Bororo Funerals: Images of the Refacement of the World

In this article I analyze Bororo funerals as moments of defacement and refacement. Death triggers a series of transformations that involve the dead person, the corpse itself, the soul, the making of the deceased’s representative, and the relationships among the living. All these transformations—which are the object of public secrecy—take place during the various rituals that compose the funerary cycle. The text is accompanied by a selection of photographs taken during thirty years of field research among the Bororo Indians of Mato Grosso, Brazil, in order to illustrate Bororo funerals as moments of re-creation of the world, following the theoretical perspectives of both Taussig and Overing. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar os funerais Bororo como momentos de desfiguração e refiguração do mundo. Entre os Bororo a morte dá início a uma série de transformações que envolvem o morto, seu corpo, a alma, a escolha e investidura do representante do morto, assim como transformações nas relações sociais entre os vivos. Todas estas transformações, que são objeto de segredo público, são elaboradas ao longo dos rituais que fazem parte do ciclo funerário. O texto é acompanhado por uma seleção de fotos por mim captadas a longo de 30 anos de pesquisa entre estes índios, de modo a ilustrar os funerais Bororo como momentos de recriação do mundo, a partir das perspectivas teóricas elaboradas por Taussig e Overing

Iconografia e Oralidade: sobre objetos e pessoa entre os Bororo

This article focuses on some sensory modalities – visible, material and sonic – which allow for a greater understanding of the processes through which social beings in indigenous Brazil are created and transformed. David MacDougall has suggested that the study of visible cultural expressions should be considered an aspect of visual anthropology since “the expressive systems of human society… communicate meanings partially or primarily by visual means” (MacDougall 1997, 283). However, I would argue that it is also possible to associate these visible aspects of human communication with other sensorial modalities, such as, for example, sonic effects and even breathing, both of which are essential to any reflection on the transformations taking place in human bodies. In this article, I shall aim to substantiate this argument by recasting the material presented in one of my first publications in the Revista de Antropologia and which concerned the role of certain material objects in the celebration of the Bororo funeral (Caiuby Novaes 1981). Along with birth and naming, among the Bororo death and funerals mark one of the most important social ransformations that occur over the course of a person’s lifetime and certain material objects play a crucial role in bringing these about. In this reworking of my earlier material, I turn my focus on the sensory modalities – visible, material and sonic - through which it is possible to understand the role played by the manufacture and social relations engendered by these objects in the creation and transformation of social beings among the Bororo. I hope that my analysis of the Bororo case will not only illuminate similar ritual processes elsewhere in indigenous lowland South America, but will contribute to the enrichment of anthropological understanding of these transformations more generally. It should be stressed that what is at stake here is not the understanding of these sensory modalities per se, but rather the broad variety of cultural phenomena in which they may be encoded.Translation: Elizabeth RahmanO foco desse artigo centra-se em algumas modalidades sensíveis – visíveis, materiais e sonoras – por meio das quais é possível entender processos de criação e transformação de seres sociais que ocorrem em sociedades indígenas no Brasil. O estudo das formas culturais visíveis é uma das atividades da antropologia visual, tal como o coloca MacDougall; formas que constituem sistemas expressivos das sociedades humanas e que comunicam significados parcial ou fundamentalmente por meios visuais (MacDougall 1997, 283). Por outro lado, creio ser possível associar esses aspectos visíveis a outros aspectos sensíveis, como por exemplo os efeitos sonoros e mesmo o sopro, essenciais para a reflexão sobre a transformação que se opera em corpos humanos. Parto de um caso muito específico – alguns dos objetos presentes no funeral Bororo e as relações sociais que engendram a manufatura destes objetos, para mostrar que o caso Bororo pode enriquecer a perspectiva antropológica sobre esses processos. Nascimento, nominação, morte e funeral marcam transformações sociais da pessoa ao longo da vida, e a compreensão desses processos pode se beneficiar desta abordagem, que tem como foco essas modalidades sensíveis de expressão nos rituais. Vale lembrar que não se trata de entender estas modalidades sensíveis per se e sim o amplo espectro de relações culturalmente infletidas e codificadas por estas formas sensíveis de expressão

Por uma sensibilização do olhar – sobre a importância da fotografia na formação do antropólogo

In this text, I try to associate anthropological field research to the photographic act itself, showing what is common in these two activities: the need for clipping, proximity, intimacy and empathy, the decision about what will or will not be in focus. From my experiences at the Escola de Arte Brasil: I talk about the awareness of the gaze, the need to create repertoires and the opportunity that photography offers to change the focus - from the verb to behavior, the body, the gestures, the details about which it is not always possible to speak. I also try to emphasize the association of photography with the narrative that Walter Benjamin talks about, the ability of both the narrative and the photography to welcome the experience of those who hear or contemplate it.Nesse texto, procuro associar a pesquisa de campo antropológica ao próprio ato fotográfico, mostrando o que há de comum nessas duas atividades: a necessidade de recorte, de proximidade, de intimidade e empatia, a decisão sobre o que estará ou não em foco. A partir de minhas experiências na Escola de Arte Brasil, falo sobre a sensibilização do olhar, a necessidade de criar repertórios e a oportunidade que a fotografia oferece de mudar o foco – do verbo para o comportamento, o corpo, os gestos, os detalhes sobre os quais nem sempre é possível falar. Procuro ainda ressaltar a associação da fotografia com a narrativa de que fala Walter Benjamin, a capacidade tanto da narrativa, quanto da fotografia, de acolher a experiência de quem a ouve ou contempla

FOTOGRAFIA E ETNOGRAFIA

The aim here is to understand the relationship between ethnography and photography, which has its origins at the same time, the mid-19th century. What are the similarities between them? What contributions can photography bring to ethnography? What is the role of otherness, both for anthropology and for photography? What kind of knowledge can photography provide? What drives a person to dedicate herself/himself with passion to the art of photography? I try to develop these questions from the results of the research that I have recently concluded on the photographs of Claudia Andujar, Lux Vidal and Maureen Bisilliat.Trata-se aqui de entender as relações entre etnografia e fotografia, que tem sua origem mais ou menos na mesma época, meados do século XIX. Quais as semelhanças entre elas? Que contribuições a fotografia pode trazer à etnografia? Qual o papel da alteridade, tanto para a antropologia, quanto para a fotografia? Que tipo de conhecimento a fotografia pode propiciar? O que leva uma pessoa a se dedicar com paixão à arte de fotografar? Procuro desenvolver essas questões a partir dos resultados de pesquisa que conclui recentemente sobre as fotografias de Claudia Andujar, Lux Vidal e Maureen Bisilliat

A Construção de Imagens na Pesquisa de Campo em Antropologia

O objetivo deste artigo é refletir sobre a produção de imagens fotográficas ao longo da pesquisa de campo antropológica, a partir de minha própria experiência de pesquisa entre os Bororo de Mato Grosso, de outros grupos que pesquisei, de pesquisas que foram por mim orientadas e de outras das quais me aproximei.
