    Optimizing the train-catenary electrical interface in AC railways through dynamic control reconfiguration

    The power supply architecture of most AC electric railway vehicles is constituted by transformers and catenaries at increasingly high power levels. Inside the vehicles, the interface between the catenary and the DC-bus of the traction motors is based on a transformer and power electronics converters. A large part of these are AC-DC four quadrant converters that operate in parallel at relatively small switching frequencies. However, the use of the interleaving principle allows reaching a low harmonic distortion of the catenary current and imposing specific harmonic ranges in this current. Nevertheless, the current is not a pure sinusoidal wave and its harmonics can excite unwanted resonances due to the combined effect of the catenary distributed parameters, the substation equivalent impedance and the current frequency spectrum. This paper analyses this phenomenon and proposes a control strategy capable of minimizing the resonance effects in two different power supply architectures.The research has received funding from the FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia) under grant PD/BD/128051/2016.     A consensus prognostic gene expression classifier for ER positive breast cancer.

    BACKGROUND: A consensus prognostic gene expression classifier is still elusive in heterogeneous diseases such as breast cancer. RESULTS: Here we perform a combined analysis of three major breast cancer microarray data sets to hone in on a universally valid prognostic molecular classifier in estrogen receptor (ER) positive tumors. Using a recently developed robust measure of prognostic separation, we further validate the prognostic classifier in three external independent cohorts, confirming the validity of our molecular classifier in a total of 877 ER positive samples. Furthermore, we find that molecular classifiers may not outperform classical prognostic indices but that they can be used in hybrid molecular-pathological classification schemes to improve prognostic separation. CONCLUSION: The prognostic molecular classifier presented here is the first to be valid in over 877 ER positive breast cancer samples and across three different microarray platforms. Larger multi-institutional studies will be needed to fully determine the added prognostic value of molecular classifiers when combined with standard prognostic factors

    Integrating of the seahorse Hippocampus reidi in multi-trophic organic farms of oysters and shrimp: Effects of density and diet

    The goal of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility of culturing the seahorse Hippocampus reidi in an organic integrated multi-trophic aquaculture farm that produces the oyster Crassostrea brasiliana and the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects stocking density and food (natural zooplankton, Artemia nauplii, or both) for the juvenile I, which are fish from 1 to 15 days after birth. Stocking density effect was studied on growth and survival of juveniles II from 30 days to commercial size in net cages. Survival of the juvenile I was not affected by stocking densities from 2 to 5 ind L-1 and was greater than 70% in all treatments. Seahorse length, however, was inversely related to stocking density. Both treatments with wild zooplankton promoted higher seahorse survival and growth than diet composed exclusively by Artemia sp. during the first 15 days of life. Juvenile II growth decreased with stocking density from 5 to 40 ind m-3 but survival was not affected by it. The total benefit and proportion of colored animals increased significantly with stocking density. The present study confirms the technical feasibility of organic multi-trophic seahorse production in net cages. Even at the highest density tested the seahorses grew well and could generate high profits

    Bothrops jararaca Peptide with Anti-Hypertensive Action Normalizes Endothelium Dysfunction Involved in Physiopathology of Preeclampsia

    Preeclampsia, a pregnancy-specific syndrome characterized by hypertension, proteinuria and edema, is a major cause of fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality especially in developing countries. Bj-PRO-10c, a proline-rich peptide isolated from Bothrops jararaca venom, has been attributed with potent anti-hypertensive effects. Recently, we have shown that Bj-PRO-10c-induced anti-hypertensive actions involved NO production in spontaneous hypertensive rats. Using in vitro studies we now show that Bj-PRO-10c was able to increase NO production in human umbilical vein endothelial cells from hypertensive pregnant women (HUVEC-PE) to levels observed in HUVEC of normotensive women. Moreover, in the presence of the peptide, eNOS expression as well as argininosuccinate synthase activity, the key rate-limiting enzyme of the citrulline-NO cycle, were enhanced. In addition, excessive superoxide production due to NO deficiency, one of the major deleterious effects of the disease, was inhibited by Bj-PRO-10c. Bj-PRO-10c induced intracellular calcium fluxes in both, HUVEC-PE and HUVEC, which, however, led to activation of eNOS expression only in HUVEC-PE. Since Bj-PRO-10c promoted biological effects in HUVEC from patients suffering from the disorder and not in normotensive pregnant women, we hypothesize that Bj-PRO-10c induces its anti-hypertensive effect in mothers with preeclampsia. Such properties may initiate the development of novel therapeutics for treating preeclampsia

    Vários autores e entidades internacionais de referência têm determinado em documentos orientadores para os cuidados de psiquiatria e reabilitação psicossocial a pessoas com experiência de doença mental, a utilização de atividades artísticas como boa prática, já com alguma evidência, na promoção do recovery, participação social e qualidade de vida. O projeto Sincronias, resultante da parceria estabelecida entre a Associação Nova Aurora na Reabilitação e Reintegração Psicossocial (ANARP), a Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico do Porto (ESE) e o Laboratório de Reabilitação Psicossocial da ESTSIPP/FPCEUP, tem precisamente como objetivo contribuir para o desenvolvimento pessoal e inserção social de pessoas com experiência de doença mental grave, através do seu envolvimento num programa de atividades artísticas personalizado, ajustado às necessidades e perfil dos seus participantes, que facilite a criatividade, a expressão e o crescimento pessoal através das artes. O programa ocorrerá nas áreas da pintura, escultura, cerâmica, desenho, tipografia, entre outras e prevê o envolvimento dos participantes em iniciativas tão diversificadas como a sua integração nas unidades curriculares desenvolvidas na Licenciatura de Artes Visuais e Tecnologias Artísticas da ESE/IPP, a frequência de workshops/seminários promovidos quer nas instalações da ESE/IPP, quer na ANARP, e a organização e participação em exposições desenvolvidas em várias entidades culturais da cidade.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
