The "Cognitive Turn": A Short Guide for Nervous Drivers.
In this brief primer on the emergent field of cognitive literary criticism, I aim to offer a tentative outline of its more representative lines of research after roughly twenty to twenty five years of activity. One of my main concerns will be to attend to some of the main objections that the field has been charged with in its short life, and to highlight the ways in which cognitive critics have addressed such objections. After a brief sketch of the main fields of activity, I will consider some of the possible future directions, with a focus on the different ways in which cognitive critics have embraced enactive approach-es to embodied and embedded cognition
Physics reach of CERN-based SuperBeam neutrino oscillation experiments
We compare the physics potential of two representative options for a
SuperBeam in Europe, studying the achievable precision at 1\sigma with which
the CP violation phase (\delta) could be measured, as well as the mass
hierarchy and CP violation discovery potentials. The first setup corresponds to
a high energy beam aiming from CERN to a 100 kt liquid argon detector placed at
the Pyh\"asalmi mine (2300 km), one of the LAGUNA candidate sites. The second
setup corresponds to a much lower energy beam, aiming from CERN to a 500 kt
water \v{C}erenkov detector placed at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory
(730 km). This second option is also studied for a baseline of 650 km,
corresponding to the LAGUNA candidate sites of Umbria and the Canfranc
underground laboratory. All results are presented also for scenarios with
statistics lowered by factors of 2, 4, 8 and 16 to study the possible
reductions of flux, detector mass or running time allowed by the large value of
\theta_{13} recently measured.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
Reassessing the sensitivity to leptonic CP violation
We address the validity of the usual procedure to determine the sensitivity
of neutrino oscillation experiments to CP violation. An explicit calibration of
the test statistic is performed through Monte Carlo simulations for several
experimental setups. We find that significant deviations from a
distribution with one degree of freedom occur for experimental setups with low
sensitivity to . In particular, when the allowed region to which
is constrained at a given confidence level is comparable to the whole
allowed range, the cyclic nature of the variable manifests and the premises of
Wilk's theorem are violated. This leads to values of the test statistic
significantly lower than a distribution at that confidence level. On
the other hand, for facilities which can place better constraints on
the cyclic nature of the variable is hidden and, as the potential of the
facility improves, the values of the test statistics first become slightly
higher than and then approach asymptotically a distribution. The role
of sign degeneracies is also discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, RevTeX4. The discussion of the results has been
improved and considerably extended. Version accepted for publication in JHE
Rental Housing: Divorce Or Annulment Of The Parties
The purpose of increasing the supply in the market lettings Spanish accompanied by greater legal certainty to the parties and protection of tenants has been delivered with the new Law 19/2009, of November 23 amending the rules of urban leases. We analyze the possibility of refusal to extend legal, as long as is contemplated in the contract, when the landlord needs to occupy the house for your spouse in the event of a divorce decree or marriage annulment. This course requires a parallel analysis with the system of judicial allocation of use of the rented family home in cases of separation, annulment and divorce of the tenant
Modification And Resolution Of The Contract Of Trip Combined: Cancellation Of The Trip By The Organizer And Right Of Withdrawal Of The Tourist
The present study aims to consider in parallel the different legal consequences, rights and obligations of the involved subjects in a contract of travel combined in the case of modification, cancellation and withdrawal of the contract. On the one hand, the modification or cancellation by the Organizer will allow analysis of avoidance of the contract at the request of the consumer, who does not accept the significant modification of some essential element of the contract the organizer has been forced to introduce. Be on the other hand, when it is the consumer who decides that the trip not be effect or as the law says "nullifies the services requested or contracted" we taken the existence of a "right of withdrawal" and its consequences. Ultimately, the possibility of cancellation by the organizer and the consequent rights of refund or completion of another trip and the right to compensation for breach of contract will be weighed with the reflection on the existence of a real right of withdrawal of the tourist to subject certain penalties is obliged to justify its decision. The doctrine will be used to achieve this goal, and recent within the regime of safeguards jurisprudence for the tourist and the consumer is regulated in specific legislation
Dation In Payment Of The Mortgaged Homestead
The indebtedness of Spanish households coupled with a marital crisis, requires finding solutions to combine the protection of family interests, mainly of children, housing needs of society and the satisfaction of the creditor's right to credit mortgage crisis when the family faces the mortgage payment that affects the family housing. Also, new laws on regional express recognition of the custody and control of the destiny of the family housing in cases of divorce and separation through formulas such as the sale of the house, let consider the use of dation in payment of the family housing as a way to avoid foreclosure in cases of marital crisis in the context of current economic crisis
Who is coming from Vanuatu to New Zealand under the new recognized Seasonal employer program ?
New Zealand's new Recognized Seasonal Employer program allows workers from the Pacific Islands to come to New Zealand for up to seven months to work in the horticulture and viticulture industries. One of the explicit objectives of the program is to encourage economic development in the Pacific. This paper reports the results of a baseline survey taken in Vanuatu, which the authors use to examine who wants to participate in the program, and who is selected among those interested. The findings show that the main participants are males in their late 20s to early 40s, and most are married and have children. Most workers are subsistence farmers in Vanuatu and have not completed more than 10 years of schooling. Such workers would be unlikely to be accepted under existing migration channels. Nevertheless, the program workers from Vanuatu tend to come from wealthier households, and have better English literacy and health than individuals not applying for the program. Lack of knowledge about the policy and the costs of applying appear to be the main barriers preventing poorer individuals applying.Access to Finance,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Labor Markets,Housing&Human Habitats,Work&Working Conditions
