Destination Deimos: A Design Reference Architecture for Initial Human Exploration of the Mars System
The two biggest challenges to successful human operations in interplanetary space are flight dynamics, constrained by the cold hard physics of the rocket equation, and bioastronautics, the psychophysiological realities of human adaptation, or lack thereof, to the deep space environment. Without substantial innovation in project/mission architecture and vehicle design, human exploration of the Mars system could be problematic for decades. Although a human landing on Mars is inevitable, humans-in-the-loop telerobotic exploration from the outer Martian moon Deimos is the best way to begin. Precursor robotic missions for reconnaissance and local site preparation will be required
The Elephant in the Room: Biomedical Challenges for Long Duration Lunar Habitation
This slide presentation reviews 4 biomedical challenges that are involved in long duration lunar habitation: dust, radiation, hypogravity and synergistic effects. The first two of these challenges are reviewed with more in-depth information. The dangers of dust relate to the particle deposition in the lungs. The dangers of radiation are related to the permissible exposure limit (PEL) and the Risk of Exposure Induced Death (REID), a statistical approach pegged to a single radiation effect: Death from cancer directly attributable to the exposure. There has been a realization that radiation is more harmful than predicted. This is demonstrated by showing the change in the recommended career dose limits, have changed between 1989 and 2000
Bogged Down Trying to Define Federal Wetlands
This article examines these cases as well as the history, policies, and rationales behind identifying and conserving wetlands. It proposes a unique analytical method for valuation of wetlands. Under the proposed analysis, government agencies and landowners would be required to prepare economic impact statements containing cost/benefit analyses measuring the effects of wetlands delineations upon land values. These analyses would provide the basis for determining the value of preserving wetlands ecosystems as well as the basis for determining fair compensation payable to landowners in the event they suffer land use or income loss as a result of wetlands delineations
Inpatient and Outpatient Infection as a Trigger of Cardiovascular Disease: The ARIC Study
Background
Acute infections are known cardiovascular disease (CVD) triggers, but little is known regarding how CVD risk varies following inpatient versus outpatient infections. We hypothesized that in‐ and outpatient infections are associated with CVD risk and that the association is stronger for inpatient infections. Methods and Results
Coronary heart disease (CHD) and ischemic stroke cases were identified and adjudicated in the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study). Hospital discharge diagnosis codes and Medicare claims data were used to identify infections diagnosed in in‐ and outpatient settings. A case‐crossover design and conditional logistic regression were used to compare in‐ and outpatient infections among CHD and ischemic stroke cases (14, 30, 42, and 90 days before the event) with corresponding control periods 1 and 2 years previously. A total of 1312 incident CHD cases and 727 incident stroke cases were analyzed. Inpatient infections (14‐day odds ratio [OR]=12.83 [5.74, 28.68], 30‐day OR=8.39 [4.92, 14.31], 42‐day OR=6.24 [4.02, 9.67], and 90‐day OR=4.48 [3.18, 6.33]) and outpatient infections (14‐day OR=3.29 [2.50, 4.32], 30‐day OR=2.69 [2.14, 3.37], 42‐day OR=2.45 [1.97, 3.05], and 90‐day OR=1.99 [1.64, 2.42]) were more common in all CHD case periods compared with control periods and inpatient infection was a stronger CHD trigger for all time periods (P Conclusions
In‐ and outpatient infections are associated with CVD risk. Patients with an inpatient infection may be at particularly elevated CVD risk and should be considered potential candidates for CVD prophylaxis
Global Macroevolution and Macroecology of Passerine Song
Studying the macroevolution of the songs of Passeriformes (perching birds) has proved challenging. The complexity of the task stems not just from the macroevolutionary and macroecological challenge of modeling so many species, but also from the difficulty in collecting and quantifying birdsong itself. Using machine learning techniques, we extracted songs from a large citizen science dataset, and then analyzed the evolution, and biotic and abiotic predictors of variation in birdsong across 578 passerine species. Contrary to expectations, we found few links between life‐history traits (monogamy and sexual dimorphism) and the evolution of song pitch (peak frequency) or song complexity (standard deviation of frequency). However, we found significant support for morphological constraints on birdsong, as reflected in a negative correlation between bird size and song pitch. We also found that broad‐scale biogeographical and climate factors such as net primary productivity, temperature, and regional species richness were significantly associated with both the evolution and present‐day distribution of bird song features. Our analysis integrates comparative and spatial modeling with newly developed data cleaning and curation tools, and suggests that evolutionary history, morphology, and present‐day ecological processes shape the distribution of song diversity in these charismatic and important birds

The Role of the Private Sector in Supporting Malaria Control in Resource Development Settings.
Industrial operations of the private sector, such as extraction, agriculture, and construction, can bring large numbers of people into new settlement areas and cause environmental change that promotes the transmission of vector-borne diseases. Industry-related workers and communities unduly exposed to infection risk typically lack the knowledge and means to protect themselves. However, there is a strong business rationale for protecting local resident employees through integrated vector control programs, as well as an ethical responsibility to care for these individuals and the affected communities. We discuss the role and challenges of the private sector in developing malaria control programs, which can include extensive collaborations with the public sector that go on to form the basis of national vector control programs or more broadly support local healthcare systems
