Soft masses in superstring models with anomalous U(1) symmetries
We analyze the general structure of soft scalar masses emerging in
superstring models involving anomalous U(1) symmetries, with the aim of
characterizing more systematically the circumstances under which they can
happen to be flavor universal. We consider both heterotic orbifold and
intersecting brane models, possibly with several anomalous and non-anomalous
spontaneously broken U(1) symmetries. The hidden sector is assumed to consist
of the universal dilaton, Kahler class and complex structure moduli, which are
supposed to break supersymmetry, and a minimal set of Higgs fields which
compensate the Fayet-Iliopoulos terms. We leave the superpotential that is
supposed to stabilize the hidden sector fields unspecified, but we carefully
take into account the relations implied by gauge invariance and the constraints
required for the existence of a metastable vacuum with vanishing cosmological
constant. The results are parametrized in terms of a constrained Goldstino
direction, suitably defined effective modular weights, and the U(1) charges and
shifts. We show that the effect induced by vector multiplets strongly depends
on the functional form of the Kahler potential for the Higgs fields. We find in
particular that whenever these are charged matter fields, like in heterotic
models, the effect is non-trivial, whereas when they are shifting moduli
fields, like in certain intersecting brane models, the effect may vanish.Comment: 35 pages, LaTe
Constraints for the existence of flat and stable non-supersymmetric vacua in supergravity
We further develop on the study of the conditions for the existence of
locally stable non-supersymmetric vacua with vanishing cosmological constant in
supergravity models involving only chiral superfields. Starting from the two
necessary conditions for flatness and stability derived in a previous paper
(which involve the Kahler metric and its Riemann tensor contracted with the
supersymmetry breaking auxiliary fields) we show that the implications of these
constraints can be worked out exactly not only for factorizable scalar
manifolds, but also for symmetric coset manifolds. In both cases, the
conditions imply a strong restriction on the Kahler geometry and constrain the
vector of auxiliary fields defining the Goldstino direction to lie in a certain
cone. We then apply these results to the various homogeneous coset manifolds
spanned by the moduli and untwisted matter fields arising in string
compactifications, and discuss their implications. Finally, we also discuss
what can be said for completely arbitrary scalar manifolds, and derive in this
more general case some explicit but weaker restrictions on the Kahler geometry.Comment: 22 pages, Latex, no figure
Minimal Stability in Maximal Supergravity
Recently, it has been shown that maximal supergravity allows for
non-supersymmetric AdS critical points that are perturbatively stable. We
investigate this phenomenon of stability without supersymmetry from the
sGoldstino point of view. In particular, we calculate the projection of the
mass matrix onto the sGoldstino directions, and derive the necessary conditions
for stability. Indeed we find a narrow window allowing for stable SUSY breaking
points. As a by-product of our analysis, we find that it seems impossible to
perturb supersymmetric critical points into non-supersymmetric ones: there is a
minimal amount of SUSY breaking in maximal supergravity.Comment: 27 pages, 1 figure. v2: two typos corrected, published versio
A New Method for Finding Vacua in String Phenomenology
One of the central problems of string-phenomenology is to find stable vacua
in the four dimensional effective theories which result from compactification.
We present an algorithmic method to find all of the vacua of any given
string-phenomenological system in a huge class. In particular, this paper
reviews and then extends hep-th/0606122 to include various non-perturbative
effects. These include gaugino condensation and instantonic contributions to
the superpotential.Comment: 27 pages, 5 .eps figures. V2: Minor corrections, reference adde
A geometric bound on F-term inflation
We discuss a general bound on the possibility to realise inflation in any
minimal supergravity with F-terms. The derivation crucially depends on the
sGoldstini, the scalar field directions that are singled out by spontaneous
supersymmetry breaking. The resulting bound involves both slow-roll parameters
and the geometry of the K\"ahler manifold of the chiral scalars. We analyse the
inflationary implications of this bound, and in particular discuss to what
extent the requirements of single field and slow-roll can both be met in F-term
inflation.Comment: 14 pages, improved analysis, references added, matches published

Moduli stabilization with Fayet-Iliopoulos uplift
In the recent years, phenomenological models of moduli stabilization were
proposed, where the dynamics of the stabilization is essentially
supersymmetric, whereas an O'Rafearthaigh supersymmetry breaking sector is
responsible for the "uplift" of the cosmological constant to zero. We
investigate the case where the uplift is provided by a Fayet-Iliopoulos sector.
We find that in this case the modulus contribution to supersymmetry breaking is
larger than in the previous models. A first consequence of this class of
constructions is for gauginos, which are heavier compared to previous models.
In some of our explicit examples, due to a non-standard gauge-mediation type
negative contribution to scalars masses, the whole superpartner spectrum can be
efficiently compressed at low-energy. This provides an original phenomenology
testable at the LHC, in particular sleptons are generically heavier than the
squarks.Comment: 29 pages, 2 figure
An Effective Description of the Landscape - II
We continue our analysis of establishing the reliability of "simple"
effective theories where massive fields are "frozen" rather than integrated
out, in a wide class of four dimensional theories with global or local N=1
supersymmetry. We extend our previous work by adding gauge fields and O(1)
Yukawa-like terms for the charged fields in the superpotential. For generic
Kaehler potentials, a meaningful freezing is allowed for chiral multiplets
only, whereas in general heavy vector fields have to properly be integrated
out. Heavy chiral fields can be frozen if they approximately sit to
supersymmetric solutions along their directions and, in supergravity, if the
superpotential at the minimum is small, so that a mass hierarchy between heavy
and light fields is ensured. When the above conditions are met, we show that
the simple effective theory is generally a reliable truncation of the full one.Comment: 20 page
Prospects for Mirage Mediation
Mirage mediation reduces the fine-tuning in the minimal supersymmetric
standard model by dynamically arranging a cancellation between anomaly-mediated
and modulus-mediated supersymmetry breaking. We explore the conditions under
which a mirage "messenger scale" is generated near the weak scale and the
little hierarchy problem is solved. We do this by explicitly including the
dynamics of the SUSY-breaking sector needed to cancel the cosmological
constant. The most plausible scenario for generating a low mirage scale does
not readily admit an extra-dimensional interpretation. We also review the
possibilities for solving the mu/Bmu problem in such theories, a potential
hidden source of fine-tuning.Comment: 14 page
Moduli stabilization with positive vacuum energy
We study the effect of anomalous U(1) gauge groups in string theory
compactification with fluxes. We find that, in a gauge invariant formulation,
consistent AdS vacua appear breaking spontaneously supergravity. Non vanishing
D-terms from the anomalous symmetry act as an uplifting potential and could
allow for de Sitter vacua. However, we show that in this case the gravitino is
generically (but not always) much heavier than the electroweak scale. We show
that alternative uplifting scheme based on corrections to the Kahler potential
can be compatible with a gravitino mass in the TeV range.Comment: 20 pages, 1 figur
