Background: Evolving atrophic macular degeneration represents at least 80% of all macular degenerations and is currently without a standardized care. Autologous fat transplantation (AFT) efficacy was demonstrated by several studies, since these cells are able to produce growth factors. The aim of the work was to demonstrate possible therapeutic effect of the joined suprachoroidal graft of adipocytes, adipose derived stem-cells (ADSCs) in tissue adiposeā€™s stromal vascular fractions (SVF), and platelet rich plasma (PRP). Methods: Twelve eyes in 12 dry age macular degeneration (AMD) patients, aged 71.25 (SD Ā± 6.8) between 62 and 80 years, were analyzed. A complete ocular evaluation was performed using: best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), retinographic analysis, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, microperimetry, computerized visual field, and standard electroretinogram (ERG). Each eye received a cell in graft between choroid and sclera by means of the variant second Limoli, grafting of mature fat cells and ADSCs in SVF enriched with PRP (LRRT). In order to test if the differences pre- and post-treatment were significant the Wilcoxon signed rank test has been performed. Results: Adverse effects were not reported in the patients. After surgery with LRRT the most significant increase in the ERG values was recorded by scotopic rod-ERG (answer coming from the rods), from 41.26 to 60.83 Ī¼Volts (ĀµV) with an average increase of 47.44% highly significant (p<0.05). Moderately significant was the one recorded by scotopic maximal ERG (answer coming from the rods and cones), from 112.22 to 129.68 Ī¼V with an average increase of 15.56% (p<0.1). Conclusions: Cell-mediated therapy based on growth factors used appears interesting because it can improve the retinal functionality responses in the short term. The ERG could, therefore, be used to monitor the effect of cell-mediated regenerative therapies

BackgroundIn utero exposure to endocrine disrupting compounds including dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) has been hypothesized to increase risk of obesity later in life.ObjectivesThe Center for the Health Assessment of Mothers and Children of Salinas (CHAMACOS) study is a longitudinal birth cohort of low-income Latinas living in a California agricultural community. We examined the relation of in utero DDT and DDE exposure to child obesity at 7 years of age. We also examined the trend with age (2, 3.5, 5, and 7 years) in the exposure-obesity relation.MethodsWe included 270 children with o,pĀ“-DDT, p,pĀ“-DDT, and p,pĀ“-DDE concentrations measured in maternal serum during pregnancy (nanograms per gram lipid) and complete 7-year follow-up data including weight (kilograms) and height (centimeters). Body mass index (BMI; kilograms per meter squared) was calculated and obesity was defined as ā‰„ 95th percentile on the sex-specific BMI-for-age Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2000 growth charts.ResultsAt 7 years, 96 (35.6%) children were obese. A 10-fold increase in o,pĀ“-DDT, p,pĀ“-DDT, or p,pĀ“-DDE, was nonsignificantly associated with increased odds (OR) of obesity [o,pĀ“-DDT adjusted (adj-) OR = 1.17, 95% CI: 0.75, 1.82; p,pĀ“-DDT adj-OR = 1.19, 95% CI: 0.81, 1.74; p,pĀ“-DDE adj-OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 0.72, 2.06]. With increasing age at follow-up, we observed a significant trend toward a positive association between DDT and DDE exposure and odds of obesity.ConclusionWe did not find a significant positive relation between in utero DDT and DDE exposure and obesity status of 7-year-old children. However, given the observed trend with age, continued follow-up will be informative

Theoretical fits of the \delta Cephei light, radius and radial velocity curves

We present a theoretical investigation of the light, radius and radial velocity variations of the prototype Ī“\delta Cephei. We find that the best fit model accounts for luminosity and velocity amplitudes with an accuracy better than 0.8Ļƒ0.8\sigma, and for the radius amplitude with an accuracy of 1.7Ļƒ1.7\sigma. The chemical composition of this model suggests a decrease in both helium (0.26 vs 0.28) and metal (0.01 vs 0.02) content in the solar neighborhood. Moreover, distance determinations based on the fit of light curves agree at the 0.8Ļƒ0.8\sigma level with the trigonometric parallax measured by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). On the other hand, distance determinations based on angular diameter variations, that are independent of interstellar extinction and of the pp-factor value, indicate an increase of the order of 5% in the HST parallax.Comment: accepted for publication on ApJ Letter

Fingering a Murderer: A Successful Anthropological and Radiological Collaboration

We illustrate an interdisciplinary approach to identify a victim in a case with complex taphonomic and procedural issues. Burning, fragmentation, species commingling, and examination by multiple experts required anthropological preparation and analysis combined with radio- graphic adaptations to image and match trabecular patterns in unusually small, burned specimens. A missing person was last seen in the company of a reclusive female on a remote rural property. A warranted search found several burn sites containing human and animal bones. Fragment prepara- tion, analysis, and development of a biological profile by anthropologists enabled examination by the odontologist, molecular biologist, and radiolo- gist, and justified use of antemortem radiographs from one potential victim. Visual and radiological comparison resulted in a positive (later confirmed) identification of the victim by radiological matches of three carpal phalanges. Although some dimensional changes are expected with burning, morphological details were preserved, aided by selection of relatively intact, small bones for comparison
