Tratamento de fratura exposta com alto grau de laceração e perda óssea de membro torácico em um cão
Fraturas expostas apresentam comunicação com o meio externo por meio de lesão de partes moles. A depender do grau, o tratamento pode ser desafiador e perdurar por longo período até a total cicatrização. Objetivou-se relatar a eficiência da técnica de osteossíntese de ulna e enxertia cutânea em um canino com alto grau de laceração em membro torácico. Foi atendido um cão, de quatro meses de idade, com queixa de atropelamento e ferida extensa em membro torácico esquerdo. Ao exame físico, o membro torácico esquerdo apresentava fratura exposta com alto grau de perda óssea em região de rádio e ulna, associado a extensa laceração cutânea e no membro torácico direito notou-se desvio de eixo ósseo em região de rádio-ulna. Na radiografia, constatou-se perda da porção diafisária do rádio esquerdo e fratura segmentar em ulna esquerda, além de fratura fechada, simples completa e transversa em terço proximal de rádio-ulna direita. Optou-se pela imobilização do membro torácico direito e curativo com trocas de bandagem no lado esquerdo. Após três dias, foi realizada osteossíntese de ulna do membro torácico esquerdo utilizando fixador externo linear unilateral associado a pinos de Schanz ancorados na ulna e nas porções remanescentes do rádio, carpo e metacarpo. Com tecido de granulação presente após 25 dias, foi realizado enxertia cutânea. O animal apresentou cicatrização completa da ferida e apoio do membro em aproximadamente três meses. A utilização de fixação externa linear associada a enxertia de pele mostrou-se satisfatória para o tratamento, contribuindo para o salvamento do membro no presente caso
Synthesis and biological evaluation of novel imidazolidine derivatives as candidates to schistosomicidal agents
Introduction: Schistosomiasis is an infectious parasitic disease caused by trematodes of the genus Schistosoma, which threatens at least 258 million people worldwide and its control is dependent on a single drug, praziquantel. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-Schistosoma mansoni activity in vitro of novel imidazolidine derivatives. Material and methods: We synthesized two novel imidazolidine derivatives: (LPSF/PTS10) (Z)-1-(2-chloro-6-fluorobenzyl)-4-(4-dimethylaminobenzylidene)-5-thioxoimidazolidin-2-one and (LPSF/PTS23) (Z)-1-(2-chloro-6-fluoro-benzyl)-5-thioxo-4-(2,4,6-trimethoxy-benzylidene)-imidazolidin-2-one. The structures of two compounds were determined by spectroscopic methods. During the biological assays, parameters such as motility, oviposition, mortality and analysis by Scanning Electron Microscopy were performed. Results: LPSF/PTS10 and LPSF/PTS23 were considered to be active in the separation of coupled pairs, mortality and to decrease the motor activity. In addition, LPSF/PTS23 induced ultrastructural alterations in worms, after 24 h of contact, causing extensive erosion over the entire body of the worms. Conclusion: The imidazolidine derivatives containing the trimetoxy and benzylidene halogens showed promising in vitro schistosomicidal activity
Manejo de lesões cutâneas pré-cancerígenas: Atualizações e Diretrizes Dermatológicas
Objective: The article aims to address the management of pre-cancerous skin lesions, providing a comprehensive review of current dermatological updates and guidelines. Introduction: Focusing on clinical aspects, physiological, genetic, and environmental factors, the aim is to offer a holistic view of these lesions. Methodology: An integrative review is included, highlighting inclusion and exclusion criteria, intending to contribute to a thorough understanding and guide informed clinical practices. Results: The integrative and comprehensive approach in managing pre-cancerous skin lesions, supported by dermatological updates, promotes crucial advancements to optimize clinical practices and the quality of dermatological care. Conclusion: In summary, the centered and collaborative approach, supported by the importance of updated guidelines in managing pre-cancerous skin lesions, enhances the prevention and treatment of these dermatological conditions.Objetivo: O artigo visa abordar o manejo de lesões cutâneas pré-cancerígenas, proporcionando uma revisão abrangente das atuais atualizações e diretrizes dermatológicas. Introdução: Com foco em aspectos clínicos, fatores fisiológicos, genéticos e ambientais, o objetivo é oferecer uma visão holística dessas lesões. Metodologia: Inclui-se uma revisão integrativa, destacando critérios de inclusão e exclusão, com a intenção de contribuir para uma compreensão aprofundada e direcionar práticas clínicas informadas. Resultados: A abordagem integrativa e abrangente no manejo de lesões cutâneas pré-cancerígenas, respaldada por atualizações dermatológicas, promove avanços cruciais para otimizar práticas clínicas e a qualidade dos cuidados dermatológicos. Conclusão: Em síntese, a abordagem centrada e colaborativa respaldada pela a importância de diretrizes atualizadas no manejo de lesões cutâneas pré-cancerígenas, aprimora a prevenção e tratamento dessas condições dermatológicas
Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research
Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4
While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge
of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In
the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of
Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus
crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced
environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian
Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by
2050. This means that unless we take immediate action, we will not be able to establish their current status,

Brazilian consortium for the study on renal diseases associated with COVID-19 : a multicentric effort to understand SARS-CoV-2-related nephropathy
Kidney involvement appears to be frequent in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Despite this, information concerning renal involvement in COVID-19 is still scarce. Several mechanisms appear to be involved in the complex relationship between the virus and the kidney. Also, different morphological patterns have been described in the kidneys of patients with COVID-19. For some authors, however, this association may be just a coincidence. To investigate this issue, we propose assessing renal morphology associated with COVID-19 at the renal pathology reference center of federal university hospitals in Brazil. Data will come from a consortium involving 17 federal university hospitals belonging to Empresa Brasileira de Serviços Hospitalares (EBSERH) network, as well as some state hospitals and an autopsy center. All biopsies will be sent to the referral center for renal pathology of the EBSERH network. The data will include patients who had coronavirus disease, both alive and deceased, with or without pre-existing kidney disease. Kidney biopsies will be analyzed by light, fluorescence, and electron microscopy. Furthermore, immunohistochemical (IHC) staining for various inflammatory cells (i.e., cells expressing CD3, CD20, CD4, CD8, CD138, CD68, and CD57) as well as angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) will be performed on paraffinized tissue sections. In addition to ultrastructural assays, in situ hybridization (ISH), IHC and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) will be used to detect Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in renal tissue. For the patients diagnosed with Collapsing Glomerulopathy, peripheral blood will be collected for apolipoprotein L-1 (APOL1) genotyping. For patients with thrombotic microangiopathy, thrombospondin type 1 motif, member 13 (ADAMTS13), antiphospholipid, and complement panel will be performed. The setting of this study is Brazil, which is second behind the United States in highest confirmed cases and deaths. With this complete approach, we hope to help define the spectrum and impact, whether immediate or long-term, of kidney injury caused by SARS-CoV-2
A ética do silêncio racial no contexto urbano: políticas públicas e desigualdade social no Recife, 1900-1940
Mais de meio século após o preconceito racial ter se tornado o principal alvo dos movimentos urbanos pelos direitos civis nos Estados Unidos e na África do Sul, e décadas depois do surgimento dos movimentos negros contemporâneos no Brasil, o conjunto de ferramentas legislativas criado no Brasil para promover o direito à cidade ainda adere à longa tradição brasileira de silêncio acerca da questão racial. Este artigo propõe iniciar uma exploração das raízes históricas desse fenômeno, remontando ao surgimento do silêncio sobre a questão racial na política urbana do Recife, Brasil, durante a primeira metade do século XX. O Recife foi eé um exemplo paradigmático do processo pelo qual uma cidade amplamente marcada por traços negros e africanos chegou a ser definida política e legalmente como um espaço pobre, subdesenvolvido e racialmente neutro, onde as desigualdades sociais originaram na exclusão capitalista, e não na escravidão e nas ideologias do racismo científico. Neste sentido, Recife lança luzes sobre a política urbana que se gerou sob a sombra do silêncio racial.More than half a century after racial prejudice became central to urban civil rights movements in the United States and South Africa, and decades after the emergence of Brazil’s contemporary Black movements, Brazil's internationally recognized body of rights-to-the-city legislation still adheres to the country's long historical tradition of racial silence. This article explores the historical roots of this phenomenon by focusing on the emergence of racial silence in Recife, Brazil during the first half of the 20th Century. Recife was and remains a paradigmatic example of the process through which a city marked by its Black and African roots came to be legally and politically defined as a poor, underdeveloped and racially neutral space, where social inequalities derived from capitalist exclusion rather than from slavery and scientific racism.
