    Diversité agromorphologique et commercialisation du gombo (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) à Ouagadougou et ses environs

    Au Burkina Faso, on a observé récemment à Ouagadougou et ses environs une mobilisation de petits producteurs pour la culture du gombo destinée à la population urbaine. La présente étude entreprise sur la base d’enquêtes réalisées dans quatre localités environnant la ville de Ouagadougou et dans onze de ses marchés a permis de comprendre que la filière de production et de commercialisation du gombo frais procure des revenus substantiels (4846 FCFA/planche/producteur et 2241 FCFA/jour/vendeur) aux différents acteurs malgré la précarité et l’absence d’une bonne organisation du circuit de commercialisation. Les maraîchers deOuagadougou et de ses environs cultivent quatre variétés de gombo dont deux sont des variétés locales. Mais seule la variété hybride "Indiana" est beaucoup prisée par les acteurs grâce à sa précocité et à son bonrendement. Par ailleurs, les variétés locales sont également beaucoup appréciées pour leur forte teneur en mucilage, leur faible teneur en graines et pour leur saveur mais tendent à être délaissées pour leur cycle tardif et leur faible rendement. On note une forte demande des consommateurs pour l'amélioration des variétés traditionnelles et la disponibilité des fruits frais toute l’année. De même, sa mise en marché nécessite une réflexion sur son positionnement par rapport aux variétés traditionnelles, le conditionnement, les circuits de distribution et la promotion de la filière

    Evidence of heterosis in Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) landraces from Burkina Faso

    In our study, 24 hybrids obtained by diallel cross between ecotypes of okra were subjected to analysis of their combining ability effects and hybrid vigor for different important traits for producers and consumers. Parents and hybrids differed significantly for gca effect. UAE 3 and UAE 20 were found to be the best general combiners for 50% day of flowering and number of fruits per plant. While UAE 25, UAE 3 and UAE 5 were best for seeds weight per fruit and yield per plant; between tester lines, UAE 19 shown good gca effect of number of seeds per fruit and fruit yield per plant, when UAE 22 is good for number of seeds per fruit. The most heterotic combinations for number of fruits per plant were those including UAE 22 in their combination.The same hybrids have shown medium heterobeltiosis effect for fruit  length and in some of them (H22-20 and H22-5) was observed highest heterobeltiosis of yield per plant, varied from 59.90 to 77.57 respectively. The highest depression (non heterobeltiosis) was observed in hybrids with combination including H19 for number of seeds per fruit. Overall, the results discussed above indicated the fact that okra hybrid with UAE 22 hasgreat potentialities of maximizing fruit yield while hybrid H3-19 and H22-3 have the smallest days of flowering. Similarly, the heterosis effect  appeared in F1 in these hybrids with UAE22 as a mother form keeps up to the third generation. Key words: hybrid vigor, combining ability, okra, Burkina Faso

    An infrared spectroscopy method to detect ammonia in gastric juice

    partially_open6Ammonia in gastric juice is considered a potential biomarker for Helicobacter pylori infection and as a factor contributing to gastric mucosal injury. High ammonia concentrations are also found in patients with chronic renal failure, peptic ulcer disease, and chronic gastritis. Rapid and specific methods for ammonia detection are urgently required by the medical community. Here we present a method to detect ammonia directly in gastric juice based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The ammonia dissolved in biological liquid samples as ammonium ion was released in air as a gas by the shifting of the pH equilibrium of the ammonium/ammonia reaction and was detected in line by a Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy system equipped with a gas cell for the quantification. The method developed provided high sensitivity and selectivity in ammonia detection both in pure standard solutions and in a simulated gastric juice matrix over the range of diagnostic concentrations tested. Preliminary analyses were also performed on real gastric juice samples from patients with gastric mucosal injury and with symptoms of H. pylori infection, and the results were in agreement with the clinicopathology information. The whole analysis, performed in less than 10 min, can be directly applied on the sample without extraction procedures and it ensures high specificity of detection because of the ammonia fingerprint absorption bands in the infrared spectrum.     Mise en œuvre de façon 'synergique' des mécanismes d'accès et de partage des avantages dans le cadre du Traité sur les ressources phytogénétiques, de la Convention sur la diversité biologique et du Protocole de Nagoya

    Le Traité international sur les ressources phytogénétiques pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture (TIRPAA) et la Convention sur la diversité biologique (CDB) engagent leurs Etats-membres à mettre en œuvre des systèmes d'accès et de partage des avantages très différents : d’un côté, le système établi en vertu du TIRPAA vise à renforcer la mise en commun et le partage au niveau international de la diversité génétique ; de l’autre côté, le système de la CDB a pour objectif de maximiser le contrôle souverain de chaque pays sur ses ressources génétiques. La mise en œuvre nationale de ces deux systèmes s'est révélée relativement lente. Ce retard est notamment dû au fait que dans de nombreux pays les décideurs nationaux ne savent pas vraiment comment gérer l'interface entre ces deux systèmes d'accès et de partage des avantages. Sur la base des recherches et des expériences en matière d’élaboration des politiques conduites dans plusieurs pays, les auteurs identifient en premier lieu les questions que les décideurs politiques nationaux doivent aborder et les étapes qu’ils doivent suivre pour la mise en œuvre du Système multilatéral d'accès et de partage des avantages du TIRPAA. En second lieu, les auteurs analysent les points d'intersection, au niveau national, entre le Système multilatéral d'accès et de partage des avantages du TIRPAA et les mécanismes mis en place (ou qui sont actuellement élaborés) en application de la CDB et de son Protocole de Nagoya, récemment adopté. En troisième lieu, les auteurs analysent les facteurs qui contribuent dans de nombreux pays à un manque de coordination entre les institutions publiques nationales chargées de l’environnement et celles chargées de l’agriculture qui ont pour mandat de diriger la mise en œuvre nationale de ces accords internationaux

    The FANCM:p.Arg658* truncating variant is associated with risk of triple-negative breast cancer

    Breast cancer is a common disease partially caused by genetic risk factors. Germline pathogenic variants in DNA repair genes BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2, ATM, and CHEK2 are associated with breast cancer risk. FANCM, which encodes for a DNA translocase, has been proposed as a breast cancer predisposition gene, with greater effects for the ER-negative and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtypes. We tested the three recurrent protein-truncating variants FANCM:p.Arg658*, p.Gln1701*, and p.Arg1931* for association with breast cancer risk in 67,112 cases, 53,766 controls, and 26,662 carriers of pathogenic variants of BRCA1 or BRCA2. These three variants were also studied functionally by measuring survival and chromosome fragility in FANCM (-/-) patient-derived immortalized fibroblasts treated with diepoxybutane or olaparib. We observed that FANCM:p.Arg658* was associated with increased risk of ER-negative disease and TNBC (OR = 2.44, P = 0.034 and OR = 3.79; P = 0.009, respectively). In a country-restricted analysis, we confirmed the associations detected for FANCM:p.Arg658* and found that also FANCM:p.Arg1931* was associated with ER-negative breast cancer risk (OR = 1.96; P = 0.006). The functional results indicated that all three variants were deleterious affecting cell survival and chromosome stability with FANCM:p.Arg658* causing more severe phenotypes. In conclusion, we confirmed that the two rare FANCM deleterious variants p.Arg658* and p.Arg1931* are risk factors for ER-negative and TNBC subtypes. Overall our data suggest that the effect of truncating variants on breast cancer risk may depend on their position in the gene.     Clinical Significance of Myocardial Injury in Patients Hospitalized for COVID-19: A Prospective, Multicenter, Cohort Study

    \ua9 2024 The AuthorsBackground: Hospitalized COVID-19 patients with troponin elevation have a higher prevalence of cardiac abnormalities than control individuals. However, the progression and impact of myocardial injury on COVID-19 survivors remain unclear. Objectives: This study sought to evaluate myocardial injury in COVID-19 survivors with troponin elevation with baseline and follow-up imaging and to assess medium-term outcomes. Methods: This was a prospective, longitudinal cohort study in 25 United Kingdom centers (June 2020 to March 2021). Hospitalized COVID-19 patients with myocardial injury underwent cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) scans within 28 days and 6 months postdischarge. Outcomes were tracked for 12 months, with quality of life surveys (EuroQol-5 Dimension and 36-Item Short Form surveys) taken at discharge and 6 months. Results: Of 342 participants (median age: 61.3 years; 71.1% male) with baseline CMR, 338 had a 12-month follow-up, 235 had a 6-month CMR, and 215 has baseline and follow-up quality of life surveys. Of 338 participants, within 12 months, 1.2% died; 1.8% had new myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome, or coronary revascularization; 0.8% had new myopericarditis; and 3.3% had other cardiovascular events requiring hospitalization. At 6 months, there was a minor improvement in left ventricular ejection fraction (1.8% \ub1 1.0%; P < 0.001), stable right ventricular ejection fraction (0.4% \ub1 0.8%; P = 0.50), no change in myocardial scar pattern or volume (P = 0.26), and no imaging evidence of continued myocardial inflammation. All pericardial effusions (26 of 26) resolved, and most pneumonitis resolved (95 of 101). EuroQol-5 Dimension scores indicated an overall improvement in quality of life (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Myocardial injury in severe hospitalized COVID-19 survivors is nonprogressive.
