    In the United States, governmental regulations mandate the improvement of farming practices to improve environmental quality. There is a requirement to reduce the siltation of waterways, soil carbon losses, and nutrient runoff along the Mississippi River Delta. The use of small-grain forages by grazing cattle offers real opportunities to produce high-quality forage for cattle production during the winter and spring months. No-till and reduced tillage practices developed primarily for grain production may offer environmental and economic solutions for both grain farmers and cattle producers. Producers are slow to adopt conservation tillage practices because of a perceived risk of reduced production.     Antibacterial properties of tualang honey and its effect in burn wound management: a comparative study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The use of honey as a natural product of <it>Apis </it>spp. for burn treatment has been widely applied for centuries. Tualang honey has been reported to have antibacterial properties against various microorganisms, including those from burn-related diagnoses, and is cheaper and easier to be absorbed by Aquacel dressing. The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential antibacterial properties of tualang honey dressing and to determine its effectiveness as a partial thickness burn wound dressing.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In order to quantitate the bioburden of the swabs, pour plates were performed to obtain the colony count (CFU/ml). Swabs obtained from burn wounds were streaked on blood agar and MacConkey agar for bacterial isolation and identification. Later, antibacterial activity of Aquacel-tualang honey, Aquacel-Manuka honey, Aquacel-Ag and Aquacel- plain dressings against bacteria isolated from patients were tested (<it>in-vitro</it>) to see the effectiveness of those dressings by zone of inhibition assays.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Seven organisms were isolated. Four types of Gram-negative bacteria, namely <it>Enterobacter cloacae</it>, <it>Klebsiella pneumoniae</it>, <it>Pseudomonas </it>spp. and <it>Acinetobacter </it>spp., and three Gram-positive bacteria, namely <it>Staphylococcus aureus</it>, coagulase-negative <it>Staphylococcus aureus </it>(CONS) and <it>Streptococcus </it>spp., were isolated. Total bacterial count decreased on day 6 and onwards. In the <it>in-vitro </it>antibacterial study, Aquacel-Ag and Aquacel-Manuka honey dressings gave better zone of inhibition for Gram positive bacteria compared to Aquacel-Tualang honey dressing. However, comparable results were obtained against Gram negative bacteria tested with Aquacel-Manuka honey and Aquacel-Tualang honey dressing.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Tualang honey has a bactericidal as well as bacteriostatic effect. It is useful as a dressing, as it is easier to apply and is less sticky compared to Manuka honey. However, for Gram positive bacteria, tualang honey is not as effective as usual care products such as silver-based dressing or medical grade honey dressing.</p

    Medical-grade honey enriched with antimicrobial peptides has enhanced activity against antibiotic-resistant pathogens

    Honey has potent activity against both antibiotic-sensitive and -resistant bacteria, and is an interesting agent for topical antimicrobial application to wounds. As honey is diluted by wound exudate, rapid bactericidal activity up to high dilution is a prerequisite for its successful application. We investigated the kinetics of the killing of antibiotic-resistant bacteria by RS honey, the source for the production of Revamil® medical-grade honey, and we aimed to enhance the rapid bactericidal activity of RS honey by enrichment with its endogenous compounds or the addition of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). RS honey killed antibiotic-resistant isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecium, and Burkholderia cepacia within 2 h, but lacked such rapid activity against methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli. It was not feasible to enhance the rapid activity of RS honey by enrichment with endogenous compounds, but RS honey enriched with 75 μM of the synthetic peptide Bactericidal Peptide 2 (BP2) showed rapid bactericidal activity against all species tested, including MRSA and ESBL E. coli, at up to 10–20-fold dilution. RS honey enriched with BP2 rapidly killed all bacteria tested and had a broader spectrum of bactericidal activity than either BP2 or honey alone

    [CrIII8MII6]12+ Coordination Cubes (MII=Cu, Co)

    Four [CrIII8MII6]n+ (MII = Cu, Co) coordination cubes of formulae [Cr8Co6L24Cl12] (1), [Cr8Co6L24(SCN)12] (2), [Cr8Cu6L24(H2O)12](SO4)6 (3), and [Cr8Cu6L24Cl12] (4) (where HL is 1-(4-pyridyl)butane-1,3-dione), were synthesised using the [CrIIIL3] metalloligand in combination with a variety of MII salts. The metallic skeleton of each cage describes a cube in which the [CrIIIL3] moieties occupy the eight vertices and the MII ions lie at the centre of the six faces. The axial coordination sites of the MII cations are occupied by either H2O molecules or Cl?/SCN? anions originating from the MII salt used in the synthesis, resulting in neutral 1, 2 and 4 and the cage in 3 being a 12+ cation; the charge-balancing SO42? anions accommodated both inside and outside the cube. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation measurements reveal weak exchange between nearest neighbour metal ions, mediated via the L? ligands. The modular assembly of the cubes suggests that any combination of [MIIIL3] metalloligand and MII salt will work, potentially resulting in an enormous family of supramolecular assemblies. The charge of the cubes is controlled by the nature of the ligand occupying the axial sites on the MII ions, suggesting trivial ligand exchange may offer control over, amongst others, solubility, reactivity, post-synthetic modification and substrate specificity. The large internal cavities of the cubes also suggest host–guest chemistry may be a fruiful route to encapsulating magnetic and/or redox active guests which could be employed to control magnetic behaviour, and the construction of multifunctional materials
