Early and late effects of objecthood and spatial frequency on event-related potentials and gamma band activity
Background: The visual system may process spatial frequency information in a low-to-high, coarse-to-fine sequence. In particular, low and high spatial frequency information may be processed via different pathways during object recognition, with LSF information projected rapidly to frontal areas and HSF processed later in visual ventral areas. In an electroencephalographic study, we examined the time course of information processing for images filtered to contain different ranges of spatial frequencies. Participants viewed either high spatial frequency (HSF), low spatial frequency (LSF), or unfiltered, broadband (BB) images of objects or non-object textures, classifying them as showing either man-made or natural objects, or non-objects. Event-related potentials (ERPs) and evoked and total gamma band activity (eGBA and tGBA) recorded using the electroencephalogram were compared for object and non-object images across the different spatial frequency ranges. Results: The visual P1 showed independent modulations by object and spatial frequency, while for the N1 these factors interacted. The P1 showed more positive amplitudes for objects than non-objects, and more positive amplitudes for BB than for HSF images, which in turn evoked more positive amplitudes than LSF images. The peak-to-peak N1 showed that the N1 was much reduced for BB non-objects relative to all other images, while HSF and LSF non-objects still elicited as negative an N1 as objects. In contrast, eGBA was influenced by spatial frequency and not objecthood, while tGBA showed a stronger response to objects than non-objects. Conclusions: Different pathways are involved in the processing of low and high spatial frequencies during object recognition, as reflected in interactions between objecthood and spatial frequency in the visual N1 component. Total gamma band seems to be related to a late, probably high-level representational process

A combinatorial flow-based formulation for temporal bin packing problems
We consider two neighboring generalizations of the classical bin packing problem: the temporal bin packing problem (TBPP) and the temporal bin packing problem with fire-ups (TBPP-FU). In both cases, the task
is to arrange a set of given jobs, characterized by a resource consumption and an activity window, on homogeneous servers of limited capacity. To keep operational costs but also energy consumption low, TBPP
is concerned with minimizing the number of servers in use, whereas TBPP-FU additionally takes into account the switch-on processes required for their operation. Either way, challenging integer optimization
problems are obtained, which can differ significantly from each other despite the seemingly only marginal
variation of the problems. In the literature, a branch-and-price method enriched with many preprocessing
steps (for TBPP) and compact formulations (for TBPP-FU), benefiting from numerous reduction methods,
have emerged as, currently, the most promising solution methods. In this paper, we introduce, in a sense,
a unified solution framework for both problems (and, in fact, a wide variety of further interval scheduling
applications) based on graph theory. Any scientific contributions in this direction failed so far because of
the exponential size of the associated networks. The approach we present in this article does not change
the theoretical exponentiality itself, but it can make it controllable by clever construction of the resulting
graphs. In particular, for the first time all classical benchmark instances (and even larger ones) for the
two problems can be solved – in times that significantly improve those of the previous approaches
Micorrización de plantulas en contendor de Pinus nigra con Suillus granulates bajo condiciones de campo
Seedling mycorrhization acts as an efficient tool for improving the quality of seedlings. In this study, the effectiveness of Suillus granulatus, originating from Pinus heldreichii forests (Montenegro), to produce containerized ectomycorrhizal seedlings of autochthonous Pinus nigra in open field conditions was investigated. Spore (106, 107, 108) and vegetative (1:16, 1:8, 1:4) inoculation on ectomycorrhizal formation and seedling growth were tested. Spore and vegetative inoculums of autochthonous Pisolithus arhizus were used in the same trial as additional control treatments. The utilization of vegetative and spore inoculums of autochthonous S. granulatus has proven to be an effective method of obtaining containerized ectomycorrhizal P. nigra seedlings under open field conditions after 11 months. S. granulatus spore inoculations resulted in well developed ectomycorrhiza, decreasing the growth of the P. nigra seedlings in the first growing season. Mycelial inoculations resulted in slightly developed S. granulatus ectomycorrhiza, which increased the growth of the seedlings. Therefore, it would be feasible to use spore inocula of S. granulatus, with 106 spores per plant, to produce ectomycorrhizal P. nigra plants on a large scale. Controlled mycorrhizal inoculation of seedlings is not a common practice in Montenegrin and Serbian nurseries; as such, the obtained results will contribute to the enhancement of nursery production of Pinus nigra and other conifers. This also could be assumed as a starting point for many further efforts and investigations with autochthonous fungal and plant material in this region.

Improved flow-based formulations for the skiving stock problem
Thanks to the rapidly advancing development of (commercial) MILP software and hardware components, pseudo-polynomial formulations have been established as a powerful tool for solving cutting and packing problems in recent years. In this paper, we focus on the one-dimensional skiving stock problem (SSP), where a given inventory of small items has to be recomposed to obtain a maximum number of larger objects, each satisfying a minimum threshold length. In the literature, different modeling approaches for the SSP have been proposed, and the standard flow-based formulation has turned out to lead to the best trade-off between efficiency and solution time. However, especially for instances of practically meaningful sizes, the resulting models involve very large numbers of variables and constraints, so that appropriate reduction techniques are required to decrease the numerical efforts. For that reason, this paper introduces two improved flow-based formulations for the skiving stock problem that are able to cope with much larger problem sizes. By means of extensive experiments, these new models are shown to possess significantly fewer variables as well as an average better computational performance compared to the standard arcflow formulation
Luminance and color inputs to mid-level and high-level vision
We investigated the interdependence of activity within
the luminance (L þ M) and opponent chromatic (L M
and S [LþM]) postreceptoral mechanisms in mid-level
and high-level vision. Mid-level processes extract
contours and perform figure-background organization
whereas high-level processes depend on additional
semantic input, such as object knowledge. We collected
mid-level (good/poor continuation) and high-level
(object/nonobject) two-alternative forced-choice
discrimination threshold data over a range of conditions
that isolate mechanisms or simultaneously stimulate
them. The L M mechanism drove discrimination in the
presence of very low luminance inputs. Contrastdependent
interactions between the luminance and L
M as well as combined L M and S (L þ M) inputs
were also found, but S (L þ M) signals, on their own,
did not interact with luminance. Mean mid-level and
high-level thresholds were related, with luminance
providing inputs capable of sustaining performance over
a broader, linearly corresponding range of contrasts
when compared to L M signals. The observed
interactions are likely to be driven by L M signals and
relatively low luminance signals (approximately 0.05–
0.09 L þ M contrast) facilitating each other. The results
are consistent with previous findings on low-level
interactions between chromatic and luminance signals
and demonstrate that functional interdependence
between the geniculate mechanisms extends to the
highest stages of the visual hierarchy
Chromatic contrast in luminance-defined images affects performance and neural activity during a shape classification task
Models of object recognition generally emphasize the
importance of luminance-defined shape. However, it is
still not fully understood how color signals combine with
luminance signals to affect object-related form
processing. This electroencephalographic study aimed to
examine the contribution of chromatic contrast by
assessing its effects on the time course of shape-related
processing. Participants classified Gaborized images of
object shapes, nonobject shapes, and patches of
pseudorandomly scattered Gabors. Stimuli excited (a)
the luminance (LþM) channel alone, (b) luminance and LM
channels, or (c) luminance, L-M, and S-(LþM) channels
and were presented either at mean discrimination
threshold or at twice this mean threshold. As expected,
classification accuracy was comparable at threshold, as
were the attributes of the early, perceptual first negative
(N1) component of the event-related potential (ERP).
Differences emerged at suprathreshold: Objects defined
by the full combination of channels were associated with
the poorest performance and the lowest N1 amplitude.
Shape sensitivity was not consistently observed in the
N1 but was more evident in the late positive potential
(LPP), a cognitive ERP component. Both the N1 and the
LPP were affected by the amount and type of contrast in
the image. While the effects of luminance and L-M
contrast were similar, affecting the ERP selectively during
the N1 and LPP period, S-(LþM) contrast elicited a
sustained shift in amplitude. Our results demonstrate,
for the first time using a combination of behavioral as
well as early and late electrophysiological effects, that
shape classification is determined by both the chromatic
and the luminance content of the image
Uporaba lokalnih sojeva bakterije Lactococcus lactis kao starter kultura u proizvodnji tradicionalnih crnogorskih sireva
The aim of this study is to characterise and examine the biochemical properties of 40 Lactococcus lactis strains isolated from indigenous Montenegrin dairy products in order to explore their potential to be used as starter cultures for producing typical Montenegrin cheese, such as ‘bijeli sir’, ‘masni sir’ and ‘njeguški sir’. Their safety regarding the production of biogenic amines, the presence of antimicrobial resistance and the antibacterial activity against relevant pathogens and spoilage microorganisms has also been tested. Based on the characterisation, all strains belong to L. lactis ssp. lactis. Out of these 40 strains, 23 displayed rapid acidification ability and proteolysis. However, none of the strains exhibited the ability of lipid degradation. Most of the strains were not associated with any health risk investigated. Summing up, a large percentage (27.5 %) of the tested strains showed good properties. These strains should be further examined for their possible application as specific starter cultures in the production of indigenous cheese in MontenegroSvrha je ovoga rada bila okarakterizirati i ispitati biokemijska svojstva 40 sojeva bakterije Lactococcus lactis, izoliranih iz autohtonih crnogorskih mliječnih proizvoda, te istražiti mogućnost njihove uporabe kao starter kultura u proizvodnji tipičnih crnogorskih sireva, kao što su bijeli sir, masni sir i njeguški sir. Također je ispitana sigurnost primjene tih sojeva, tj. sposobnost proizvodnje biogenih amina, antimikrobna rezistencija i sposobnost suzbijanja rasta važnih patogenih mikroorganizama i uzročnika kvarenja hrane. Karakterizacijom je utvrđeno da svih 40 sojeva pripadaju podvrsti L. lactis ssp. lactis. Njih 23 imala su sposobnost brzog zakiseljavanja i proteolize. Međutim, niti jedan soj nije pokazao sposobnost razgradnje lipida.
