Polymeric pseudo-crown ether for cation recognition via cation template-assisted cyclopolymerization.

Cyclopolymerization is a chain polymerization of bifunctional monomers via alternating processes of intramolecular cyclization and intermolecular addition, to give soluble linear polymers consisting of in-chain cyclic structures. Though cyclopolymers comprising in-chain multiple large rings potentially show unique functionality, they generally require the elaborate design of bifunctional monomers. Here we report cation template-assisted cyclopolymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylates as an efficient strategy directly yielding polymeric pseudo-crown ethers with large in-chain cavities (up to 30-membered rings) for selective molecular recognition. The key is to select a size-fit metal cation for the spacer unit of the divinyl monomers to form a pseudo-cyclic conformation, where the two vinyl groups are suitably positioned for intramolecular cyclization. The marriage of supramolecular chemistry and polymer chemistry affords efficient, one-pot chemical transformation from common chemical reagents with simple templates to functional cyclopolymers

Quantifying Effects of Pharmacological Blockers of Cardiac Autonomous Control Using Variability Parameters

Get PDF
Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the most sensitive heart rate and blood pressure variability (HRV and BPV) parameters from a given set of well-known methods for the quantification of cardiovascular autonomic function after several autonomic blockades. Methods: Cardiovascular sympathetic and parasympathetic functions were studied in freely moving rats following peripheral muscarinic (methylatropine), β1-adrenergic (metoprolol), muscarinic + β1-adrenergic, α1-adrenergic (prazosin), and ganglionic (hexamethonium) blockades. Time domain, frequency domain and symbolic dynamics measures for each of HRV and BPV were classified through paired Wilcoxon test for all autonomic drugs separately. In order to select those variables that have a high relevance to, and stable influence on our target measurements (HRV, BPV) we used Fisher's Method to combine the p-value of multiple tests. Results: This analysis led to the following best set of cardiovascular variability parameters: The mean normal beat-to-beat-interval/value (HRV/BPV: meanNN), the coefficient of variation (cvNN = standard deviation over meanNN) and the root mean square differences of successive (RMSSD) of the time domain analysis. In frequency domain analysis the very-low-frequency (VLF) component was selected. From symbolic dynamics Shannon entropy of the word distribution (FWSHANNON) as well as POLVAR3, the non-linear parameter to detect intermittently decreased variability, showed the best ability to discriminate between the different autonomic blockades. Conclusion: Throughout a complex comparative analysis of HRV and BPV measures altered by a set of autonomic drugs, we identified the most sensitive set of informative cardiovascular variability indexes able to pick up the modifications imposed by the autonomic challenges. These indexes may help to increase our understanding of cardiovascular sympathetic and parasympathetic functions in translational studies of experimental diseases.Peer Reviewe

Problems in practical finite element analysis using Preisach hysteresis model

Get PDF
An efficient method, which is called the “inverse distribution function method”, for calculating the magnetic field strength H from the flux density B through the Preisach model is developed. By using the method, H can be directly obtained without iteration from B which is calculated by the usual FEM, with the magnetic vector potential as an unknown variable. The effects of the dimension n of the inverse distribution function on the CPU time and the memory requirements are investigated through a numerical example by increasing the dimension n of the inverse distribution function. It is shown that the additional CPU time for taking account of hysteresis is negligible when n is less than about 200</p

The Role Of Videolaparoscopy In The Diagnostic And Therapeutic Approach Of Nonpalpable Testis.

Evaluate the results from the first 5 years of experience with laparoscopy for diagnosis and treatment of nonpalpable testes. Medical records of 51 patients submitted to laparoscopic testicular exploration, during a 5-year period, were retrospectively analyzed. Patients' mean age was 65.7 months (median = 48) on the first procedure. The youngest patient was 10 months and the oldest was 14 years old on the first surgery. Twenty-four (47%) patients presented nonpalpable testes bilaterally, 7 (14%) only at the right side and 20 (39%) at the left, totaling 75 testicular units assessed. Patients who had their testes palpated after anesthetic induction were excluded from the study, and in all other cases, surgical management was based on the testicular position and viability. During the post-operative follow-up, surgical success was classified as palpable testis in scrotal sac, with adequate consistency and volume. Nine (12%) testes were not localized, but their vessels and deferent duct were atrophic. Two (3%) testes were intra-abdominal and atrophic, and 2 (3%) gonads, in the same patient, had a dysmorphic aspect. Nineteen (25%) testicular units were located close to the internal inguinal ring (peeping testes) and, in 22 (29%) units, the spermatic vessels and deferent duct penetrated the internal inguinal ring. Eight (10%) testes were located at a distance of less than 2 cm from the internal inguinal ring and 13 (17%) at a distance greater than 2 cm. The 2 intra-abdominal atrophic testes were removed. Inguinotomy was performed in a total of 41 (54%) cases, reaching a surgical success of 89%. Laparoscopic orchiopexy in one stage, without vascular ligation, was performed in 9 (12%) testes, which presented a distance of less than 2 cm from the internal inguinal ring, also with a surgical success index of 89%. Orchiopexy in 2 stages, with ligation of the spermatic vessels, was performed in 13 (17%) testicular units located at a distance greater than 2 cm from the internal inguinal ring, reaching 77% of good results. Videolaparoscopy is a safe and effective method for diagnosis and treatment of nonpalpable testis.29345-51; discussion 351-
