in ντ\nu_\tau charged current interactions, has collected data from 2008 to 2012. In the present paper, the procedure developed to detect τ\tau particle decays, occurring over distances of the order of 1 mm from the neutrino interaction point, is described in detail. The results of its application to the search for charmed hadrons are then presented as a validation of the methods for ντ\nu_\tau appearance detection
