    On the effects of modified lane configuration due to construction works on bridge loading

    Construction works are frequently recurring events within highway networks, temporarily altering the characteristics of the traffic flow and hence of the bridge loading process. Consequently, highway bridge superstructures usually carrying unidirectional traffic might have to face modified configurations, with possibly altered lane widths and transverse lane positions, or even an increased number of lanes and the occurrence of bidirectional traffic flow. While usually covering only short periods compared to the average service life of a bridge, such scenarios might represent extreme loading situations, potentially dominating the traffic loading process. Therefore, their consideration and accurate modeling in the course of traffic load assessment and development of object-specific traffic load models are of utmost importance. The presented study analyzes data from bridge monitoring along federal highway A92 in Southern Germany. The data covers standard and different modified lane configurations due to construction works. Besides analyzing the effects on traffic flow characteristics and resulting occurrence rates of multiple truck presence on the bridge, the consequences for load effects and their extreme value behavior are also evaluated. The findings support verification of related code background works and can serve as base and guidance for future research efforts on bridge load modeling in this context

    Reliability of a bridge with an orthotropic deck exposed to extreme traffic events

That is why the comparison between results from various statistical approaches based on the recorded data for applied traffic actions is the main point of interest of this work. The object of the current study is the famous Millau viaduct, a cable-stayed bridge with the steel orthotropic deck located in Southern France. Values of load effects that are used in analysis are derived from a finite element model of a part of the deck. They are based on data from traffic monitoring that is provided from the bridge Weigh-In-Motion system covering several months of axle loads, distances and speeds of heavy trucks. The methodology is based on a definition of limit state functions based on several statistical distributions in order to assess and compare reliability indexes for the ultimate limit state. It includes a comparison between different approaches of extreme values theory, the methodology proposed in background works for European standards and the design load model.     Statistical-mechanics approach to a reinforcement learning model with memory

    We introduce a two-player model of reinforcement learning with memory. Past actions of an iterated game are stored in a memory and used to determine player's next action. To examine the behaviour of the model some approximate methods are used and confronted against numerical simulations and exact master equation. When the length of memory of players increases to infinity the model undergoes an absorbing-state phase transition. Performance of examined strategies is checked in the prisoner' dilemma game. It turns out that it is advantageous to have a large memory in symmetric games, but it is better to have a short memory in asymmetric ones.Comment: 6 pages, some additional numerical calculation

    Clinical decision-making on spinal cord injury-associated pneumonia: a nationwide survey in Germany

    Study design: Survey study. Objectives: Spinal cord injury (SCI)-associated pneumonia (SCI-AP) is associated with poor functional recovery and a major cause of death after SCI. Better tackling SCI-AP requires a common understanding on how SCI-AP is defined. This survey examines clinical algorithms relevant for diagnosis and treatment of SCI-AP. Setting: All departments for SCI-care in Germany. Methods: The clinical decision-making on SCI-AP and the utility of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria for diagnosis of ‘clinically defined pneumonia’ were assessed by means of a standardized questionnaire including eight case vignettes of suspected SCI-AP. The diagnostic decisions based on the case information were analysed using classification and regression trees (CART). Results: The majority of responding departments were aware of the CDC-criteria (88%). In the clinical vignettes, 38–81% of the departments diagnosed SCI-AP in accordance with the CDC-criteria and 7–41% diagnosed SCI-AP in deviation from the CDC-criteria. The diagnostic agreement was not associated with the availability of standard operating procedures for SCI-AP management in the departments. CART analysis identified radiological findings, fever, and worsened gas exchange as most important for the decision on SCI-AP. Frequently requested supplementary diagnostics were microbiological analyses, C-reactive protein, and procalcitonin. For empirical antibiotic therapy, the departments used (acyl-)aminopenicillins/β-lactamase inhibitors, cephalosporins, or combinations of (acyl-)aminopenicillins/β-lactamase inhibitors with fluoroquinolones or carbapenems. Conclusions: This survey reveals a diagnostic ambiguity regarding SCI-AP despite the awareness of CDC-criteria and established SOPs. Heterogeneous clinical practice is encouraging the development of disease-specific guidelines for diagnosis and management of SCI-AP

    Decreased 3D observer variation with matched CT-MRI, for target delineation in Nasopharynx cancer

    Contains fulltext : 88137.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)PURPOSE: To determine the variation in target delineation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and the impact of measures to minimize this variation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For ten nasopharyngeal cancer patients, ten observers each delineated the Clinical Target Volume (CTV) and the CTV elective. After 3D analysis of the delineated volumes, a second delineation was performed. This implied improved delineation instructions, a combined delineation on CT and co-registered MRI, forced use of sagittal reconstructions, and an on-line anatomical atlas. RESULTS: Both for the CTV and the CTV elective delineations, the 3D SD decreased from Phase 1 to Phase 2, from 4.4 to 3.3 mm for the CTV and from 5.9 to 4.9 mm for the elective. There was an increase agreement, where the observers intended to delineate the same structure, from 36 to 64 surface % (p = 0.003) for the CTV and from 17 to 59% (p = 0.004) for the elective. The largest variations were at the caudal border of the delineations but these were smaller when an observer utilized the sagittal window. Hence, the use of sagittal side windows was enforced in the second phase and resulted in a decreased standard deviation for this area from 7.7 to 3.3 mm (p = 0.001) for the CTV and 7.9 to 5.6 mm (p = 0.03) for the CTV elective. DISCUSSION: Attempts to decrease the variation need to be tailored to the specific causes of the variation.     Performance and automation of ancient DNA capture with RNA hyRAD probes

    DNA hybridization-capture techniques allow researchers to focus their sequencing efforts on preselected genomic regions. This feature is especially useful when analys- ing ancient DNA (aDNA) extracts, which are often dominated by exogenous environ- mental sources. Here, we assessed, for the first time, the performance of hyRAD as an inexpensive and design-free alternative to commercial capture protocols to obtain authentic aDNA data from osseous remains. HyRAD relies on double enzymatic re- striction of fresh DNA extracts to produce RNA probes that cover only a fraction ofthe genome and can serve as baits for capturing homologous fragments from aDNA li- braries. We found that this approach could retrieve sequence data from horse remains coming from a range of preservation environments, including beyond radiocarbon range, yielding up to 146.5-fold on-target enrichment for aDNA extracts showing ex- tremely low endogenous content (20%¿30%), while the fraction of endogenous reads mapping on- and off-target was relatively insensi- tive to the original endogenous DNA content. Procedures based on two instead of a single round of capture increased on-target coverage up to 3.6-fold. Additionally, we used methylation-sensitive restriction enzymes to produce probes targeting hypo- methylated regions, which improved data quality by reducing post-mortem DNA dam- age and mapping within multicopy regions. Finally, we developed a fully automated hyRAD protocol utilizing inexpensive robotic platforms to facilitate capture process- ing.     Forward pi^0 Production and Associated Transverse Energy Flow in Deep-Inelastic Scattering at HERA

    Deep-inelastic positron-proton interactions at low values of Bjorken-x down to x \approx 4.10^-5 which give rise to high transverse momentum pi^0 mesons are studied with the H1 experiment at HERA. The inclusive cross section for pi^0 mesons produced at small angles with respect to the proton remnant (the forward region) is presented as a function of the transverse momentum and energy of the pi^0 and of the four-momentum transfer Q^2 and Bjorken-x. Measurements are also presented of the transverse energy flow in events containing a forward pi^0 meson. Hadronic final state calculations based on QCD models implementing different parton evolution schemes are confronted with the data.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures and 3 table

    Governing the Global Commons with Local Institutions

    Most problems faced by modern human society have two characteristics in common - they are tragedy-of-the-commons type of problems, and they are global problems. Tragedy-of-the-commons type of problems are those where a commonly shared resource is overexploited by free riders at the expense of everyone sharing the resource. The exploitation of global resources such as clean air and water, political stability and peace, etc. underlies many of the most pressing human problems. Punishment of free riding behavior is one of the most frequently used strategies to combat the problem, but the spatial reach of sanctioning institutions is often more limited than the spatial effects of overexploitation. Here, we analyze a general game theoretical model to assess under what circumstances sanctioning institutions with limited reach can maintain the larger commons. We find that the effect of the spatial reach has a strong effect on whether and how the commons can be maintained, and that the transitions between those outcomes are characterized by phase transitions. The latter indicates that a small change in the reach of sanctioning systems can profoundly change the way the global commons can be managed

    Henipavirus RNA in African Bats

    BACKGROUND: Henipaviruses (Hendra and Nipah virus) are highly pathogenic members of the family Paramyxoviridae. Fruit-eating bats of the Pteropus genus have been suggested as their natural reservoir. Human Henipavirus infections have been reported in a region extending from Australia via Malaysia into Bangladesh, compatible with the geographic range of Pteropus. These bats do not occur in continental Africa, but a whole range of other fruit bats is encountered. One of the most abundant is Eidolon helvum, the African Straw-coloured fruit bat. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Feces from E. helvum roosting in an urban setting in Kumasi/Ghana were tested for Henipavirus RNA. Sequences of three novel viruses in phylogenetic relationship to known Henipaviruses were detected. Virus RNA concentrations in feces were low. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The finding of novel putative Henipaviruses outside Australia and Asia contributes a significant extension of the region of potential endemicity of one of the most pathogenic virus genera known in humans
