Using Semantic Linking to Understand Persons' Networks Extracted from Text

    Get PDF
In this work, we describe a methodology to interpret large persons' networks extracted from text by classifying cliques using the DBpedia ontology. The approach relies on a combination of NLP, Semantic web technologies, and network analysis. The classification methodology that first starts from single nodes and then generalizes to cliques is effective in terms of performance and is able to deal also with nodes that are not linked to Wikipedia. The gold standard manually developed for evaluation shows that groups of co-occurring entities share in most of the cases a category that can be automatically assigned. This holds for both languages considered in this study. The outcome of this work may be of interest to enhance the readability of large networks and to provide an additional semantic layer on top of cliques. This would greatly help humanities scholars when dealing with large amounts of textual data that need to be interpreted or categorized. Furthermore, it represents an unsupervised approach to automatically extend DBpedia starting from a corpus

Fifty years of European history through the Lens of Computational Linguistics: the De Gasperi Project

    Get PDF
In 2013 a collaboration was started between the Digital Humanities research unit and the Italian-German Historical institute at Fondazione Bruno Kessler, whose goal was to develop tools and strategies to give new insight into the public documents written by Alcide De Gasperi. Through the analysis of textual occurrences, semantic structures, and temporal patterns, the project, ending in 2017, has investigated the formation and evolution of De Gasperi's political action and the rhetorical discourse that accompanied its developments. Research of this kind has contributed to better understanding De Gasperi's thoughts, the links between his language and his political views and culture, and the instruments of his communication. On the other hand, it allows the design and development of automated research tools for the political domain. This is a distinctly interdisciplinary research project, in which historical inquiry interacts with methods of linguistic analysis and with information and communication technologies

Effects of abutment materials on peri-implant soft tissue health and stability: A network meta-analysis.

PURPOSE This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effect of the abutment material on peri-implant soft tissue health and stability. STUDY SELECTION An electronic and hand search was conducted until February 2022. Only prospective randomized trials (RCTs) and controlled clinical trials (CCTs) comparing titanium abutments with abutments made of different materials, with a follow-up of at least 6 months, were selected by two independent reviewers. Data on marginal bone loss (MBL) and peri-implant tissue indexes, i.e., plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), and recession (REC), were collected. The risk of bias for RCTs and non-RCTs was evaluated according to the tool reported in the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and the ROBINS-I tool, respectively. Both pairwise and network meta-analyses (NMA) were performed. RESULTS We included 18 relevant studies from 1,437 identified studies. Overall, 612 patients were treated, and 848 abutments were inserted. Five studies presented a low risk of bias. Pairwise meta-analysis showed that, as compared to titanium, zirconia abutments presented a significantly reduced MBL (0.20 mm, 95% Confidence Interval CI [0.14-0.26], P < 0.00001). No significant differences were found for the other outcomes. In the NMA, zirconia abutments demonstrated an 83.3% probability of achieving the highest rank in PI, an 87.0% in BOP, and a 65.0% in PD outcome, suggesting that zirconia abutments generally performed better than titanium and alumina abutments. CONCLUSIONS Within the limits of the present study, zirconia abutments seem a viable alternative to titanium ones

ramble on tracing movements of popular historical figures

We present RAMBLE ON, an application integrating a pipeline for frame-based information extraction and an interface to track and display movement trajectories. The code of the extraction pipeline and a navigator are freely available; moreover we display in a demonstrator the outcome of a case study carried out on trajectories of notable persons of the XX Century
