Consistency of Age Reporting By Cause of Death Among Elderly African-American Decedents
Because age is associated with many biological and social phenomena, accurate age data are critical for researchers exploring the societal impact of population aging and for policy makers deciding how to best allocate resources to this burgeoning group. Of particular importance is the quality of age data for the rapidly expanding elderly population. Past research has shown the quality of these data to be questionable for the U.S. elderly population, particularly for African-Americans (Hambright 1969; Kestenbaum 1992; National Center for Health Statistics [NC HS] 1968; Rosenwaike 1979; Rosenwaike and Logue 1983). A recent study comparing 1987 death certificates from Massachusetts and Texas with matched Social Security/Medicare files, for example, found exact age agreement in the two data sources for 94.6% of non-Hispanic whites aged 65 and over but only for 72. 6% of African Americans (Kestenbaum 1992: Table 4). Age agreement deteriorated more rapidly with advancing age among blacks than among whites; for those aged 85 and over, exact age agreement was found for 91.7% of non-Hispanic whites compared with only 63.2% of African Americans
Teachersâ perceptions of autonomy in the tensions between a subject focus and a cross-curricular school profile: A case study of a Finnish upper secondary school
Recent research has indicated global trends of decreasing teacher autonomy and
increasing teacher accountability. Standardised national tests have been identifed
as one of many factors constraining teacher autonomy. Another trend infuencing
teachersâ scope of action is the profling and branding of schools that compete for
students. This qualitative case study concerns the general upper secondary level in
Finland, the only level of education in the country with a high-stakes fnal examinationâthe matriculation exam. The upper secondary level is generally regarded as
Finlandâs most subject-focused level of education. In contrast to this subject-focused
tradition, the case school for this research has developed a cross-curricular profle
emphasising creativity, boundary crossing and an outward orientated approach.
The study explores the teachersâ perceptions of how their autonomy is constrained
in this context characterised by tensions between the cross-curricular school profle on one hand, and the subject-focused tradition and student evaluations on the
other. Although one might expect these tensions to constrain teacher autonomy, the
results show that the teachers, in fact, experience the cross-curricular school profle
as increasing their individual autonomy. The study demonstrates that upper secondary teachers can experience extensive autonomy despite global trends of increasing
teacher accountability and diminishing teacher autonomy.publishedVersio

Intralake heterogeneity of thermal responses to climate change: a study of large northern hemisphere lakes
Lake surface water temperature (LSWT) measurements from various sources illustrate that lakes are warming in response to climate change. Most previous studies of geographical distributions of lake warming have tended to utilize data with limited spatial resolution of LSWTs, including single-point time series. Spatially resolved LSWT time-series are now available from satellite observations and some studies have investigated previously the intra-lake warming patterns in specific lakes (e.g., North American Great Lakes). However, across-lake comparisons of intra-lake warming differences have not yet been investigated at a large, across-continental scale, thus limiting our understanding of how intra-lake warming patterns differ more broadly. In this study, we analyze up to 20 years of satellite data from 19 lakes situated across the Northern Hemisphere, to investigate how LSWT changes vary across different lake surfaces. We find considerable intra-lake variability in warming trends across many lakes. The deepest areas of large lakes are characterized by a later onset of thermal stratification, a shorter stratified warming season and exhibit longer correlation timescales of LSWT anomalies. We show that deep areas of large lakes across the Northern Hemisphere as a result tend to display higher rates of warming of summer LSWT, arising from a greater temporal persistence in deep areas of the temperature anomalies associated with an earlier onset of thermal stratification. Utilization of single-point LSWT trends to represent changes in large lakes therefore suppresses important aspects of lake responses to climate change, whereas spatially resolved LSWT measurements can be exploited to provide more comprehensive understanding
Neptunium(V) transport in granitic rock : A laboratory scale study on the influence of bentonite colloids
In the present study neptunium(V) uptake by crystalline granitic rock (Kuru Grey granite) and the role of stable and mobile bentonite colloids (MX-80) on the migration of neptunium(V) was investigated. Two different experimental setups were utilized, batch-type experiments under stagnant conditions and column experiments under flowing water conditions. The uptake of 10(-6) M neptunium(V) by 40 g/L crushed granite in 10 mM NaClO4 was found to be pH-dependent, whereas neptunium(V) uptake by MX-80 bentonite colloids (0.08-0.8 g/L) was pH-independent up to a pH-value of approximately 11. Column experiments were conducted in the presence and absence of colloids at two pH values (pH = 8 and 10) and two flow rates (0.3 and 0.8 mL/h) in 10 mM NaClO4. The injected neptunium(V) concentration was 2x10(-4) M and the colloid concentration ranged from 0.08 to 0.32 g/L. The properties of the flow field in the columns were investigated with a conservative chloride tracer, at the same two flow rates of 0.8 and 0.3 mL/h. The resulting breakthrough curves were modeled using the analytical solution of advection-matrix diffusion equation. A tailing of neptunium(V) breakthrough curves in comparison to the conservative tracer was observed, which could be explained by a slightly higher retardation of neptunium(V) in the column caused by sorption on the granite. The sorption was in general lower at pH 8 than at pH 10. In addition, the tailing was almost identical in the absence and presence of MX-80 bentonite colloids, implying that the influence of colloids on the neptunium(V) mobility is almost negligible.Peer reviewe
Lateralization of face processing in the human brain
Are visual face processing mechanisms the same in the left and right cerebral hemispheres? The possibility of such âduplicated processingâ seems puzzling in terms of neural resource usage, and we currently lack a precise characterization of the lateral differences in face processing. To address this need, we have undertaken a three-pronged approach. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we assessed cortical sensitivity to facial semblance, the modulatory effects of context and temporal response dynamics. Results on all three fronts revealed systematic hemispheric differences. We found that: (i) activation patterns in the left fusiform gyrus correlate with image-level face-semblance, while those in the right correlate with categorical face/non-face judgements. (ii) Context exerts significant excitatory/inhibitory influence in the left, but has limited effect on the right. (iii) Face-selectivity persists in the right even after activity on the left has returned to baseline. These results provide important clues regarding the functional architecture of face processing, suggesting that the left hemisphere is involved in processing âlow-levelâ face semblance, and perhaps is a precursor to categorical âdeepâ analyses on the right.John Merck FundSimons FoundationJames S. Comparative Efficacy of Video and Text Instructional Modalities for an Oral Surgery Technique among Dental Students
Purpose: To gauge the efficacy of video media in pre-doctoral oral and maxillofacial surgery education and compare it to traditional text-based learning materials.
Methods: Twenty novice dental students were randomly divided into two groups to place an Erich arch bar to the maxillary dentition of a dentoform. Group A was given a 10 minute video instruction while Group B was given 10 minutes to review written text instruction. All participants were given 45 minutes to place the arch bar on a dentoform while being recorded. This session concluded with a survey of student perceptions using the SEEQ. The students then alternated instructional modalities and again evaluated using the SEEQ. Two double-blinded clinical OMS faculty evaluated the recordings in accordance with the standards detailed in the ABPAS.
Results: The difference in the post-instructional skill scores of Group A and Group B students was deemed not significant (p = 0.46). Overall, the students expressed significant preference for the video modality compared to the textual modality. The difference of the scores in each preference category between the video and text modalities were all found to be significant with p-values well below 0.05.
Conclusion: Educators must remain cognizant towards the benefits of new technology and continue to explore newer, potentially more efficacious modalities such as interactive teaching materials. These benefits may be utilized to help increase student engagement and increase long-term retention of the material. It is imperative to understand the limits of each method and balance them strategically to offer comprehensive healthcare training

A Match in Time Saves Nine: Deterministic Online Matching With Delays
We consider the problem of online Min-cost Perfect Matching with Delays
(MPMD) introduced by Emek et al. (STOC 2016). In this problem, an even number
of requests appear in a metric space at different times and the goal of an
online algorithm is to match them in pairs. In contrast to traditional online
matching problems, in MPMD all requests appear online and an algorithm can
match any pair of requests, but such decision may be delayed (e.g., to find a
better match). The cost is the sum of matching distances and the introduced
delays.
We present the first deterministic online algorithm for this problem. Its
competitive ratio is , where is the
number of requests. This is polynomial in the number of metric space points if
all requests are given at different points. In particular, the bound does not
depend on other parameters of the metric, such as its aspect ratio. Unlike
previous (randomized) solutions for the MPMD problem, our algorithm does not
need to know the metric space in advance
Titmice are a better indicator of bird density in Northern European than in Western European forests

The possibility to derive indicators from the tendency of specific species to co-occur with others has been overlooked. Here, we tested whether the abundance of resident titmice can act as a general ecological indicator of forest bird density in European forests. Titmice species are easily identifiable and have a wide distribution, which makes them potentially useful ecological indicators. Migratory birds often use information on the density of resident birds, such as titmice, as a cue for habitat selection. Thus, the density of residents may potentially affect community dynamics. We examined spatio-temporal variation in titmouse abundance and total bird abundance, each measured as biomass, by using long-term citizen science data on breeding forest birds in Finland and France. We analyzed the variation in observed forest bird density (excluding titmice) in relation to titmouse abundance. In Finland, forest bird density linearly increased with titmouse abundance. In France, forest bird density nonlinearly increased with titmouse abundance, the association weakening toward high titmouse abundance. We then analyzed whether the abundance (measured as biomass) of random species sets could predict forest bird density better than titmouse abundance. Random species sets outperformed titmice as an indicator of forest bird density only in 4.4% and 24.2% of the random draws, in Finland and France, respectively. Overall, the results suggest that titmice could act as an indicator of bird density in Northern European forest bird communities, encouraging the use of titmice observations by even less-experienced observers in citizen science monitoring of general forest bird density.Peer reviewe
