    Controlling anomalous stresses in soft field-responsive systems

    We report a new phenomenon occurring in field-responsive suspensions: shear-induced anomalous stresses. Competition between a rotating field and a shear flow originates a multiplicity of anomalous stress behaviors in suspensions of bounded dimers constituted by induced dipoles. The great variety of stress regimes includes non-monotonous behaviors, multi-resonances, negative viscosity effect and blockades. The reversibility of the transitions between the different regimes and the self-similarity of the stresses make this phenomenon controllable and therefore applicable to modify macroscopic properties of soft condensed matter phasesComment: 5 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PR

    Rigged Hilbert Space Approach to the Schrodinger Equation

    It is shown that the natural framework for the solutions of any Schrodinger equation whose spectrum has a continuous part is the Rigged Hilbert Space rather than just the Hilbert space. The difficulties of using only the Hilbert space to handle unbounded Schrodinger Hamiltonians whose spectrum has a continuous part are disclosed. Those difficulties are overcome by using an appropriate Rigged Hilbert Space (RHS). The RHS is able to associate an eigenket to each energy in the spectrum of the Hamiltonian, regardless of whether the energy belongs to the discrete or to the continuous part of the spectrum. The collection of eigenkets corresponding to both discrete and continuous spectra forms a basis system that can be used to expand any physical wave function. Thus the RHS treats discrete energies (discrete spectrum) and scattering energies (continuous spectrum) on the same footing.Comment: 27 RevTex page

    The Hilbert space of Chern-Simons theory on the cylinder. A Loop Quantum Gravity approach

    As a laboratory for loop quantum gravity, we consider the canonical quantization of the three-dimensional Chern-Simons theory on a noncompact space with the topology of a cylinder. Working within the loop quantization formalism, we define at the quantum level the constraints appearing in the canonical approach and completely solve them, thus constructing a gauge and diffeomorphism invariant physical Hilbert space for the theory.     WALLABY Pre-Pilot Survey: H I Content of the Eridanus Supergroup

    We present observations of the Eridanus supergroup obtained with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) as part of the pre-pilot survey for the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY). The total number of detected H I sources is 55, of which 12 are background galaxies not associated with the Eridanus supergroup. Two massive H I clouds are identified and large H I debris fields are seen in the NGC 1359 interacting galaxy pair, and the face-on spiral galaxy NGC 1385. We describe the data products from the source finding algorithm and present the basic parameters. The presence of distorted H I morphology in all detected galaxies suggests ongoing tidal interactions within the subgroups. The Eridanus group has a large fraction of H I deficient galaxies as compared to previously studied galaxy groups. These H I deficient galaxies are not found at the centre of the group. We find that galaxies in the Eridanus supergroup do not follow the general trend of the atomic gas fraction versus stellar mass scaling relation, which indicates that the scaling relation changes with environmental density. In general, the majority of these galaxies are actively forming stars

    Outcome of neuropsychiatric symptoms related to an antiretroviral drug following its substitution by nevirapine: the RELAX study

    Objectives: The primary objective was to evaluate the improvement in neuropsychiatric symptoms attributed to an antiretroviral drug after that drug was substituted with nevirapine. The secondary objective was to evaluate the impact on patient adherence and quality of life. Methods: A prospective, observational study was carried out that included patients with HIV-1 plasma suppression for whom an antiretroviral drug was substituted with nevirapine because of central nervous system (CNS) side effects, a Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score > 5 or a Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) score ≥ 10, and who had not initiated psychoactive drug treatment during the prior 6 weeks. Evaluations were carried out at baseline and 1 and 3 months after the switch using the PSQI, HADS, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Medical Outcomes Study-Short Form 30 items (MOS-SF-30) and Simplified Medication Adherence Questionnaire (SMAQ). Results: A total of 129 patients were included in the study. The drug substituted was mainly efavirenz (89.9%), and reasons for the switch included sleep disturbances (75.2%), anxiety (65.1%), depression (38.7%), attention disturbances (31%), and other reasons (31%), with a mean of 2.4 neuropsychiatric disturbances per patient. A statistically significant improvement was observed in all the tests evaluating neuropsychiatric symptoms and adherence at 1 and 3 months. The CD4 lymphocyte count remained stable (P = 0.096). Three (2.3%) patients had a detectable plasma HIV-1 RNA at the end of the study. Nine patients (6.9%) withdrew because of nevirapine-related toxicity (rash in seven patients and hypertransaminasaemia in two patients, none of which were > grade 2). Conclusions: The switch to nevirapine from a drug causing neuropsychiatric disturbances (primarily efavirenz) in subjects with virological suppression was effective in resolving those disturbances, with an improvement in all the parameters studied.     WALLABY – An SKA Pathfinder HiSurvey

    The Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (WALLABY) is a next-generation survey of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the Local Universe. It uses the widefield, high-resolution capability of the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), a radio interferometer consisting of 36 x 12-m dishes equipped with Phased-Array Feeds (PAFs), located in an extremely radio-quiet zone in Western Australia. WALLABY aims to survey three-quarters of the sky (-90 degr \u3c Dec \u3c +30 degr) to a redshift of z \u3c 0.26, and generate spectral line image cubes at ~30 arcsec resolution and ~1.6 mJy/beam per 4 km/s channel sensitivity. ASKAP\u27s instantaneous field of view at 1.4 GHz, delivered by the PAF\u27s 36 beams, is about 30 sq deg. At an integrated signal-to-noise ratio of five, WALLABY is expected to detect over half a million galaxies with a mean redshift of z ~ 0.05 (~200 Mpc). The scientific goals of WALLABY include: (a) a census of gas-rich galaxies in the vicinity of the Local Group; (b) a study of the HI properties of galaxies, groups and clusters, in particular the influence of the environment on galaxy evolution; and (c) the refinement of cosmological parameters using the spatial and redshift distribution of low-bias gas-rich galaxies. For context we provide an overview of previous large-scale HI surveys. Combined with existing and new multi-wavelength sky surveys, WALLABY will enable an exciting new generation of panchromatic studies of the Local Universe. - First results from the WALLABY pilot survey are revealed, with initial data products publicly available in the CSIRO ASKAP Science Data Archive (CASDA)

    WALLABY pre-pilot survey: ultra-diffuse galaxies in the Eridanus supergroup

    We present a pilot study of the atomic neutral hydrogen gas (H I) content of ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates. In this paper, we use the pre-pilot Eridanus field data from the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey to search for H I in UDG candidates found in the Systematically Measuring Ultra-diffuse Galaxies survey (SMUDGes). We narrow down to 78 SMUDGes UDG candidates within the maximum radial extents of the Eridanus subgroups for this study. Most SMUDGes UDGs candidates in this study have effective radii smaller than 1.5 kpc and thus fail to meet the defining size threshold. We only find one H I detection, which we classify as a low-surface-brightness dwarf. Six putative UDGs are H I-free. We show the overall distribution of SMUDGes UDG candidates on the size–luminosity relation and compare them with low-mass dwarfs on the atomic gas fraction versus stellar mass scaling relation. There is no correlation between gas-richness and colour indicating that colour is not the sole parameter determining their H I content. The evolutionary paths that drive galaxy morphological changes and UDG formation channels are likely the additional factors to affect the H I content of putative UDGs. The actual numbers of UDGs for the Eridanus and NGC 1332 subgroups are consistent with the predicted abundance of UDGs and the halo virial mass relation, except for the NGC 1407 subgroup, which has a smaller number of UDGs than the predicted number. Different group environments suggest that these putative UDGs are likely formed via the satellite accretion scenario. © 2023 The Author(s).     WALLABY early science − V. ASKAP HI imaging of the Lyon Group of Galaxies 351

    We present an HI study of the galaxy group LGG 351 usingWidefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY) early science data observed with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). LGG 351 resides behind the M 83 group at a velocity range (cz) of ∼3500–4800 km s−1 within the rich Hydra-Centaurus overdensity region. We detect 40 sources with the discovery of a tidally interacting galaxy pair and two new HI sources that are not presented in previous optical catalogues. 23 out of 40 sources have new redshifts derived from the new HI data. This study is the largest WALLABY sub-sample to date and also allows us to further validate the performance of ASKAP and the data reduction pipeline ASKAPSOFT. Extended HI emission is seen in six galaxies indicating interaction within the group, although no HI debris is found. We also detect HI in a known ultra-faint dwarf galaxy (dw 1328−29), which demonstrates that it is not a satellite of the M 83 group as previously thought. In conjunction with multiwavelength data, we find that our galaxies follow the atomic gas fraction and baryonic Tully–Fisher scaling relations derived from the GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey. In addition, majority of our galaxies fall within the star formationmain sequence indicating inefficiency of gas removal processes in this loose galaxy group

    Lewis x (Lex, CD15), also known as SSEA-1 (stage specific embryonic antigen-1), is a trisaccharide with the structure Galβ(1–4)Fucα(1–3)GlcNAc, which is expressed on glycoconjugates in human polymorphonuclear granulocytes and various tumors such as colon and breast carcinoma. We have investigated the role of Lex in the adhesion of MCF-7 human breast cancer cells and PMN to human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVEC) and the effects of two different anti-Lex mAbs (FC-2.15 and MCS-1) on this adhesion. We also analyzed the cytolysis of Lex+-cells induced by anti-Lex mAbs and complement when cells were adhered to the endothelium, and the effect of these antibodies on HUVEC. The results indicate that MCF-7 cells can bind to HUVEC, and that MCS-1 but not FC-2.15 mAb inhibit this interaction. Both mAbs can efficiently lyse MCF-7 cells bound to HUVEC in the presence of complement without damaging endothelial cells. We also found a Lex-dependent PMN interaction with HUVEC. Although both anti-Lex mAbs lysed PMN in suspension and adhered to HUVEC, PMN aggregation was only induced by mAb FC-2.15. Blotting studies revealed that the endothelial scavenger receptor C-type lectin (SRCL), which binds Lex-trisaccharide, interacts with specific glycoproteins of Mr␣∼␣28 kD and 10 kD from MCF-7 cells.
