    Modeling context aware features for pervasive computing

    For more than two decades, research in the development of context-aware applications has gained significant attention, in which the context aware should be taken into account to adapt them to the requirements of the environment and users. However, advances in application models to support the development of these systems have not kept up. Researchers have been building and deploying context-aware applications with their behaviors often tailored to specific problem domains, by designing the anticipated context and the desired application behavior. Motivated by the raised facts, this paper presents a context aware model with ability to interact and to adapt smartly and dynamically to environment and needs of users. We are revisiting the context life cycle, especially the representation and the modeling of context features, regarding the relations within these features and the systems functionalities. Different kinds of components adaptation are described and scenarios are presented to illustrate these adaptations. As a proof of concept, we have simulated the context model in health care systems and show the results

    Hybrid mobile positioning managment framework based on radio communication and global positioning approaches

    Mobile devices location systems for remote objects (vehicle, person, commodity, etc.), such as RTLS (Real Time Location System) in general and AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) particularly for vehicles and persons, are increasingly used today by several enterprises. Indeed, this facilitates the management of personal, products, increases productivity, and so on. These systems use positioning devices such as GPS and communication devices to send remote location data. The first constraint of GPS is that it does not provide a precise position at any time. The extensions of GPS such as WAAS systems and A-GPS, that improve the precision, have also other constraints (availability and cost). The second constraint comes when sending remote location data. Often, the communication devices used for this purpose are GSM modules that send data on the GSM network. The use of GSM network is expensive to send data periodically. To overcome these drawbacks (improve precision and send data with minimum cost), we propose a framework on hybrid mobile devices management system to create a reliable and optimal location system by: i) coupling the radio devices at low integration cost with GPS devices, ii) allowing different mobile objects to cooperate and deliver the positioning data to the remote server

    Scenario-based software architecture for designing connectors framework in distributed system

    Software connectors is one of key word in enterprise information system. In recent years, software developers have facing more challenges of connectors which are used to connect distributed components. Design of connectors in an existing system encounters many issues such as choosing the connectors based on scenario quality, matching these connectors with design pattern, and implementing them. Especially, we concentrate on identifying the attributes that interest an observer, identifying the functions where these connectors could be applied, and keeping all applications clean after adding new connectors. Each problem is described by a scenario to design architecture, especially to design a connector based on architecture attributes. In this paper, we develop a software framework to design connectors between components and solution of these issues. A case study is done to maintain high level of independency between components and to illustrate this independency. This case study uses Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) and AspectJ, Design Pattern to and Program Slicing to solve main problems of design of connectors. A conclusion is given at the end of this paper

    Remote healthcare has made a revolution in the healthcare domain. However, an important problem this field is facing is supporting patients who are subjected to severe emergencies (as heart attacks) to be both monitored and protected while being at home. In this paper, we present a conceptual framework with the main objectives of: 1) emergency handling through monitoring patients, detecting emergencies and insuring fast emergency responses; 2) preventing an emergency from happening in the first place through protecting patients by organising their lifestyles and habits. To achieve these objectives, we propose a layered middleware. Our context model combines two modelling methods: probabilistic modelling to capture uncertain information and ontology to ease knowledge sharing and reuse. In addition, our system uses a two-level reasoning approach (ontology-based reasoning and Bayesian-based reasoning) to manage both certain and uncertain contextual parameters in an adaptive manner. Bayesian network is learned from ontology. Moreover, to ensure a more sophisticated decision-making for service presentation, influence diagram and analytic hierarchy process are used along with regular probabilistic rules (confidence level) and basic semantic logic rules

In the recent years, researchers are exploring how context aware systems can benefit humanity through assist patients, specifically those who suffer incurable diseases, to cope with their illness. In this paper, we direct our work to help people who suffer from Parkinson disease. We propose PHEN, Parkinson Helper Engine Network System, a context-aware system that aims to support Parkinson disease patients on m any levels. We use ontology is for context representation and modeling. Then the ontology based context model is used to learn with Bayesian Belief network (BBN) which is beneficial in handling the uncertainty aspect of context-aware systems

    Case studies of communications systems during harsh environments: A review of approaches, weaknesses, and limitations to improve quality of service

    The failure of communications systems may cause catastrophic damage to human life and economic activities as people are unable to communicate with each other in a timely manner and with a convenient quality of service. Therefore, the exchange of information is more than necessary for people in their everyday life or during harsh environments to prevent the death and injury of thousands of individuals. The study of communications systems behavior in harsh environments helps to design or select more resilient technologies that are capable of operating in challenging conditions. This article reviews existing approaches, major causes of failure, and weaknesses of communications systems during extreme events. First, we highlight the importance of communications systems, and then we examine related works, how communication may fail, and the effect of this failure on human life in general and during extreme events response. Furthermore, we study and analyze how communications are used during various stages of extreme events, and we identify the main weaknesses and limitations that communications systems may suffer based on many case studies. To conclude, we identify and discuss relevant attributes, requirements, and recommendations for communications systems to perform with a suitable quality of service during harsh environments and to reduce risks of communication failure in challenging conditions
