    In his study of amenable unitary representations, M. E. B. Bekka asked if there is an analogue for such representations of the remarkable fixed-point property for amenable groups. In this paper, we prove such a fixed-point theorem in the more general context of a GG-amenable von Neumann algebra MM, where GG is a locally compact group acting on MM. The F{\o}lner conditions of Connes and Bekka are extended to the case where MM is semifinite and admits a faithful, semifinite, normal trace which is invariant under the action of GG

    Connexins: Mechanisms regulating protein levels and intercellular communication

    AbstractIntercellular communication can occur through gap junction channels, which are comprised of connexin proteins. Therefore, levels of connexins can directly correlate with gap junctional intercellular communication. Because gap junctions have a critical role in maintaining cellular homeostasis, the regulation of connexin protein levels is important. In the connexin life cycle, connexin protein levels can be modified through differential gene transcription or altered through trafficking and degradation mechanisms. More recently, significant attention has been directed to the pathways that cells utilize to increase or decrease connexin levels and thus indirectly, gap junctional communication.     Image processing for smarter browsing of ocean color data products: investigating algal blooms

    Remote sensing technology continues to play a significant role in the understanding of our environment and the investigation of the Earth. Ocean color is the water hue due to the presence of tiny plants containing the pigment chlorophyll, sediments, and colored dissolved organic material and so can provide valuable information on coastal ecosystems. We propose to make the browsing of Ocean Color data more efficient for users by using image processing techniques to extract useful information which can be accessible through browser searching. Image processing is applied to chlorophyll and sea surface temperature images. The automatic image processing of the visual level 1 and level 2 data allow us to investigate the occurrence of algal blooms. Images with colors in a certain range (red, orange etc.) are used to address possible algal blooms and allow us to examine the seasonal variation of algal blooms in Europe (around Ireland and in the Baltic Sea).     When Nanoparticles Meet Biofilms — Interactions Guiding the Environmental Fate and Accumulation of Nanoparticles

    Bacteria are essential components of all natural and many engineered systems. The most active fractions of bacteria are now recognized to occur as biofilms, where cells are attached and surrounded by a secreted matrix of “sticky” extracellular polymeric substances. Recent investigations have established that significant accumulation of nanoparticles (NPs) occurs in aquatic biofilms. These studies point to the emerging roles of biofilms for influencing partitioning and possibly transformations of NPs in both natural and engineered systems. While attached biofilms are efficient “sponges” for NPs, efforts to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms guiding interactions between NPs and biofilms have just begun. In this mini review, special attention is focused on NP–biofilm interactions within the aquatic environment. We highlight key physical, chemical, and biological processes that affect interactions and accumulation of NPs by bacterial biofilms. We posit that these biofilm processes present the likely possibility for unique biological and chemical transformations of NPs. Ultimately, the environmental fate of NPs is influenced by biofilms, and therefore requires a more in-depth understanding of their fundamental properties

    BackgroundThe American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score is composed of a patient-reported portion and a physician assessment. Although the patient-reported score is frequently used to assess postoperative outcomes after shoulder arthroplasty, no previous studies have used the physician-assessment component. This study evaluated the relationship of the ASES physician-assessment measurements with patient-reported shoulder and general health outcomes.MethodsA retrospective review of a prospectively collected multicenter database was used to analyze patients who underwent primary reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) from 2012 to 2015 with a minimum 2-year follow-up. ASES physician-assessment and patient-reported components and 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) general health questionnaires were obtained preoperatively and 2 years postoperatively. The relationship between ASES physician measurements with ASES patient-reported outcome (PRO) scores and SF-12 Physical and Mental domain scores was assessed with Pearson correlation coefficients.ResultsIncluded were 74 patients (32 men; mean age, 69.2 years; body mass index, 29.4 kg/m2). Preoperative physician measurements and PRO scores were not significantly correlated. Postoperatively, only the ASES physician-measured active (R = 0.54, P < .01) and passive forward flexion (R = 0.53, P < .01) demonstrated moderate correlation with ASES patient scores. The remaining clinical measurements had no significant correlations with ASES patient or SF-12 scores. During the 2-year period, only improvements in active forward flexion correlated with improvements in ASES patient scores (R = 0.36, P < .01).ConclusionsLittle correlation exists between clinical measurements from the ASES physician component and PROs, including the ASES patient-reported and SF-12 general health surveys, in RTSA patients. Improvement in active forward flexion is the only clinical measurement correlated with PRO improvement at 2 years

    Aggregating multiple body sensors for analysis in sports

    Real time monitoring of the wellness of sportspersons, during their sporting activity and training, is important in order to maximise performance during the sporting event itself and during training, as well as being important for the health of the sportsperson overall. We have combined a suite of common, off-the-shelf sensors with specialist body sensing technology we are developing ourselves and constructed a software system for recording, analysing and presenting sensed data gathered from a single player during a sporting activity, a football match. We gather readings for heart rate, galvanic skin response, motion, heat flux, respiration, and location (GPS) using on-body sensors, while simultaneously tracking player activity using a combination of a playercam video and pitch-wide video recording. We have aggregated all this sensed data into a single overview of player performance and activity which can be reviewed, post-event. We are currently working on integrating other non-invasive methods for real-time on-body monitoring of sweat electrolytes and pH via a textile-based sweat sampling and analysis platform. Our work is heading in two directions; firstly from post-event data aggregation to real-time monitoring, and secondly, to convert raw sensor readings into performance indicators that are meaningful to practitioners in the field

    Sensor node localisation using a stereo camera rig

    In this paper, we use stereo vision processing techniques to detect and localise sensors used for monitoring simulated environmental events within an experimental sensor network testbed. Our sensor nodes communicate to the camera through patterns emitted by light emitting diodes (LEDs). Ultimately, we envisage the use of very low-cost, low-power, compact microcontroller-based sensing nodes that employ LED communication rather than power hungry RF to transmit data that is gathered via existing CCTV infrastructure. To facilitate our research, we have constructed a controlled environment where nodes and cameras can be deployed and potentially hazardous chemical or physical plumes can be introduced to simulate environmental pollution events in a controlled manner. In this paper we show how 3D spatial localisation of sensors becomes a straightforward task when a stereo camera rig is used rather than a more usual 2D CCTV camera
