Dissipation of dark matter
Fluids often display dissipative properties. We explore dissipation in the
form of bulk viscosity in the cold dark matter fluid. We constrain this model
using current data from supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations and the cosmic
microwave background. Considering the isotropic and homogeneous background
only, viscous dark matter is allowed to have a bulk viscosity
Pas, also consistent with the expected integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect
(which plagues some models with bulk viscosity). We further investigate the
small-scale formation of viscous dark matter halos, which turns out to place
significantly stronger constraints on the dark matter viscosity. The existence
of dwarf galaxies is guaranteed only for much smaller values of the dark matter
viscosity, Pas.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, published in PR
PERISCOPE: PERIapsis Subsurface Cave Optical Explorer
The PERISCOPE study focuses primarily on lunar caves, due to the potential for being imaged in orbital scenarios. In the intervening years, from 2012-2015, scientists developed further rationales and interest in the scientific value of lunar caves. It does not appear that they are likely to be sinks for water-ice due to the relatively warm temperatures(~-20 degrees Celsius) in the caves leading to geologically-rapid migration of unbound water due to sublimation, and inevitable loss through any skylights. However, the skylights themselves reveal apparent complex layering, which may speak to a more complex multi-stage evolution of mare flood basalts than previously considered, and so their examination may provide even more insight into the lunar mare, which in turn provide a primary record of early solar system crustal formal and evolution processes. Further extrapolation of these insights can be found within the exoplanet community of researchers, who find the information useful for calibrating star formation and planetary evolution models. In addition, catalogues of lunar and martian skylights, "caves" or "atypical pit craters" have been developed, with numbers for both bodies now in the low hundreds thanks to additional high resolution surveys and revisiting the existing image databases
A new beamline for laser spin-polarization at ISOLDE
A beamline dedicated to the production of laser-polarized radioactive beams
has been constructed at ISOLDE, CERN. We present here different simulations
leading to the design and construction of the setup, as well as technical
details of the full setup and examples of the achieved polarizations for
several radioisotopes. Beamline simulations show a good transmission through
the entire line, in agreement with observations. Simulations of the induced
nuclear spin-polarization as a function of atom-laser interaction length are
presented for Na, [1] and for Ar, which is studied in this
work. Adiabatic spin rotation of the spin-polarized ensemble of atoms, and how
this influences the observed nuclear ensemble polarization, are also performed
for the same nuclei. For Ar, we show that multiple-frequency pumping
enhances the ensemble polarization by a factor 1.85, in agreement with
predictions from a rate equations model.

TOSCA-based orchestration of complex clusters at the IaaS level
[EN] This paper describes the adoption and extension of the TOSCA standard by the INDIGO-DataCloud project for the definition and deployment of complex computing clusters together with the required support in both OpenStack and OpenNebula, carried out in close collaboration with industry partners such as IBM. Two examples of these clusters are described in this paper, the definition of an elastic computing cluster to support the Galaxy bioinformatics application where the nodes are dynamically added and removed from the cluster to adapt to the workload, and the definition of an scalable Apache Mesos cluster for the execution of batch jobs and support for long-running services. The coupling of TOSCA with Ansible Roles to perform automated installation has resulted in the definition of high-level, deterministic templates to provision complex computing clusters across different Cloud sites. The authors would like to thank the European Commission for the financial support for project

Gene expression across mammalian organ development
The evolution of gene expression in mammalian organ development remains largely uncharacterized. Here we report the transcriptomes of seven organs (cerebrum, cerebellum, heart, kidney, liver, ovary and testis) across developmental time points from early organogenesis to adulthood for human, macaque, mouse, rat, rabbit, opossum and chicken. Comparisons of gene expression patterns identified developmental stage correspondences across species, and differences in the timing of key events during the development of the gonads. We found that the breadth of gene expression and the extent of purifying selection gradually decrease during development, whereas the amount of positive selection and expression of new genes increase. We identified differences in the temporal trajectories of expression of individual genes across species, with brain tissues showing the smallest percentage of trajectory changes, and the liver and testis showing the largest. Our work provides a resource of developmental transcriptomes of seven organs across seven species, and comparative analyses that characterize the development and evolution of mammalian organs
