    Stents are high tech endovascular implants. K&M Inc. is the single Eastern European stent producer company. The market needs more biocompatible devices as the trend of the stent development all the producers have to react. The other members of a R&D consortium is research institutions deals with diamond-like and drug-eluting coatings for decade. These biocompatible coatings can avoid the metallic stent surface to directly contact to the living tissues. This way a biologically active drug connected to the surface can be delivered directly to the diseased vessel wall. The Cardiovascular Institution has the clinical facility to test the new products. This group of applicants is obliged to develop, test and put on the market the new generation biocompatible coated stents

    The importance of ST elevation in V2–4 ECG leads in athletes

    Background Early repolarization in the anterior ECG leads (ERV2–4) is considered to be a sign of right ventricular (RV) remodeling, but its etiology and importance are unclear. Methods A total of 243 top-level endurance-trained athletes (ETA; 183 men and 60 women, weekly training hours: 15–20) and 120 leisure-time athletes (LTA; 71 men and 49 women, weekly training hours: 5–6) were investigated. The ERV2–4 sign was evaluated concerning type of sport, gender, transthoracic echocardiographic parameters, and ECG changes, which can indicate elevated RV systolic pressure [left atrium enlargement (LAE), right atrium enlargement (RAE), RV conduction defect (RVcd)]. Results Stroke volume and left ventricular mass were higher in ETAs vs. LTAs in both genders (p < 0.01). Prevalence of the ERV2–4 sign was significantly higher in men than in women [p = 0.000, odds ratio (OR) = 36.4] and in ETAs than in LTAs (p = 0.000). The highest ERV2–4 prevalence appeared in the most highly trained triathlonists and canoe and kayak paddlers (OR = 13.8 and 5.2, respectively). Within the ETA group, the post-exercise LAE, RAE, and RVcd changes developed more frequently in cases with than without ERV2–4 (LAE: men: p < 0.05, females: p < 0.005; RAE: men: p < 0.05, females: p < 0.005; RVcd: N.S.). These post-exercise appearing LAE, RAE, and RVcd are associated with the ERV2–4 sign (OR = 4.0, 3.7, and 3.8, respectively). Conclusions According to these results, ERV2–4 develops mainly in male ETAs due to long-lasting and repeated endurance training. The ERV2–4 sign indicates RV’s adaptation to maintain higher compensatory pulmonary pressure and flow during exercise but its danger regarding malignant arrhythmias is unclear

    In this work the syntheses of covalently grafted C-protected Fe(III)− or Ni(II)−L-cysteine and Fe(III)− or Ni(II)−L-cystine complexes onto a surface-modified silica gel or Merrifield’s resin are described. Conditions of the syntheses were varied and the obtained structures were studied by classical analytical (titration) as well as spectroscopic (infrared, atomic absorption) methods. It was found that the sulphur atoms in the molecules acted as primary coordination sites, while the other coordinating groups varied depending on whether the complexes were formed under ligand-poor or ligand-excess conditions

    Positron and positronium annihilation patterns in zeolites and bulk ceramics

    Positron lifetime (LT) measurements have revealed that in porous media the annihilation pattern is probably dominated by a near-saturation level trapping both for the positron and the positronium as well, which masks the contribution from the ldquofree annihilationrdquo, i.e., annihilation from delocalised positrons. In this work we compare positron lifetime spectra of crystalline zeolites with bulk ceramic materials fabricated by sintering from the same constituents as the zeolites and analyse common features and differences between them. For the dense ceramic samples the contribution from long-living components to the annihilation pattern is substantially lower than that for the zeolites. The results are analysed with the aim to extract new knowledge for the zeolites and for the sensitivity limits for free volume studies in ceramics. (© 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

    All-Optical Steering Of Laser-Wakefield-Accelerated Electron Beams

    We investigate the influence of a tilted laser-pulse-intensity front on laser-wakefield acceleration. Such asymmetric light pulses may be exploited to obtain control over the electron-bunch-pointing direction and in our case allowed for reproducible electron-beam steering in an all-optical way within an 8 mrad opening window with respect to the initial laser axis. We also discovered evidence of collective electron-betatron oscillations due to odd-axis electron injection into the wakefield induced by a pulse-front tilt. These findings are supported by 3D particle-in-cell simulations

    Generation of Stable, Low-Divergence Electron Beams by Laser-Wakefield Acceleration in a Steady-State-Flow Gas Cell

    Laser-driven, quasimonoenergetic electron beams of up to ~200 MeV in energy have been observed from steady-state-flow fas cells. These beams emitted within a low-divergence cone of 2.1 ± 0.5 mrad FWHM display unprecedented shot-to-shot stability in energy (2.5% rms), pointing (1.4 mrad rms), and charge (16% rms) owing to a highly reproducible gas-density profile within the interaction volume. Laser-wakefield acceleration in gas cells of this type provides a simple and reliable source of relativistic electrons suitable for applications such as the production of extreme-ultraviolet undulator radiation

    Local characteristics of the standing genetic diversity of European beech with high within-region differentiation at the eastern part of the range

    Developing "climate smart forestry" (CSF) indicators in mountain forest regions requires collection and evaluation of local data and their attributes. Genetic resources are listed among the core indicators for forest biological diversity. This study is a report on the evaluation of the standing genetic diversity within and across 12 pure beech stands (Fagus sylvatica L.) established within the CLIMO (CLImate Smart Forestry in MOuntain Regions) project, using nuclear microsatellite markers. The sampling sites were set along the species' distribution range, including the Balkan region and extending towards the Iberian Peninsula. Cores or leaves from 20 to 23 old, mature trees per plot were sampled for DNA analysis. Genetic diversity indices were high across the range (H-E = 0.74-0.81) with the highest in the Bosnian Mountains. Genetic divergence increased significantly with the geographical distance (Mantel test: r = 0.81, p < 0.001). Most of the stands exhibited an excess of heterozygotes, with the highest value at the Hungarian site (H-O/H-E = 1.177), where beech persists close to the eastern xeric limit of the species' distribution. STRUCTURE revealed within-region differentiation in the Balkan Peninsula, where the Bulgarian stand was the most outstanding.     Free-Volume Studies in Polycaprolactone/Poly(propylene oxide) Urethane/Urea Membranes by Positron Lifetime Spectroscopy

    Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was used to study the free volume parameters in polypropylene oxide-based tri-isocyanate terminated prepolymer/polycaprolactone diol bi-soft urethane/urea membranes (PU/PCL) with PCL content from 5 up to 25 wt%. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy measurements carried out in the temperature range 298-324 K mirrored the phase separation of the various soft and hard segments present in the membranes. The size and amount of free volume holes determined by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy appear to be correlated with the CO 2 gas permeability through the membranes
