improving query performance using distributed computing

Data warehouses are used to store large amounts of data. This data is often used for On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) where short response times are essential for on-line decision support. One of the most important requirements of a data warehouse server is the query performance. The principal aspect from the user perspective is how quickly the server processes a given query: “the data warehouse must be fast”. The main focus of our research is finding adequate solutions to improve query response time of typical OLAP queries and improve scalability using a distributed computation environment that takes advantage of characteristics specific to the OLAP context. Our proposal provides very good performance and scalability even on huge data warehouses

Objective: The main goal of this study was the analysis of suicidal ideation/intent, depression and quality of life among firefighters, exploring relations between these variables. The intersections between suicidal ideation/intent, depression, quality of life and socio-demographic/professional variables were also explored. Methodology: A convenience sample of 121 firefighters (65 men and 56 women), aged between 18 and 62 years (M = 35.95), working in the Fire Departments of Aveiro, Canterbury, Aveiro and Ourém participated in this study. Besides the Torga Suicidal Ideation/Intent Scale (ETIIS), we also applied instruments to assess depressive symptomatology (IACLIDE) and quality of life (WHOQOL-Bref). Results: The results show the presence of suicidal ideation/intent in 21.5% of the respondents, with 23.1% presenting suicidal ideation and 6.6% suicidal intent. Regarding depressive symptoms, the sample didn’t present high scores in the IACLIDE and respondents reported a satisfactory quality of life. The suicidal ideation/intent is positively and significantly correlated with depression and negatively correlated with quality of life. Among the socio-demographic and professional variables that have a significant relationship with suicidal ideation/intent, job satisfaction and academic qualifications stand out. Discussion/Conclusion: The high prevalence of suicidal ideation in this study underscores the importance of identifying symptoms related to depression and suicidal ideation/intent and to develop strategies aiming at the prevention (and intervention) of suicide in this professional category, which can include promoting better quality of life in multiple dimensions. Sociodemographic / occupational variables associated with suicidal ideation/intent were also identified

Use of Co-occurrences for temporal expressions annotation

The annotation or extraction of temporal information from text documents is becoming increasingly important in many natural language processing applications such as text summarization, information retrieval, question answering, etc.. This paper presents an original method for easy recognition of temporal expressions in text documents. The method creates semantically classified temporal patterns, using word co-occurrences obtained from training corpora and a pre-defined seed keywords set, derived from the used language temporal references. A participation on a Portuguese named entity evaluation contest showed promising effectiveness and efficiency results. This approach can be adapted to recognize other type of expressions or languages, within other contexts, by defining the suitable word sets and training corpora.FC
