    Molecular characteristics of humic substances from different origins and their effects on growth and metabolism of Pinus laricio callus

    Abstract Humic susbtances (HS) are increasingly applied as biostimulants in agriculture, though their mechanism of action is not yet completely understood due to their complex and heterogeneous composition. Here, we isolated thirteen different humic and fulvic acids from different sources, such as soils, composts, peat, leonardite and lignite, and characterized the distribution of their carbon components by 13C-CPMAS–NMR spectroscopy. Callus of Pinus Laricio, as a model plant species, was treated with different humic extracts and its growth and content of carbohydrates, phenols, and enzyme related to the nitrogen metabolism (invertase, glutamine synthetase, glutamate synthase, phosphoenoly pyruvate carboxylase, malate dehydrogenase) and stress resistance (catalase) were monitored. While a multivariate statistical analysis of NMR results well-separated the HS characteristics based on their origin, humic materials generally increased callus growth, as expected, with largest effects being exerted by the mostly polar humic acids from composts. However, the rest of measured parameters were not linearly related to hydrophobicity and aromaticity of humic isolates as well as their origin, but their conformational dynamics had to be advocated to explain their effects on callus cellular components. This work confirms that HS of various origin can act as sustainable biostimulants of plant growth, though the comprehension of their effects on plants biochemical activities requires further research and additional understanding of their molecular composition and conformational behaviour.     On the Hardware Feasibility of Nonlinear Trajectory Optimization for Legged Locomotion based on a Simplified Dynamics

    Simplified models are useful to increase the computational efficiency of a motion planning algorithm, but their lack of accuracy have to be managed. We propose two feasibility constraints to be included in a Single Rigid Body Dynamics-based trajectory optimizer in order to obtain robust motions in challenging terrain. The first one finds an approximate relationship between joint-torque limits and admissible contact forces, without requiring the joint positions. The second one proposes a leg model to prevent leg collision with the environment. Such constraints have been included in a simplified nonlinear non-convex trajectory optimization problem. We demonstrate the feasibility of the resulting motion plans both in simulation and on the Hydraulically actuated Quadruped (HyQ) robot, considering experiments on an irregular terrain

    Agro-Morphological, Yield and Quality Traits and Interrelationship with Yield Stability in Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) Genotypes under Saline Marginal Environment

    Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a halophytic crop that shows resistance to multiple abiotic stresses, including salinity. In this study we investigated the salinity tolerance mechanisms of six contrasting quinoa cultivars belonging to the coastal region of Chile using agro-physiological parameters (plant height (PH), number of branches/plant (BN), number of panicles/plant (PN), panicle length (PL), biochemical traits (leaf C%, leaf N%, grain protein contents); harvest index and yield (seed yield and plant dry biomass (PDM) under three salinity levels (0, 10, and 20 d Sm-1 NaCl). The yield stability was evaluated through comparision of seed yield characteristics [(static environmental variance (S-2) and dynamic Wricke's ecovalence (W-2)]. Results showed that significant variations existed in agro-morphological and yield attributes. With increasing salinity levels, yield contributing parameters (number of panicles and panicle length) decreased. Salt stress reduced the leaf carbon and nitrogen contents. Genotypes Q21, and AMES13761 showed higher seed yield (2.30 t ha(-1)), more productivity and stability at various salinities as compared to the other genotypes. Salinity reduced seed yield to 44.48% and 60% at lower (10 dS m(-1)) and higher salinity (20 dS m(-1)), respectively. Grain protein content was highest in NSL106398 and lowest in Q29 when treated with saline water. Seed yield was positively correlated with PH, TB, HI, and C%. Significant and negative correlations were observed between N%, protein contents and seed yield. PH showed significant positive correlation with APL, HI, C% and C:N ratio. HI displayed positive correlations with C%, N% and protein content., All measured plant traits, except for C:N ratio, responded to salt in a genotype-specific way. Our results indicate that the genotypes (Q21 and AMES13761) proved their suitability under sandy desert soils of Dubai, UAE as they exhibited higher seed yield while NSL106398 showed an higher seed protein content. The present research highlights the need to preserve quinoa biodiversity for a better seedling establishment, survival and stable yield in the sandy desertic UAE environment

    Abstract: Organic-matter evolution of soils from Sila uplands (Calabria, Italy). Soil organic matter (SOM) has long been known for its central role in chemical, biochemical and physiological soil processes. Efforts in optimizing crop production, minimizing environmental pollution, and enhancing soil quality all require a better understanding of the nature and evolution of soil organic matter for its proper management. Four sites (S1 ' S4), developed on an area of about 9000 ha, in the Sila Mountains, were evaluated to study the turnover of the soil organic matter. The SOM of four sites studied undergoes to a fast mineralization process in the sites S1, S3 and S4, a pastureland, a grass-pastureland, and a cropland, respectively. An opposite trend is observed in the S2 site, under mixed forest of coniferous and broadleaf, where prevailed the humification process

    O vermicomposto contém uma concentração elevada de substâncias húmicas e já é bem conhecido o efeito do seu uso sobre as propriedades do solo. No entanto,a ação direta das substâncias húmicas sobre o metabolismo das plantas é menos conhecida. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o uso de humatos extraídos de vermicomposto de esterco de curral com KOH 0,1 mol L-1 sobre o desenvolvimento e metabolismo de ATP em plântulas de alface. Após a germinação, plântulas de alface foram tratadas com os humatos em concentrações que variaram de 0 a 100 mg L-1 de C, durante quinze dias. Foram avaliados o crescimento da raiz e a atividade das bombas de H+ isoladas da fração microssomal do sistema radicular. Foi observado aumento na matéria fresca e seca do sistema radicular, bem como no número de sítios de mitose, raízes emergidas do eixo principal, na área e no comprimento radiculares, com o uso do humato na concentração de 25 mg L-1 de C. Também foi observado, nessa concentração, aumento significativo na hidrólise de ATP pelas bombas de H+, responsáveis pela geração de energia necessária à absorção de íons e pelo crescimento celular

    Survival of massive allografts in segmental oncological bone defect reconstructions

    Reconstructions of large segmental bone defects after resection of bone tumours with massive structural allografts have a high number of reported complications including fracture, infection and non-union. Our goal is to report the survival and complications of massive allografts in our patients. A total of 32 patients were evaluated for fracture, infection, non-union rate and survival of their massive allograft reconstructions. The average follow-up for this group was five years and three months. The total fracture rate was 13% with a total infection rate of 16%. We found a low union rate of 25%. The total survival of the allografts was 80.8% (± 18.7%) after five years. We found a five-year allograft survival of 80.8% which is comparable with other studies

    Maternal views on facilitators of and barriers to breastfeeding preterm infants

    Background: The supply of breast milk to preterm infants tends to occur at a lower rate than that recorded among term infants. We aimed to investigate the facilitators of and barriers to breastfeeding during hospital stay according to the experiences of mothers that gave birth to premature infants requiring admission to neonatal intensive care unit. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted. Mothers who had delivered a newborn with a gestational age 6433 weeks requiring intensive care, entered the study. Basic subjects' characteristics and infant feeding practices were also recorded. Results: A total of 64 mothers were enrolled, leading to a total of 81 infants. At discharge, any breastfeeding was recorded in 66% of infants, with 27% of those infants being exclusively breastfed. Any infant was exclusively fed directly at the breast. Most mothers experienced adequate support during their infant's hospitalization and reported satisfaction with breastfeeding. Almost all mothers felt that feeding their infant human milk was beneficial for the infant's health. Thirty percent of the mothers reported that they had experienced some obstacles to breastfeeding. Specifically, infants born to mothers who experienced difficulties in pumping breast milk (OR = 4.6; CI 1.5-13.9) or in providing an adequate amount of milk to the infant (OR = 3.57; CI 1.1-11.5) were at higher risk of being fed with formula at discharge. Conclusions: On the basis of the present results, health care professionals should target their efforts to optimize breastfeeding support for mothers of premature infants admitted to level III care, especially by improving breast milk production and endorsing direct breastfeeding
