Historical structures, being an important part of cultural heritage, have shown extreme vulnerability to seismic actions. A clear understanding of the performance of them is thus of critical importance for taking preventive actions. This paper presents a case study related to pushover analysis of a historical masonry structure located in Tunceli, Turkey. The evaluated monument is Elti Hatun Mosque located in the seismic zone 2 according to seismic zone map of Turkey. The mosque is modeled and analyzed with Diana finite element software on the base of real dimensions measured on site. Material properties are obtained from literature on the base of similar studies. The results are presented as pushover curves, crack distribution and failure modes. The results show that the safety level of the structure is acceptable at its current condition

Hemispheric functional segregation facilitates target detection during sustained visuospatial attention

Visuospatial attention is strongly lateralized, with the right hemisphere commonly exhibiting stronger activation and connectivity patterns than the left hemisphere during attentive processes. However, whether such asymmetry influences inter-hemispheric information transfer and behavioral performance is not known. Here we used a region of interest (ROI) and network-based approach to determine steady-state fMRI functional connectivity (FC) in the whole cerebral cortex during a leftward/rightward covert visuospatial attention task. We found that the global FC topology between either ROIs or networks was independent on the attended side. The side of attention significantly modulated FC strength between brain networks, with leftward attention primarily involving the connections of the right visual network with dorsal and ventral attention networks in both the left and right hemisphere. High hemispheric functional segregation significantly correlated with faster target detection response times (i.e., better performance). Our findings suggest that the dominance of the right hemisphere in visuospatial attention is associated with an hemispheric functional segregation that is beneficial for behavioral performance

Developing an effective and a integrity-centered management education system represents a priority. In fact, in an era of relentless change and increasing complexity, the importance of creating a fruitful context for the development of managerial education is increasingly being interpreted as crucial. Our contribution aims at analyzing the main trends and features that characterize the Italian management education system, interpreting them in the light of the prevailing theoretical dimensions debated in the international community and related to the concept of integrity and ethic. In our contribution, firstly, we go back to the concept of managerial work in order to grasp its relationship with management education: our analysis stems from the consideration that analysis of the content of the managerial tasks and its relationship with management education are, undoubtedly, one of the most interesting and debated issues in the organization studies literature. The second main section is focused on the analysis of the concept of management education practices between traditional and critical studies: by this way, we try to provide a wide perspective on the richness and heterogeneity of theoretical contributions that study the concept of management education. Finally, we sketch out the Italian situation, identifying the main peculiarities of management education initiatives. It emerges an interesting and articulated landscape where different typologies of initiatives cohabit , adopting different perspectives (ranging from international and global to extremely country-specific). We conclude underlying the risk that also in Italy we face to a sort of com-modification of knowledge. In fact, there is an attempt made by firms to acquire some sort of control over the system of professional knowledge, transforming knowledge into a specialist commodity characterized by a defined price

An anti-CD45RO/RB monoclonal antibody modulates T cell responses via induction of apoptosis and generation of regulatory T cells

The effects of a chimeric monoclonal antibody (chA6 mAb) that recognizes both the RO and RB isoforms of the transmembrane protein tyrosine phosphatase CD45 on human T cells were investigated. Chimeric A6 (chA6) mAb potently inhibited antigen-specific and polyclonal T cell responses. ChA6 mAb induced activation-independent apoptosis in CD4+CD45RO/RBhigh T cells but not in CD8+ T cells. In addition, CD4+ T cell lines specific for tetanus toxoid (TT) generated in the presence of chA6 mAb were anergic and suppressed the proliferation and interferon (IFN)-γ production by TT-specific effector T cells by an interleukin-10–dependent mechanism, indicating that these cells were equivalent to type 1 regulatory T cells. Similarly, CD8+ T cell lines specific for the influenza A matrix protein-derived peptide (MP.58-66) generated in the presence of chA6 mAb were anergic and suppressed IFN-γ production by MP.58-66–specific effector CD8+ T cells. Furthermore, chA6 mAb significantly prolonged human pancreatic islet allograft survival in nonobese diabetic/severe combined immunodeficiency mice injected with human peripheral blood lymphocytes (hu-PBL-NOD/SCID). Together, these results demonstrate that the chA6 mAb is a new immunomodulatory agent with multiple modes of action, including deletion of preexisting memory and recently activated T cells and induction of anergic CD4+ and CD8+ regulatory T cells

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to determine the efficacy and safety of triple therapy with a first-generation protease inhibitor (PI; boceprevir, telaprevir) plus peginterferon alfa-2a or -2b plus ribavirin, and dual therapy (peginterferon alfa-2a or -2b plus ribavirin) in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) in routine clinical practice. METHODS: PegBase was an international, prospective, observational study in which 4441 patients with CHC were enrolled in 27 countries. This analysis focuses on results in 4100 treatment-naïve and previously treated patients treated with PI-based triple therapy or dual therapy, according to the discretion of the investigator and local standards of practice. The primary efficacy outcome was sustained virological response after 12-week follow up (SVR12). RESULTS: SVR12 rates in treatment-naïve genotype (G) 1 patients were 56.6% and 62.9% for recipients of boceprevir plus peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin and boceprevir plus peginterferon alfa-2b/ribavirin, respectively, and 65.3% and 58.6% for recipients of telaprevir plus peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin and telaprevir plus peginterferon alfa-2b/ribavirin, respectively. In previously treated patients assigned to these four regimens, SVR12 rates were 43.6%, 48.3%, 60.3% and 56.1%, respectively. Among treatment-naïve patients assigned to peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin and peginterferon alfa-2b/ribavirin, respectively, SVR12 rates were 49.2% and 41.9% in G1 patients, 75.7% and 83.3% in G2 patients, 65.9% and 65.9% in G3 patients, and 49.7%, and 51.1% in G4 patients. The safety and tolerability of dual and triple therapy were consistent with previous reports. CONCLUSION: The efficacy and safety of first-generation PI-based triple-therapy and dual-therapy regimens in this real-world cohort were broadly comparable to those of previous studies.F. Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections with genotype 2 or 3 are associated with favourable sustained virologic response (SVR) rates. However, genotype 3 may respond less well. We reassessed all treatment-naive patients with genotype 2 and 3 participating in a large expanded-access, non-randomized, open-label trial, evaluating 180μg pegylated interferon (peg-IFN) alpha-2a (40kD) once weekly and 800 mg/day ribavirin for 24–48 weeks. Factors measured prior to initiation of antiviral therapy were considered in the multiple logistic regression model for predicting SVR. In total, 180 patients were analysed of which 72 (40%) were infected by genotype 2 and 108 (60%) genotype 3. The baseline characteristics between patients infected by genotype 2 or 3 were no different including the distribution of hepatic fibrosis stages by METAVIR score. Overall SVR was lower in those patients infected with genotype 3. The significant multivariate predictors of lack of SVR were hepatic fibrosis (P = 0.014) and genotype 3 (P = 0.030). The negative impact of cirrhosis (METAVIR score F4) on treatment response was more evident among subjects with genotype 3 than those with genotype 2 (P = 0.027). There is significant interaction between cirrhosis and genotype 3 leading to a poor antiviral response in such patients requiring an alternate management strategy. This finding should be confirmed in a larger population

Background:In the Italian Breast Cancer Intergroup Studies (IBIS) 3 phase III trial, we compared cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, 5-fluorouracil (CMF) alone to sequential epirubicin/CMF regimens in patients with rapidly proliferating early breast cancer (RPEBC). We performed a post hoc analysis in the subgroup of patients with hormone-receptor-positive RPEBC on the prognostic role of progesterone receptor (PgR) status. Methods:RPEBC was defined by thymidine labeling index (TLI) >3% or grade 3 or S-phase >10% or Ki67 >20%. We analyzed 466 patients with hormone-receptor-positive RPEBC receiving sequential epirubicin/CMF regimens followed by tamoxifen, and for whom the status of ER and PgR was available. Results:Considering both cut-off values of 10% and 20%, PgR expression was significantly associated with age, menopausal status, and ER expression; HER2 status was associated with PgR status only at a cutoff value of 20% PgR. Upon univariate analysis, tumor size, nodal status, and PgR were significantly associated with disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS), while age class and local treatment type were associated only with DFS. Patients with PgR 20%. Upon multivariate analysis, only tumor size, nodal status, and PgR were independent prognostic factors. Conclusions:Our results highlight the independent prognostic relevance of PgR expression in patients with hormone-receptor-positive RPEBC treated with adjuvant chemotherapy and endocrine therapy, where the definition of prognostic subgroups is still a major need
