Century-Travelling, Gender-Bending Artists: : A Comparison of the Artists in Woolf's Orlando and Smith's How to Be Both

This essay primarily looks at the relationship between gender and art through history, by comparing the two main characters of Virginia Woolf's Orlando (1928) and Ali Smith's How to Be Both (2014), and their shared qualities of being gender-bending, century-travelling artists. The theoretical background to this comparison is Angeliki Spiropoulou's (2010) theory on the shared opinion of Walter Benjamin and Virginia Woolf, on how art history is a constructed narrative, which, as Woolf has illustrated by her use of Orlando in Orlando, has favoured male artists over women artists and their work. My analysis of Woolf’s Orlando, and the subsequent analysis of the artist Fransescho del Cossa's role in How to Be Both shows that Smith's similar use of century-travelling and gender-bending in her character reinforces Woolf's point that artistry has been unfairly gendered throughout history, and that this has slowly changed towards a larger acceptance of women artists. Furthermore, How to Be Both especially highlights the importance of understanding historical accounts as constructed narratives, by making the reader question who the narrator behind Fransescho's story is. Each novel also shows the importance which clothes have in marking a person's gender, and therefore the characters are directly affected in their artistry depending on the clothes they wear. Moreover, this essay shows that both novels have a similar perspective on the creativity process, with both of their characters detaching themselves from their own gender identity when creating art through painting and writing

Additional Treatment with Terracortril® with Polymyxin B when Treating Pericoronitis in General Dental Care

Background: Pericoronitis is an oral condition characterized by inflammation caused by infection in the gingiva surrounding a partially erupted tooth. Terracortril® with Polymyxin B is an ointment with hydrocortisone, oxytetracycline and Polymyxin B that has been observed to occur in treatment of pericoronitis in general dental care, despite recommendations against local antibiotic treatment in dental care. Aim: The aim was to explore to what extent Terracortril® with Polymyxin B is used in the treatment of pericoronitis in general dental care, and to ascertain if the general dentist’s professional experience and degree of difficulty of the pericoronitis affects the choice of treatment. Methods: A survey was sent to general dentists in the Region Västerbotten, consisting of three patient cases with different severity of pericoronitis asking for acute stage treatment. Background questions about Terracortril® with Polymyxin B were included and working years were inquired for.   Results: 81.4% used Terracortril® with Polymyxin B. Usage was associated with professional experience, where dentists with 0-1 and ≥16 working years used Terracortril® with Polymyxin B more frequently than dentists with 2-5 and 6-15 working years.  The severity of symptoms of pericoronitis was decisive for if the dentist used Terracortril® with Polymyxin B, where usage increased with the severity of pericoronitis. Conclusion: Terracortril® with Polymyxin B is frequently used in treatment of pericoronitis. Both the professional experience and the degree of difficulty of the pericoronitis affect the usage. Terracortril® with Polymyxin B should presumably not be used in the treatment of pericoronitis until supporting evidence is available.

Mamma, mamma, barn : En kritisk granskning av mediernas rapportering om homosexuella föräldrar

Homosexuellas rättigheter i samhället är ett omdebatterat ämne och en viktig rättighetsfråga av relevans för socialt arbete. Denna studie syftar till att genom narrativ analys undersöka hur svenska textmedier rapporterar om homosexuella föräldrar. Studien bygger på artiklar rörande homosexuella föräldrar i svensk dagspress. Frågorna som studien fokuserar på är; Hur ser mediernas framställning av homosexuella föräldrar ut? Vilka ges möjlighet att uttala sig i rapporteringen vi studerat? Hur upplever homosexuella föräldrar, i mediernas rapportering, kontakten med människovårdande yrken? I studien framträder bland annat tre olika aktörer, som ges möjlighet att uttrycka sig i medierna när det rör homosexuella föräldrar, där den politiska och religiösa debatten är den som får störst utrymme

Fjollor och flator: var är de i reklamen?

Minoritetsgrupper som exempelvis homosexuella får allt större utrymme i dagens massmedier. Uttalat homosexuella personer förekommer i såväl TV som tidningar och filmer och har blivit en självklar om än omdiskuterad del av medieflödet. Med detta som utgångspunkt syftar den här uppsatsen till att genom en kvalitativ näranalys utröna huruvida homosexualitet även kommer till uttryck i reklam. Vi valde att studera och jämföra reklambilder ur två av Sveriges största månadstidningar med heterosexuell målgrupp. Efter att ha studerat och analyserat vårt material drog vi slutsatsen att homosexualitet sällan eller aldrig uttrycks i reklam i tidningar med heterosexuell läsekrets. Den typ av sexualitet som bilderna ger uttryck för är mer en gestaltning och ett återskapande av de traditionella könsrollerna än en avspegling av hur dagens samhälle de facto ser ut.
