    CoachNet: The further development of a coordinated network for sport coaching in Europe

    Leeds Metropolitan University (LMU), in partnership with the European Coaching Council (ECC), was successful in a bid to the European Commission under the Preparatory Action in the Field of Sport (EAC/18/2011). The project was designed to develop an innovative approach that would contribute to the strengthening of the organisation of sport in Europe as part of the ā€˜good governance, strand of the EU Preparatory Action in the Field of Sport. The primary objective was to examine ways in which the organisation of coaching could be enhanced in Europe, with a particular focus on the greater involvement of coaches in decisionmaking. In exploring ways to maximise the ā€˜voice of the coachā€™, the partnership between LMU and ECC was central to the project. ECC is the continental division of the International Council for Coaching Excellence (ICCE). Through its network, ECC was in a position to identify current organisational arrangements for coaching across Europe. LMU is a well established research and practice oriented university in the UK and played a lead role in coordinating the project and guiding the research methodology through its Sport Coaching and Physical Education (SCOPE) Research and Enterprise Centre. Varying arrangements for the development and management of coaching were observed through a study of European countries. Within this varied landscape, the representation of coaches was sporadic, ranging from no representative mechanism to a number of good practice examples that made provision for the tiered engagement of coaches depending on their role; sport and coaching status category. These examples included confederated models across sports; blended models across coaching status categories and single and multi-sport models for the engagement and representation of coaches. The study concluded that there is a need for a more considered approach to the involvement of coaches in decision-making, with a number of recommendations developed for consideration by member states and the European divisions of the International Federations. These recommendations proposed that the structure of ECC as the European arm of ICCE be reviewed, with the intention to more strongly engage organisations that have been established to represent the voice of coaches and leading to a re-structuring of the organisation. In this context, ICCE and ECC should play an even stronger advocacy, representative and action role in establishing coaching as a blended profession, which includes volunteer, part-time paid and full-time paid coaches. More coherent structures for the engagement of coaches in each sport and country are also recommended. This should occur as part of a wider commitment that the principle of listening to and hearing the voice of the coach should become more strongly embedded within the way in which sporting and related organisations operate. The EU is well placed to lead on this type of approach, ensuring the coaches are more fully engaged in social dialogue and in the process to further enhance the role of sport and coaching in Europe. Further research is also recommended on the nature, needs and demographics of the coaching workforce. All of these approaches need to be tempered with the realisation that coaches are individual decision-makers, operating in a wide variety of contexts and many of whom do not show a propensity for involvement in formal ā€˜representativeā€™ structures. The need for alternative methods to connect with and engage coaches was, therefore, identified. These include a more segmented approach to engaging with coaches, depending on their coaching role and status, as well as the utilisation of more informal modes of web-based communication to connect directly with coaches in their daily lives. In all existing and future scenarios, the key role of federations at the national and international level in seeking, activating and allocating financial and other resources to connect with and support their coaches was highlighted. The findings have been notified to ICCE for formal consideration, leading to changes in the ways in which the voice of the coach is more clearly represented within the work of the organisation. ICCE should continue to work closely with the EU Sport Unit to ensure that the recommendations of this report are implemented and evaluated on an on-going basis

    Optical investigation of the metal-insulator transition in FeSb2FeSb_2

    We present a comprehensive optical study of the narrow gap FeSb2FeSb_2 semiconductor. From the optical reflectivity, measured from the far infrared up to the ultraviolet spectral range, we extract the complete absorption spectrum, represented by the real part Ļƒ1(Ļ‰)\sigma_1(\omega) of the complex optical conductivity. With decreasing temperature below 80 K, we find a progressive depletion of Ļƒ1(Ļ‰)\sigma_1(\omega) below Egāˆ¼280E_g\sim 280 cmāˆ’1^{-1}, the semiconducting optical gap. The suppressed (Drude) spectral weight within the gap is transferred at energies Ļ‰>Eg\omega>E_g and also partially piles up over a continuum of excitations extending in the spectral range between zero and EgE_g. Moreover, the interaction of one phonon mode with this continuum leads to an asymmetric phonon shape. Even though several analogies between FeSb2FeSb_2 and FeSiFeSi were claimed and a Kondo-insulator scenario was also invoked for both systems, our data on FeSb2FeSb_2 differ in several aspects from those of FeSiFeSi. The relevance of our findings with respect to the Kondo insulator description will be addressed.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure

    Anomalous thermopower and Nernst effect in CeCoIn5\rm CeCoIn_5: entropy-current loss in precursor state

    The heavy-electron superconductor CeCoIn5_5 exhibits a puzzling precursor state above its superconducting critical temperature at TcT_c = 2.3 K. The thermopower and Nernst signal are anomalous. Below 15 K, the entropy current of the electrons undergoes a steep decrease reaching āˆ¼\sim0 at TcT_c. Concurrently, the off-diagonal thermoelectric current Ī±xy\alpha_{xy} is enhanced. The delicate sensitivity of the zero-entropy state to field implies phase coherence over large distances. The prominent anomalies in the thermoelectric current contrast with the relatively weak effects in the resistivity and magnetization.Comment: 5 figures, 4 page

    Spin resonance in the d-wave superconductor CeCoIn5

    Neutron scattering is used to probe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the d-wave heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5_{5} (Tc_{c}=2.3 K). Superconductivity develops from a state with slow (ā„Ī“\hbar\Gamma=0.3 Ā±\pm 0.15 meV) commensurate (Q0{\bf{Q_0}}=(1/2,1/2,1/2)) antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and nearly isotropic spin correlations. The characteristic wavevector in CeCoIn5_{5} is the same as CeIn3_{3} but differs from the incommensurate wavevector measured in antiferromagnetically ordered CeRhIn5_{5}. A sharp spin resonance (ā„Ī“<0.07\hbar\Gamma<0.07 meV) at ā„Ļ‰\hbar \omega = 0.60 Ā±\pm 0.03 meV develops in the superconducting state removing spectral weight from low-energy transfers. The presence of a resonance peak is indicative of strong coupling between f-electron magnetism and superconductivity and consistent with a d-wave gap order parameter satisfying Ī”(q+Q0)=āˆ’Ī”(q)\Delta({\bf q+Q_0})=-\Delta({\bf q}).Comment: (5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Phys.     The thermal expansion and heat capacity of FeSb2 at ambient pressure agrees with a picture of a temperature induced spin state transition within the Fe t_{2g} multiplet. However, high pressure powder diffraction data show no sign of a structural phase transition up to 7GPa. A bulk modulus B=84(3)GPa has been extracted and the temperature dependence of the Gruneisen parameter has been determined. We discuss here the relevance of a Kondo insulator description for this material.Comment: Physical Review B in press (2005

    Functional changes during hospital stay in older patients admitted to an acute care ward : a multicenter observational study

    Objectives: Changes in physical performance during hospital stay have rarely been evaluated. In this study, we examined functional changes during hospital stay by assessing both physical performance and activities of daily living. Additionally, we investigated characteristics of older patients associated with meaningful in-hospital improvement in physical performance. Methods: The CRiteria to assess appropriate Medication use among Elderly complex patients project recruited 1123 patients aged >= 65 years, consecutively admitted to geriatric or internal medicine acute care wards of seven Italian hospitals. We analyzed data from 639 participating participants with a Mini Mental State Examination score >= 18/30. Physical performance was assessed by walking speed and grip strength, and functional status by activities of daily living at hospital admission and at discharge. Meaningful improvement was defined as a measured change of at least 1 standard deviation. Multivariable logistic regression models predicting meaningful improvement, included age, gender, type of admission (through emergency room or elective), and physical performance at admission. Results: Mean age of the study participants was 79 years (range 65-98), 52% were female. Overall, mean walking speed and grip strength performance improved during hospital stay (walking speed improvement: 0.04 +/- 0.20 m/s, p<0.001; grip strength improvement: 0.43 +/- 5.66 kg, p = 0.001), no significant change was observed in activities of daily living. Patients with poor physical performance at admission had higher odds for in-hospital improvement. Conclusion: Overall, physical performance measurements show an improvement during hospital stay. The margin for meaningful functional improvement is larger in patients with poor physical function at admission. Nevertheless, most of these patients continue to have poor performance at discharge
