Imperfect rationality, macroeconomic equilibrium and price rigidities
We introduce some elements of Prospect Theory into a general equilibrium model with monoolistic competition in the good market and real wage rigidities due to (right to manage or efficient) wage bargaining, or to efficiency wages. We show that, under these types of labor market frictions, an increase in workers’ loss aversion: (i) reduces the equilibrium wage and in this way increases potential output; (ii) induces workers to work and consume less and in this way decreases potential output. If the former effect is greater (smaller) than the latter one, loss aversion increases (decreases) potential output. We also show that, under all the types of labor market frictions we consider, if loss aversion reduces equilibrium output, it also enhances the plausibility of nominal price rigidities
On measuring the Galactic dark matter halo with hypervelocity stars
Hypervelocity stars (HVSs) travel from the Galactic Centre across the dark
matter halo of the Milky Way, where they are observed with velocities in excess
of the Galactic escape speed. Because of their quasi-radial trajectories, they
represent a unique probe of the still poorly constrained dark matter component
of the Galactic potential. In this paper, we present a new method to produce
such constraints. Our likelihood is based on the local HVS density obtained by
back-propagating the observed phase space position and quantifies the ejection
probability along the orbit. To showcase our method, we apply it to simulated
Gaia samples of stars in three realistic Galactic potentials with
dark matter components parametrized by spheroidal NFW profiles. We find that
individual HVSs exhibit a degeneracy in the scale mass-scale radius plane
() and are able to measure only the combination .
Likewise, a degeneracy is also present between and the spheroidal
axis-ratio . In the absence of observational errors, we show the whole
sample can nail down both parameters with {\it sub-per cent} precision (about
and for and respectively) with no systematic bias.
This remarkable power to constrain deviations from a symmetric halo is a
consequence of the Galactocentric origin of HVSs. To compare our results with
other probes, we break the degeneracy in the scale parameters and impose a
mass-concentration relation. The result is a competitive precision on the
virial mass of about .Comment: See Fig. 8 for a summar
Phase Equilibrium of Binary Mixtures in Mixed Dimensions
We study the stability of a Bose-Fermi system loaded into an array of coupled
one-dimensional (1D) "tubes", where bosons and fermions experience different
dimensions: Bosons are heavy and strongly localized in the 1D tubes, whereas
fermions are light and can hop between the tubes. Using the 174Yb-6Li system as
a reference, we obtain the equilibrium phase diagram. We find that, for both
attractive and repulsive interspecies interaction, the exact treatment of 1D
bosons via the Bethe ansatz implies that the transitions between pure fermion
and any phase with a finite density of bosons can only be first order and never
continuous, resulting in phase separation in density space. In contrast, the
order of the transition between the pure boson and the mixed phase can either
be second or first order depending on whether fermions are allowed to hop
between the tubes or they also are strictly confined in 1D. We discuss the
implications of our findings for current experiments on 174Yb-6Li mixtures as
well as Fermi-Fermi mixtures of light and heavy atoms in a mixed dimensional
optical lattice system.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
The unbearable lightness of bone marrow homeostasis
The anatomical and functional dimensions of bone marrow topography have been at the forefront of modern bone and immunological research for many years and remain a source of complexity and perplexity due to the multitude of microhabitats within this microenvironment. In fact, research has uncovered fascinating functional aspects of bone marrow residents, and the bone marrow niche has been identified as the foremost reservoir of a variety of cells including hematopoietic, skeletal and endothelial stem/progenitor cells. The physical interactions of the marrow residents, combined with the release of cytokines and growth factors, organize well-defined operative compartments, which preserve bone and immune cell homeostasis. In a simplistic view, both the hematopoietic and bone marrow stromal (mesenchymal) stem/progenitor cell populations dwell at the interface between the endosteum and the bone marrow area (endosteal niche) and in the perivascular space (vascular niche). Indeed, the tantalizing hypothesis of bone marrow regulatory dependency on these niches is supported by current research insofar as the increase in the number of osteoblasts results in a concomitant increase in the hematopoietic population, indicating that the osteoblasts and the endosteal niche are key components of HSC maintenance. On the other hand, impaired function of the vascular niche compromises the endosteal niche's ability to support hematopoiesis. These fascinating discoveries indicate that there are strong ties between bone marrow inhabitants within the confines of the bone marrow itself. When these ties fail, niche-niche communication suffers and results in reduced bone formation, enfeebled hematopoiesis and unrestrained HSC migration through blood circulation. This study focused on the extraordinary homeostatic equilibrium and function of both bone and immune cells within the spatially defined microenvironment of bone marrow. But how important is the anatomically outlined scenery in which the bone marrow entity supports and hosts the hematopoietic elements
Filter Bank Multicarrier for Massive MIMO
This paper introduces filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) as a potential
candidate in the application of massive MIMO communication. It also points out
the advantages of FBMC over OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing)
in the application of massive MIMO. The absence of cyclic prefix in FBMC
increases the bandwidth efficiency. In addition, FBMC allows carrier
aggregation straightforwardly. Self-equalization, a property of FBMC in massive
MIMO that is introduced in this paper, has the impact of reducing (i)
complexity; (ii) sensitivity to carrier frequency offset (CFO); (iii)
peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR); (iv) system latency; and (v) increasing
bandwidth efficiency. The numerical results that corroborate these claims are
presented.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Tissue location of resistance in apple to the rosy apple aphid established by electrical penetration graphs
A study of the constitutive resistance of the apple cultivar Florina, Malus domestica Borkh. (Rosaceae), to the rosy apple aphid, Dysaphis plantaginea (Passerini) (Homoptera Aphididae), was performed for the first time by the electrical penetration graph (DC-EPG) system, using the susceptible apple cultivar Smoothe as control. All experiments were conducted with apterous adult virginoparae. The results showed a constitutive resistance in Florina due to a much longer period before the first probe reflecting surface factors. Some weak indications were found for pre-phloem resistance and initiating phloem access was not affected as inferred from equal time to show phloem salivation. However, the complete absence of phloem ingestion indicates a major resistance factor in the phloem sieve elements, most likely in the sieve element sap. Surface factors could have affected tissue related variables and this should be studied further. Anyhow, the strong constitutive resistance in Florina, either on the surface alone or in the phloem as well, effectively prevented reliable experiments on induced resistance, previously detected by molecular methods
Pilot Decontamination in CMT-based Massive MIMO Networks
Pilot contamination problem in massive MIMO networks operating in
time-division duplex (TDD) mode can limit their expected capacity to a great
extent. This paper addresses this problem in cosine modulated multitone (CMT)
based massive MIMO networks; taking advantage of their so-called blind
equalization property. We extend and apply the blind equalization technique
from single antenna case to multi-cellular massive MIMO systems and show that
it can remove the channel estimation errors (due to pilot contamination effect)
without any need for cooperation between different cells or transmission of
additional training information. Our numerical results advocate the efficacy of
the proposed blind technique in improving the channel estimation accuracy and
removal of the residual channel estimation errors caused by the users of the
other cells.Comment: Accepted in ISWCS 201
Frequency Spreading Equalization in Multicarrier Massive MIMO
Application of filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) as an effective method for
signaling over massive MIMO channels has been recently proposed. This paper
further expands the application of FBMC to massive MIMO by applying frequency
spreading equalization (FSE) to these channels. FSE allows us to achieve a more
accurate equalization. Hence, higher number of bits per symbol can be
transmitted and the bandwidth of each subcarrier can be widened. Widening the
bandwidth of each subcarrier leads to (i) higher bandwidth efficiency; (ii)
lower complexity; (iii) lower sensitivity to carrier frequency offset (CFO);
(iv) reduced peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR); and (iv) reduced latency. All
these appealing advantages have a direct impact on the digital as well as
analog circuitry that is needed for the system implementation. In this paper,
we develop the mathematical formulation of the minimum mean square error (MMSE)
FSE for massive MIMO systems. This analysis guides us to decide on the number
of subcarriers that will be sufficient for practical channel models.Comment: Accepted in IEEE ICC 2015 - Workshop on 5G & Beyond - Enabling
