    Neutron-proton interaction in rare-earth nuclei: Role of tensor force

    We investigate the role of the tensor force in the description of doubly odd deformed nuclei within the framework of the particle-rotor model. We study the rare-earth nuclei 174Lu, 180Ta, 182Ta, and 188Re using a finite-range interaction, with and without tensor terms. Attention is focused on the lowest K=0 and K=1 bands, where the effects of the residual neutron-proton interaction are particularly evident. Comparison of the calculated results with experimental data evidences the importance of the tensor-force effects.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, to be published on Physical Review

    To call a place rural is to categorize it as a particular kind of place and, often, to presume that particular kinds of being innately occur there. Over the past 20 years, however, trends in British rural studies have problematized easy ascription; this article is an ethnographic contribution within those trends. If it is no longer adequate to read the rural as a container for being, then, as I contend here, rurality can be explored anew through doing. I draw upon David Matless’s (1994) frame of ‘doing the village’ representationally, and amplify it to include concepts of place as representational and relational. I thus use ‘doing’ to read the multiple ways in which diverse residents in a Northern England village engage with both their real locality and with nationally shared rural imaginings

    “Nonsense rides piggyback on sensible things”, declares professional sceptic and questioned-document analyst Joe Nickell concerning graphology. This chapter examines graphology’s enduring allure and reach, despite its controversies, and considers its relationship with other types of handwriting analysis. It first asks: is it possible to metaphorically “dissect” the page of handwritten texts, to scrutinize writing as a “medical paratext” rich in information about the writer’s state of health? It then interrogates the nature of the connection between physical and mental states and handwriting. It demonstrates how academics are going “back to basics” with their enquiries into individual difference and handwriting features, and how digital methodologies are contributing to this. Thus, this chapter is an updated study of graphology, providing a wider understanding of the concept of the paratext by considering the information captured in handwriting in the context of a digital age

    ϕ\phi meson production in dd++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

    The PHENIX experiment has measured ϕ\phi meson production in dd++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV using the dimuon and dielectron decay channels. The ϕ\phi meson is measured in the forward (backward) dd-going (Au-going) direction, 1.2<y<2.21.2<y<2.2 (2.2<y<1.2-2.2<y<-1.2) in the transverse-momentum (pTp_T) range from 1--7 GeV/cc, and at midrapidity y<0.35|y|<0.35 in the pTp_T range below 7 GeV/cc. The ϕ\phi meson invariant yields and nuclear-modification factors as a function of pTp_T, rapidity, and centrality are reported. An enhancement of ϕ\phi meson production is observed in the Au-going direction, while suppression is seen in the dd-going direction, and no modification is observed at midrapidity relative to the yield in pp++pp collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions.     Cross Section and Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetry of η\eta Mesons in p+pp^{\uparrow}+p Collisions at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV at Forward Rapidity

    We present a measurement of the cross section and transverse single-spin asymmetry (ANA_N) for η\eta mesons at large pseudorapidity from s=200\sqrt{s}=200~GeV p+pp^{\uparrow}+p collisions. The measured cross section for 0.5<pT<5.00.5<p_T<5.0~GeV/cc and 3.0<η<3.83.0<|\eta|<3.8 is well described by a next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculation. The asymmetries ANA_N have been measured as a function of Feynman-xx (xFx_F) from 0.2<xF<0.70.2<|x_{F}|<0.7, as well as transverse momentum (pTp_T) from 1.0<pT<4.51.0<p_T<4.5~GeV/cc. The asymmetry averaged over positive xFx_F is AN=0.061±0.014\langle{A_{N}}\rangle=0.061{\pm}0.014. The results are consistent with prior transverse single-spin measurements of forward η\eta and π0\pi^{0} mesons at various energies in overlapping xFx_F ranges.     Transverse momentum and centrality dependence of dihadron correlations in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV: Jet-quenching and the response of partonic matter

    Azimuthal angle \Delta\phi correlations are presented for charged hadrons from dijets for 0.4 < p_T < 10 GeV/c in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. With increasing p_T, the away-side distribution evolves from a broad to a concave shape, then to a convex shape. Comparisons to p+p data suggest that the away-side can be divided into a partially suppressed "head" region centered at Delta\phi ~ \pi, and an enhanced "shoulder" region centered at Delta\phi ~ \pi +/- 1.1. The p_T spectrum for the "head" region softens toward central collisions, consistent with the onset of jet quenching. The spectral slope for the "shoulder" region is independent of centrality and trigger p_T, which offers constraints on energy transport mechanisms and suggests that the "shoulder" region contains the medium response to energetic jets.Comment: 420 authors from 58 institutions, 6 pages, 4 figures.     Measurement of higher cumulants of net-charge multiplicity distributions in Au++Au collisions at sNN=7.7200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7-200 GeV

    We report the measurement of cumulants (Cn,n=14C_n, n=1\ldots4) of the net-charge distributions measured within pseudorapidity (η<0.35|\eta|<0.35) in Au++Au collisions at sNN=7.7200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7-200 GeV with the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The ratios of cumulants (e.g. C1/C2C_1/C_2, C3/C1C_3/C_1) of the net-charge distributions, which can be related to volume independent susceptibility ratios, are studied as a function of centrality and energy. These quantities are important to understand the quantum-chromodynamics phase diagram and possible existence of a critical end point. The measured values are very well described by expectation from negative binomial distributions. We do not observe any nonmonotonic behavior in the ratios of the cumulants as a function of collision energy. The measured values of C1/C2=μ/σ2C_1/C_2 = \mu/\sigma^2 and C3/C1=Sσ3/μC_3/C_1 = S\sigma^3/\mu can be directly compared to lattice quantum-chromodynamics calculations and thus allow extraction of both the chemical freeze-out temperature and the baryon chemical potential at each center-of-mass energy.Comment: 512 authors, 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. v2 is version accepted for publication in Phys.
