In this note we explain how the curriculum of the subject “Mechanism of mind and body” is designed and which characteristics of the curriculum has. We teach students the basis of understanding human being and the basic method of supporting daily lives in this subject. The curriculum is designed by applying the concept of ICF and we attempt to arrange the knowledge and skill of this field systematically as one field of the human science

Cerebral oscillatory activity during simulated driving using MEG

    Get PDF
We aimed to examine cerebral oscillatory differences associated with psychological processes during simulated car driving. We recorded neuromagnetic signals in 14 healthy volunteers using magnetoencephalography (MEG) during simulated driving. MEG data were analyzed using synthetic aperture magnetometry to detect the spatial distribution of cerebral oscillations. Group effects between subjects were analyzed statistically using a nonparametric permutation test. Oscillatory differences were calculated by comparison between passive viewing and active driving. Passive viewing was the baseline, and oscillatory differences during active driving showed an increase or decrease in comparison with a baseline. Power increase in the theta band was detected in the superior frontal gyrus (SFG) during active driving. Power decreases in the alpha, beta, and low gamma bands were detected in the right inferior parietal lobe (IPL), left postcentral gyrus (PoCG), middle temporal gyrus (MTG), and posterior cingulate gyrus (PCiG) during active driving. Power increase in the theta band in the SFG may play a role in attention. Power decrease in the right IPL may reflect selectively divided attention and visuospatial processing, whereas that in the left PoCG reflects sensorimotor activation related to driving manipulation. Power decreases in the MTG and PCiG may be associated with object recognition

2021-02-26.Reprogramming children's cells to study cartilage diseases. 2021-02-26.Chondrodysplasias are hereditary diseases caused by mutations in the components of growth cartilage. Although the unfolded protein response (UPR) has been identified as a key disease mechanism in mouse models, no suitable in vitro system has been reported to analyze the pathology in humans. Here, we developed a three-dimensional culture protocol to differentiate hypertrophic chondrocytes from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and examine the phenotype caused by MATN3 and COL10A1 mutations. Intracellular MATN3 or COL10 retention resulted in increased ER stress markers and ER size in most mutants, but activation of the UPR was dependent on the mutation. Transcriptome analysis confirmed a UPR with wide-ranging changes in bone homeostasis, extracellular matrix composition, and lipid metabolism in the MATN3 T120M mutant, which further showed altered cellular morphology in iPSC-derived growth-plate-like structures in vivo. We then applied our in vitro model to drug testing, whereby trimethylamine N-oxide led to a reduction of ER stress and intracellular MATN3

Central nervous system post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: The Nagasaki transplant group experience

    Get PDF
A 17-year-old male received allogeneic transplantation for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and presented with generalized seizures due to a solitary brain lesion with massive necrosis on day +621. Epstein?Barr virus (EBV) DNA copies were below the cut-off value in plasma. Stereotactic biopsy of the cerebral lesion confirmed the diagnosis of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) with large atypical cells positive for CD20 and EBER.In order to diagnose primary central nervous system PTLD, the biopsy should be applied as early as possible when brain lesion with necrosis develops in post-transplant patients regardless of EBV-DNA in plasma

All students in the nursing care department must take the general graduate examination. The result does not afect students\u27 acquisition of the national license now. However, it is expected that each student must pass the examination to get the license in the future. We, professors in the nursing care department, educate and encourage them through various opportunities to become good care workers. The goal of passing the examination becomes more diicult year after year as a whole, for the acknowledged level of students lowers year after year. However, the knowledge of nursing care is critically important in providing appropriate nursing care. Therefore all the professors of the department determined to educate all the students in order to pass the examination. It is a hard object for the professors to attain. We must improve our teaching skills through our faculty development activities. Last year we had many special lessons for our students to prepare the examination. The number of passing the examination improved amazingly last year, compared to the previous year. We will continue to improve our teaching skills to attain our goal, to make sure all the students pass the examinat ion

A study was carried out to examine the effects of welfare education camp on the image of camping in Urawa University Junior College students (n=117). The number of reactive words to the stimulus word (camp) in the post-camp significantly increased compared with the pre-camp. In the pre- and post-camp, common reactive words were the tent, the mountain, the river, and the campfire, etc. In the classification reaction words, the feelings type, the element type and the environmental type showed the decreasing tendency after practicing camping. On the other hand, the sociality type (for example, friend and friendship, cooperation, and smile, etc.) significantly increased in the post-camp

Two genetic variants of CD38 in subjects with autism spectrum disorder and controls

The neurobiological basis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remains poorly understood. Given the role of CD38 in social recognition through oxytocin (OT) release, we hypothesized that CD38 may play a role in the etiology of ASD. Here, we first examined the immunohistochemical expression of CD38 in the hypothalamus of post-mortem brains of non-ASD subjects and found that CD38 was colocalized with OT in secretory neurons. In studies of the association between CD38 and autism, we analyzed 10 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and mutations of CD38 by re-sequencing DNAs mainly from a case-control study in Japan, and Caucasian cases mainly recruited to the Autism Genetic Resource Exchange (AGRE). The SNPs of CD38, rs6449197 (p 70; designated as high-functioning autism (HFA)) in the U.S. 104 AGRE family trios, but not with Japanese 188 HFA subjects. A mutation that caused tryptophan to replace arginine at amino acid residue 140 (R140W; (rs1800561, 4693C>T)) was found in 0.6-4.6% of the Japanese population and was associated with ASD in the smaller case-control study. The SNP was clustered in pedigrees in which the fathers and brothers of T-allele-carrier probands had ASD or ASD traits. In this cohort OT plasma levels were lower in subjects with the T allele than in those without. One proband with the T allele who was taking nasal OT spray showed relief of symptoms. The two variant CD38 poloymorphysms tested may be of interest with regard of the pathophysiology of ASD. © 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd and the Japan Neuroscience Society
