Random walks on mutual microRNA-target gene interaction network improve the prediction of disease-associated microRNAs

Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been shown to play an important role in pathological initiation, progression and maintenance. Because identification in the laboratory of disease-related miRNAs is not straightforward, numerous network-based methods have been developed to predict novel miRNAs in silico. Homogeneous networks (in which every node is a miRNA) based on the targets shared between miRNAs have been widely used to predict their role in disease phenotypes. Although such homogeneous networks can predict potential disease-associated miRNAs, they do not consider the roles of the target genes of the miRNAs. Here, we introduce a novel method based on a heterogeneous network that not only considers miRNAs but also the corresponding target genes in the network model. Results: Instead of constructing homogeneous miRNA networks, we built heterogeneous miRNA networks consisting of both miRNAs and their target genes, using databases of known miRNA-target gene interactions. In addition, as recent studies demonstrated reciprocal regulatory relations between miRNAs and their target genes, we considered these heterogeneous miRNA networks to be undirected, assuming mutual miRNA-target interactions. Next, we introduced a novel method (RWRMTN) operating on these mutual heterogeneous miRNA networks to rank candidate disease-related miRNAs using a random walk with restart (RWR) based algorithm. Using both known disease-associated miRNAs and their target genes as seed nodes, the method can identify additional miRNAs involved in the disease phenotype. Experiments indicated that RWRMTN outperformed two existing state-of-the-art methods: RWRMDA, a network-based method that also uses a RWR on homogeneous (rather than heterogeneous) miRNA networks, and RLSMDA, a machine learning-based method. Interestingly, we could relate this performance gain to the emergence of "disease modules" in the heterogeneous miRNA networks used as input for the algorithm. Moreover, we could demonstrate that RWRMTN is stable, performing well when using both experimentally validated and predicted miRNA-target gene interaction data for network construction. Finally, using RWRMTN, we identified 76 novel miRNAs associated with 23 disease phenotypes which were present in a recent database of known disease-miRNA associations. Conclusions: Summarizing, using random walks on mutual miRNA-target networks improves the prediction of novel disease-associated miRNAs because of the existence of "disease modules" in these networks

Free cashflow and firm performance: Evidence from sectoral levels for Vietnamese listed firms

Using data of listed firms on Hochiminh Stock Exchange, the study examines the impact of free cashflowson firm performance of manufacture, trade and real estates sectors. The findingsconsistently show that free cashflowshave a positive effect on firm performance for all sectors. However, the impact of free cashflows on firm performanceis different between firms with and without investment opportunities. This shows the relevance of Jensen\u27s free-cashflows theory (1986) to listed Vietnamese firms at thesectoral level

Determinants of Corporate Disclosure in Financial Statements: Evidence from Vietnamese Listed Firms

Using data of listed firms on Hochiminh Stock Exchange, the study examines determinants of corporate disclosure in financial statements. In line with the literature, the findingsshow that firm size, the use of financial leverage and the presence of supervision board have a positive influence on corporate disclosure. Furthermore, auditing firm (whether a Big4 or not) also plays an important role in the degree of information disclosure by firms.Contradicting to the literature, however state ownership and the proportion of non-executive members in director board show a negative relation to corporate disclosure level. These counter factscanbe explained by real situations of Vietnam over the studied period. Finally, the concurrent role between chair of director board and managing director reduces corporate disclosure degree, as predicted by the agency theory

The Causality Relationship between Hnx Index and Stock Trading Volume in Hanoi Stock Exchange

This paper examines the casual relations between the market return and trading volume for the Ha Noi Stock Exchange during the period from May 3th , 2013 to March 2rd, 2016. This paper uses Granger test and the results showed that the change of the volume of transactions that affect the change of HNX-Index. On the basis of this conclusion, we shall determine the degree of influence of the change in trading volume with HNX-Index by means of regression analysis

What sources of finance constrain Vietnamese listed firms?

This study is to investigate the sources of finance imposing the constraints on Vietnamese listed firms, after the introduction and rapid growth of the equity markets and the privatization wave that started since 1992. Using accounting data of listed firms on the Vietnamese stock markets, we find that listed firms are financially constrained with respect to both external funding sources, equity and long-term debt finance. Particularly, state-owned firms do exhibit higher sensitivity coefficients of equity than private firms, albeit with a non-statistically significant difference. For bank loan financing, we notice that large (HOSE listed) state-owned firms show a sensitivity that is three times the sensitivity of the private firms. The smaller HNX listed firms, however, show the reverse result, the private firms have a sensitivity coefficient that is twice as large as the one for the state-owned firms

WOMEN OF THANH HOA PROVINCE WITH MOVEMENT “THREE RESPONSIBILITIES” (1965-1975)

After blatantly sabotaging the Geneva Agreements, the US imperialists invaded southern Vietnam and used their air force to destroy the socialist North. The country's independence and reunification were once again facing an extremely serious situation. President Ho Chi Minh issued a call to the resistance war against the US and save the country. The Socialist North became the great rear of the southern battlefield. Vietnamese women are more than anyone else, deeply aware: their status, career, and family happiness are associated with the country's destiny. Therefore, the sisters are more imbued with Uncle Ho's teachings: "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom". Women across the country have joined the entire Party, army and people in their determination to fight to save the country. Movements arose everywhere: Women applied to the government, volunteer organizations took care of all the household chores; volunteering to replace men in production, social work, and encouraging relatives to go to war

Outcome versus process value in service delivery

    Get PDF
Purpose: This study is embedded in social exchange and transaction cost theories. The objective is twofold: First, to compare the relative importance of process value and outcome value in building affective and cognitive relationship strength; and second, to compare the relative effects of each type of relationship strength on attitudinal and behavioral loyalty. Design/methodology/approach: This empirical study features a quantitative approach. The sample comprises 167 business-to-business (B2B) customers of a large transportation and logistics company in Vietnam. Findings: Process value and outcome value have different effects on affective relationship strength: The effect of process value is greater than that of outcome value. In addition, cognitive strength has a stronger impact on both attitudinal and behavioral loyalty than affective strength. Research limitations/implications: These insights extend extant literature regarding the process and outcome components of the service assessment. Further studies also should employ a cross-industry, cross-country sample to examine the potential moderating effects of country- or industry-specific factors. These findings show B2B managers how to make appropriate resource allocation and investment decisions to enhance relationship strength and resulting customer loyalty. Originality/value: To clarify the links among customer value, relationship strength and customer loyalty, this study examines the relative importance of rational and non-rational factors (i.e., process value vs. outcome value; affective strength vs. cognitive strength) for relationship performance. Unlike most prior research, this study is set in the B2B context of a developing country

Epidemiology of Leprosy in Vietnam and the Effectiveness of Multidrug Therapy (MDT) in the Management of the Disease

    Get PDF
Leprosy is a chronic infection caused by the acid-fast, rod-shaped bacillus Mycobacterium leprae. Leprosy can be considered connected diseases that primarily affect the superficial tissues, especially the skin and peripheral nerves. The social and psychological effects of leprosy, as well as its highly visible debilities and sequelae, have resulted in a historical stigma associated with leprosy. Vietnam has seen a highly significant decrease in the prevalence rate (PR) of leprosy since 1983. From 1983 onwards, with the introduction of multidrug therapy (MDT), the prevalence of the disease has dropped to less than one case per 10,000 individuals from 1995. After over two decades, a total of 109 cases were registered with a prevalence rate of 0.01 per 10,000 population in 2017. It is clear that over the past 35 years, the profile of leprosy in Vietnam has been changed significantly followed by the treatment with MDT. Leprosy has become a rare disease in Vietnam. This chapter presents the trend in the epidemiology of leprosy in Vietnam from 1983 to 2018 and also mentions the effectiveness of multidrug therapy (MDT) in the management of this disease. Based on individual records and annual reports, the prevalence of registered cases, the number of new cases detected yearly, their sex, age, classification (MB, multibacillary; PB, paucibacillary) and disability status are carefully presented
