Evaluation of Fault Mitigation Techniques Based on Approximate Computing Under Radiation

A software technique based on approximate computing and redundancy is presented to mitigate radiation-induced soft errors in COTS microprocessors. Approximate Computing relies on the capability of certain applications to accept imprecise results to improve efficiency by sacrificing its results in a controlled manner. Our approach avoids the time overhead derived from hardening while preserving the detection and correction rate. Experimental results show that we can detect and correct SDC events improving the cross-section up to 160×, and keeping accuracy under control without compromising performance. Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2

The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people. Resolução de problema de valor no contorno associado ao projeto de reatores de fluxo disperso empregados no tratamento de efluentes

The objective of this work was to develop a numerical method to solve boundary value problems concerning to the use of dispersion model for describing the hydraulic behavior of chemical or biological reactors employed in the wastewater treatment. The numerical method was implemented in FORTRAN language generating a computational program which was applied to solve cases involving reaction kinetics of both integer and fractional orders. The developed method was able to solve the proposed problems evidencing to be a useful tool that provides more accurate design of wastewater treatment reactorsO objetivo deste trabalho foi desenvolver um método numérico para resolver problemas de valor no contorno concernentes ao uso do modelo de dispersão para descrever o comportamento hidráulico de reatores químicos ou biológicos empregados no tratamento de águas residuárias. O método numérico foi implementado em linguagem FORTRAN, gerando um programa computacional o qual foi usado para resolver casos envolvendo cinéticas de reação de ordens inteiras e fracionárias. O método desenvolvido foi capaz de resolver os problemas propostos evidenciando ser uma ferramenta útil para um projeto mais preciso de reatores de tratamento de águas residuária
