Exciton condensate at a total filling factor of 1 in Corbino 2D electron bilayers
Magneto-transport and drag measurements on a quasi-Corbino 2D electron
bilayer at the systems total filling factor 1 (v_tot=1) reveal a drag voltage
that is equal in magnitude to the drive voltage as soon as the two layers begin
to form the expected v_tot=1 exciton condensate. The identity of both voltages
remains present even at elevated temperatures of 0.25 K. The conductance in the
current carrying layer vanishes only in the limit of strong coupling between
the two layers and at T->0 K which suggests the presence of an excitonic
circular current
Nuclear Spins in a Nanoscale Device for Quantum Information Processing
Coherent oscillations between any two levels from four nuclear spin states of
I=3/2 have been demonstrated in a nanometre-scale NMR semiconductor device,
where nuclear spins are all-electrically controlled. Using this device, we
discuss quantum logic operations on two fictitious qubits of the I=3/2 system,
and propose a quantum state tomography scheme based on the measurement of

Immunohistochemical localization of notch signaling molecules in ameloblastomas
We examined Notch signaling molecules, Notch1 and Jagged1, in serial large cases of typical solid/multicystic ameloblastoma. In general, Notch positive staining products were frequently detected in the cytoplasms of the cells. In the same cells, Jagged positive staining were also frequently observed, while only occasionally positive in peripheral cells, especially in cuboidal cells. The results showed that these morphogenesis regulation factors are closely related to cytological differentiation in neoplastic cells of ameloblastoma. The Notch and Jagged positive-cell ratios were frequently positive, and the ratios were nearly the same between the varied histopathological, cytological patterns. However, the less-differentiated cells were fewer in number than that of well-differentiated cells

Fruit consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes: results from three prospective longitudinal cohort studies
Objective: To determine whether individual fruits are differentially associated with risk of type 2 diabetes. Design: Prospective longitudinal cohort study. Setting: Health professionals in the United States. Participants: 66 105 women from the Nurses’ Health Study (1984-2008), 85 104 women from the Nurses’ Health Study II (1991-2009), and 36 173 men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (1986-2008) who were free of major chronic diseases at baseline in these studies. Main outcome measure Incident cases of type 2 diabetes, identified through self report and confirmed by supplementary questionnaires. Results: During 3 464 641 person years of follow-up, 12 198 participants developed type 2 diabetes. After adjustment for personal, lifestyle, and dietary risk factors of diabetes, the pooled hazard ratio of type 2 diabetes for every three servings/week of total whole fruit consumption was 0.98 (95% confidence interval 0.96 to 0.99). With mutual adjustment of individual fruits, the pooled hazard ratios of type 2 diabetes for every three servings/week were 0.74 (0.66 to 0.83) for blueberries, 0.88 (0.83 to 0.93) for grapes and raisins, 0.89 (0.79 to 1.01) for prunes, 0.93 (0.90 to 0.96) for apples and pears, 0.95 (0.91 to 0.98) for bananas, 0.95 (0.91 to 0.99) for grapefruit, 0.97 (0.92 to 1.02) for peaches, plums, and apricots, 0.99 (0.95 to 1.03) for oranges, 1.03 (0.96 to 1.10) for strawberries, and 1.10 (1.02 to 1.18) for cantaloupe. The pooled hazard ratio for the same increment in fruit juice consumption was 1.08 (1.05 to 1.11). The associations with risk of type 2 diabetes differed significantly among individual fruits (P<0.001 in all cohorts). Conclusion: Our findings suggest the presence of heterogeneity in the associations between individual fruit consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes. Greater consumption of specific whole fruits, particularly blueberries, grapes, and apples, is significantly associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, whereas greater consumption of fruit juice is associated with a higher risk
Measurement of forward photon production cross-section in proton-proton collisions at = 13 TeV with the LHCf detector
In this paper, we report the production cross-section of forward photons in
the pseudorapidity regions of and ,
measured by the LHCf experiment with proton--proton collisions at =
13 TeV. The results from the analysis of 0.191 of data
obtained in June 2015 are compared to the predictions of several hadronic
interaction models that are used in air-shower simulations for
ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. Although none of the models agree perfectly with
the data, EPOS-LHC shows the best agreement with the experimental data among

Electrically-Controlled Nuclear Spin Polarization and Relaxation by Quantum-Hall states
We investigate interactions between electrons and nuclear spins by using the
resistance (Rxx) peak which develops near filling factor n = 2/3 as a probe. By
temporarily tuning n to a different value, ntemp, with a gate, the Rxx peak is
shown to relax quickly on both sides of ntemp = 1. This is due to enhanced
nuclear spin relaxation by Skyrmions, and demonstrates the dominant role of
nuclear spin in the transport anomaly near n = 2/3. We also observe an
additional enhancement in the nuclear spin relaxation around n = 1/2 and 3/2,
which suggests a Fermi sea of partially-polarized composite fermions.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Pyrazine-Fused Triterpenoids Block the TRPA1 Ion Channel in Vitro and Inhibit TRPA1-Mediated Acute Inflammation in Vivo
TRPA1 is a nonselective cation channel, most famously expressed in nonmyelinated nociceptors. In addition to being an important chemical and mechanical pain sensor, TRPA1 has more recently appeared to have a role also in inflammation. Triterpenoids are natural products with anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects in experimental models. In this paper, 13 novel triterpenoids were created by synthetically modifying betulin, an abundant triterpenoid of the genus Betula L., and their TRPA1-modulating properties were examined. The Fluo 3-AM protocol was used in the initial screening, in which six of the 14 tested triterpenoids inhibited TRPA1 in a statistically significant manner. In subsequent whole-cell patch clamp recordings, the two most effective compounds (pyrazine-fused triterpenoids 8 and 9) displayed a reversible and dose- and voltage-dependent effect to block the TRPA1 ion channel at submicromolar concentrations. Interestingly, the TRPA1 blocking action was also evident in vivo, as compounds 8 and 9 both alleviated TRPA1 agonist-induced acute paw inflammation in mice. The results introduce betulin-derived pyrazine-fused triterpenoids as promising novel antagonists of TRPA1 that are potentially useful in treating diseases with a TRPA1-mediated adverse component
The contribution of Oxygen-Neon white dwarfs to the MACHO content of the Galactic Halo
The interpretation of microlensing results towards the Large
Magellanic Cloud (LMC) still remains controversial. White dwarfs have been
proposed to explain these results and, hence, to contribute significantly to
the mass budget of our Galaxy. However, several constraints on the role played
by regular carbon-oxygen white dwarfs exist. Massivewhite dwarfs are thought to
be made of a mixture of oxygen and neon. Correspondingly, their cooling rate is
larger than those of typical carbon-oxygen white dwarfs and they fade to
invisibility in short timescales. Consequently, they constitute a good
candidate for explaining the microlensing results. Here, we examine in detail
this hypothesis by using the most recent and up-to-date cooling tracks for
massive white dwarfs and a Monte Carlo simulator which takes into account the
most relevant Galactic inputs. We find that oxygen-neon white dwarfs cannot
account for a substantial fraction of the microlensing depth towards the LMC,
independently of the adopted initial mass function, although some microlensing
events could be due to oxygen--neon white dwarfs. The white dwarf population

Mixed mode data clustering: an approach based on tectrachoric correlations
In this paper we face the problem of clustering mixedmode data by assuming that the observed binary variables aregenerated from latent continuous variables. We perform a principalcomponents analysis on the matrix of tetrachoric correlations and wethen estimate the scores of each latent variable and construct adata matrix with continuous variables to be used in fully Guassianmixture models or in the k-means cluster analysis. The calculationof the expected a posteriori (EAP) estimates may proceed by simplyconsidering a limited number of quadrature points. Results on asimulation study and on a real data set are reported
