Combined in silico/in vivo analysis of mechanisms providing for root apical meristem self-organization and maintenance.

Background and aimsThe root apical meristem (RAM) is the plant stem cell niche which provides for the formation and continuous development of the root. Auxin is the main regulator of RAM functioning, and auxin maxima coincide with the sites of RAM initiation and maintenance. Auxin gradients are formed due to local auxin biosynthesis and polar auxin transport. The PIN family of auxin transporters plays a critical role in polar auxin transport, and two mechanisms of auxin maximum formation in the RAM based on PIN-mediated auxin transport have been proposed to date: the reverse fountain and the reflected flow mechanisms.MethodsThe two mechanisms are combined here in in silico studies of auxin distribution in intact roots and roots cut into two pieces in the proximal meristem region. In parallel, corresponding experiments were performed in vivo using DR5::GFP Arabidopsis plants.Key resultsThe reverse fountain and the reflected flow mechanism naturally cooperate for RAM patterning and maintenance in intact root. Regeneration of the RAM in decapitated roots is provided by the reflected flow mechanism. In the excised root tips local auxin biosynthesis either alone or in cooperation with the reverse fountain enables RAM maintenance.ConclusionsThe efficiency of a dual-mechanism model in guiding biological experiments on RAM regeneration and maintenance is demonstrated. The model also allows estimation of the concentrations of auxin and PINs in root cells during development and under various treatments. Sustainable import substitution in Russia : institutional conditions and efficiency imperatives

The article is devoted to the essence and relevance of import substitution as an effective strategy of Russian economy’s development within the sanctions’ constraint of Western countries. Authors scoped out the institutional features of sustainable import substitution as an object of the study. Authors highlighted the set of objective factors verifying the economic viability of import substitution and potential threats of these measures as well. Authors arranged the evaluation and analytical tools for studying the dependence on imports’ level in the context of certain industries, goods, and spheres of activity. Moreover, authors clarified the pattern for estimating the need for import substitution in a certain business entity, suggested the institutional conditions and determinants facilitating the best performance of import substitution in Russia. Special attention is given to the viability of choosing the appropriate model, developing tools, and mechanisms for implementing a comprehensive program of import substitution in Russia in the context of a multi-level policy including the following ones: enterprise - industry (cluster) – country’s economy. POETICS OF RUSSIAN TRANSLATIONS OF ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE’S DETECTIVE STORY "THE ADVENTURE OF THE SPECKLED BAND "

The article considers peculiar features found in Russian translations of Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective short story The Adventure of the Speckled Band done at the end of the 19th century. Creative writing of Conan Doyle as the author of short stories and novels about famous Sherlock Holmes had a great impact on the evolution of the detective fiction genre, which has been of great interest for readers and researchers in Russia. Numerous translations, made since the end of the 19th century, indicate the particularly important role of the English writer in the context of the formation and development of Russian-English relationships in the sphere of literature and the dialogue of the cultures. The paper deals with translations published in the weekly illustrated literary magazine Zvezda and a literary supplement to the Niva magazine. The research is based on the material being significant in terms of translation reception because translations reveal not only the attitude of the translator to the original work and its author but also the peculiarities in the perception of foreign literature by the Russian reader at a definite historical period of time. The analysis of the translations under study clearly shows various approaches to conveying the content of the fiction works, aimed at adapting the detective stories to the Russian environment. The translations are characterized by practically literal interpretation of the plot, loose handling of the source text, introduction of Russisms, used to achieve the mentioned aim. The article explains the reasons for the existence of the diffe­rent approaches and peculiarities in Russian translations. The paper provides a successive analysis of how the key elements of Conan Doyle’s poetics – from the story title to the image of the narrator, characteristics of the main heroes, as well as spatiotemporal settings of the story – are rendered into the Russian language

Plasma hardening of medium carbon steels

The structure, size and hardness of the zone of hardening of pre-annealed steels (30XHMA, 34XH1M, 35XH2Φ, 38XΓH, 40XHMA, 40XH2MA, 45) was studied after treatment with a plasma arc of direct polarity. It was shown that plasma hardening forms a thin layer of martensitic-austenitic structure with variable composition and hardness on the treated steel surface. The zone subjected to hardening was represented by marten site of different dispersion and ferrite veins. Between the quenching zone and the base metal there was a transition zone with a gradient structure of plate perlite and elements of perlite-ferrite base, the share of which was gradually increasing. The structural-phase structure of this zone provided a smooth transition of mechanical properties from the hardened layer to the base metal. Dependences for management of a structural condition, hardness and depth of a zone of hardening were determined. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd
