    Sine-Gordon soliton as a model for Hawking radiation of moving black holes and quantum soliton evaporation

    The intriguing connection between black holes' evaporation and physics of solitons is opening novel roads to finding observable phenomena. It is known from the inverse scattering transform that velocity is a fundamental parameter in solitons theory. Taking this into account, the study of Haw\-king radiation by a moving soliton gets a growing relevance. However, a theoretical context for the description of this phenomenon is still lacking. Here, we adopt a soliton geometrization technique to study the quantum emission of a moving soliton in a one-dimensional model. Representing a black hole by the one soliton solution of the sine-Gordon equation, we consider Haw\-king emission spectra of a quantized massless scalar field on the soliton-induced metric. We study the relation between the soliton velocity and the black hole temperature. Our results address a new scenario in the detection of new physics in the quantum gravity panorama.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Large extracellular vesicles: Size matters in tumor progression.

    Abstract Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) represent a heterogeneous population of particles naturally released from all cells, delimited by a lipid bilayer and able to horizontally transfer their cargos to recipient cells. These features imply the growing interest on EVs in cancer biology as biomarkers and therapeutic targets. In this review, we will highlight the specific process related to biogenesis and release of large EVs (L-EVs) derived from the plasma membrane (PM) compared to the small and well described exosomes, generated through the classical endosome-multivesicular body (MVB) pathway. The control of PM rigidity by cells depends on lipid/protein composition, cytoskeleton dynamics, cytoplasmic viscosity, ions balance, metabolic reprogramming and specific intracellular signaling pathways, all critical determinants of L-EVs biogenesis. We will focus in details on a specific class of L-EVs, named Large Oncosomes (LO), exclusively shed by cancer cells and with a size ranging from 1 μm up to 10 μm. We will examine LO specific cargos, either proteins or nucleic acids (i.e. mRNA, microRNAs, single/double-stranded DNA), as well as their functional role in cancer development and progression, also discussing the mechanisms of L-EVs internalization by recipient cells. Overall we will highlight the potential of LO as specific diagnostic/prognostic cancer biomarkers discussing the associated challenges

    Fish Response to Multiple Anthropogenic Stressors in Mediterranean Coastal Lagoons: A Comparative Study of the Role of Different Management Strategies

    Transitional waters are among the most productive ecosystems of the world and their biotic communities show high diversity and complex mechanisms of self-regulation that provide valuable ecosystem services and societal goods and benefits. In this work a comparison of the fish assemblages of three non-tidal Mediterranean coastal lagoons is carried out in order to evaluate the impacts of alternative management strategies. The anthropogenic pressures acting on the lagoons were quantified by means of categorical indicators, while the characteristics of the fish assemblages were summarized in multi-metric indices (MMIs). Two MMIs were developed using data collected with a beach seine net and with fyke nets, following an empirical approach that selects, from a pool of 73 metrics, the combination that maximizes the MMI/pressure relationship. The two MMIs include four metrics each, most of which are based on feeding mode functional guilds and habitat use functional guilds, and they are sensitive to anthropogenic pressures. The human activities directly or indirectly affecting water quality are the ones that most influence the fish assemblage, while the presence of artisanal fisheries, a typical and relevant resource use in these lagoons, seems to play a beneficial role. Lagoon fisheries management relies on the maintenance of infrastructures that guarantee the hydraulic functioning of the lagoon, thus ensuring exchanges with the adjacent coastal sea, and therefore indirectly contributing to the habitat quality

    Extracorporeal Shock Wave Treatment (ESWT) enhances the in vitro-induced differentiation of human tendon-derived stem/progenitor cells (hTSPCs)

    Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive and innovative technology for the management of specific tendinopathies. In order to elucidate the ESWT-mediated clinical benefits, human Tendon-derived Stem/Progenitor cells (hTSPCs) explanted from 5 healthy semitendinosus (ST) and 5 ruptured Achilles (AT) tendons were established. While hTSPCs from the two groups showed similar proliferation rates and stem cell surface marker profiles, we found that the clonogenic potential was maintained only in cells derived from healthy donors. Interestingly, ESWT significantly accelerated hTSPCs differentiation, suggesting that the clinical benefits of ESWT may be ascribed to increased efficiency of tendon repair after injury

    Abstract Laser cutting of NIMONIC 263 sheet was investigated by using a 100 W Yb:YAG fiber laser. The study was divided in two phases. In the first one, the critical cutting speeds were found fixing the average power (80 W), changing the pulse duration, the cutting speed, the nozzle diameter and the focus position. Then, a full factorial design was adopted according to the DoE methodology. In order to determine which of the process parameters affect the kerf geometry and how, Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA) was used. Experimental results show the possibility to obtain kerf characterized by narrow width and low taper angle values

    Diabetic Foot Infections:The Diagnostic Challenges

    Diabetic foot infections (DFIs) are severe complications of long-standing diabetes, and they represent a diagnostic challenge, since the differentiation between osteomyelitis (OM), soft tissue infection (STI), and Charcot's osteoarthropathy is very difficult to achieve. Nevertheless, such differential diagnosis is mandatory in order to plan the most appropriate treatment for the patient. The isolation of the pathogen from bone or soft tissues is still the gold standard for diagnosis; however, it would be desirable to have a non-invasive test that is able to detect, localize, and evaluate the extent of the infection with high accuracy. A multidisciplinary approach is the key for the correct management of diabetic patients dealing with infective complications, but at the moment, no definite diagnostic flow charts still exist. This review aims at providing an overview on multimodality imaging for the diagnosis of DFI and to address evidence-based answers to the clinicians when they appeal to radiologists or nuclear medicine (NM) physicians for studying their patients

    Transperineal excision of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors of the ischiorectal fossa: Case report of a rare tumor in a frequently forgotten anatomical region

    Introduction and importance: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor is an aggressive tumor that arises from peripheral nerves. Frequently associated with neurofibromatosis, its common localization is in the extremities, trunk (with paravertebral regions), neck and head. Some cases have been found in the pelvis or uterus. In this case report we illustrate one of the rarest localization of this type of tumor in the ischiorectal fossa, with the full recovery of the patient after surgical excision and radiotherapy. Case presentation: A 61-year-old woman showed a lump near the anus which was initially diagnosed as a lipoma of the right ischiorectal fossa, by Computed Tomography scan. The tumor was completely removed with a minimal skin incision, and the patient had a complete recovery. Only the pathological examination determined the diagnosis of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, in this unusual localization. In consideration of its high aggressiveness the patient underwent radiotherapy. After more than two years of follow-up there is no sign of recurrence. Discussion: In sites far from branches of nerves, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors can be considered episodic. Ischiorectal fossa is a rare localization, and the differential diagnosis from benign mesenchymal cell tumors can be challenging. When possible, a biopsy should be performed before surgery. Conclusion: Surgical excision of tumors in ischiorectal fossa should be always complete, in consideration of possible histological surprise
