    Shuttle STS-2 mission communication systems RF coverage and performance predictions. Volume 1: Ascent

    The RF communications capabilities and nominally expected performance for the ascent phase of the second orbital flight of the shuttle are provided. Predicted performance is given mainly in the form of plots of signal strength versus elapsed mission time for the STDN (downlink) and shuttle orbiter (uplink) receivers for the S-band PM and FM, and UHF systems. Performance of the NAV and landing RF systems is treated for RTLS abort, since in this case the spacecraft will loop around and return to the launch site. NAV and landing RF systems include TACAN, MSBLS, and C-band altimeter. Signal strength plots were produced by a computer program which combines the spacecraft trajectory, antenna patterns, transmit and receive performance characteristics, and system mathematical models. When available, measured spacecraft parameters were used in the predictions; otherwise, specified values were used. Specified ground station parameter values were also used. Thresholds and other criteria on the graphs are explained

    Particle mass yield in secondary organic aerosol formed by the dark ozonolysis of α-pinene

    The yield of particle mass in secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed by dark ozonolysis was measured for 0.3–22.8 ppbv of reacted α-pinene. Most experiments were conducted using a continuous-flow chamber, allowing nearly constant SOA concentration and chemical composition for several days. For comparison, some experiments were also conducted in batch mode. Reaction conditions were 25°C, 40% RH, dry (NH<sub>4</sub>)SO<sub>4</sub> seed particles, and excess 1-butanol. The organic particle loading was independently measured by an aerosol mass spectrometer and a scanning mobility particle sizer, and the two measurements agreed well. The observations showed that SOA formation occurred for even the lowest reacted α-pinene concentration of 0.3 ppbv. The particle mass yield was 0.09 at 0.15 μg m<sup>−3</sup>, increasing to 0.27 at 40 μg m<sup>−3</sup>. Compared to some results reported in the literature, the yields were 80 to 100% larger for loadings above 2 μg m<sup>−3</sup>. At lower loadings, the yields had an offset of approximately +0.07 from those reported in the literature. To as low as 0.15 μm<sup>−3</sup>, the yield curve had no inflection point toward null yield, implying the formation of one or several products having vapor pressures below this value. These observations of increased yields, especially for low loadings, are potentially important for accurate prediction by chemical transport models of organic particle concentrations in the ambient atmosphere

    Hard exclusive photoproduction of Φ\Phi mesons

    We calculate the differential cross section and single-polarization observables for the reaction γpΦp\gamma p \to \Phi p within perturbative QCD, treating the proton as a quark-diquark system. The phenomenological couplings of gauge bosons to (spatially extended) diquarks and the quark-diquark distribution amplitude of the proton are adopted from previous investigations of baryon form factors and two-photon processes. Going beyond leading order, we take into account hadron-mass effects by means of a systematic expansion in the small parameter (hadron mass/ photon energy). With the Φ\Phi-meson distribution amplitude taken from the literature our predictions for the differential cross section at | t | \agt 4 \text{GeV}^2 seem to provide a reasonable extrapolation of the low-t data and are also comparable in magnitude with the results of a two-gluon exchange model in which the gluons are considered as a remnant of the pomeron.     Dilepton production by bremsstrahlung of meson fields in nuclear collisions

    We study the bremsstrahlung of virtual omega mesons due to the collective deceleration of nuclei at the initial stage of an ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collision. It is shown that electromagnetic decays of these mesons may give an important contribution to the observed yields of dileptons. Mass spectra of positron-electron and muon pairs produced in central Au+Au collisions are calculated under some simplifying assumptions on the space-time variation of the baryonic current in a nuclear collision process. Comparison with the CERES data for 160 AGev Pb+Au collisions shows that the proposed mechanism gives a noticeable fraction of the observed lepton pairs in the intermediate region of invariant masses. Sensitivity of the dilepton yield to the in-medium modification of masses and widths of vector mesons is demonstrated.Comment: 14 page

    Ratio of Hadronic Decay Rates of J\psi and \psi(2S) and the \rho\pi Puzzle

    The so-called \rho\pi puzzle of J\psi and \psi(2S) decays is examined using the experimental data available to date. Two different approaches were taken to estimate the ratio of J\psi and \psi(2S) hadronic decay rates. While one of the estimates could not yield the exact ratio of \psi(2S) to J\psi inclusive hadronic decay rates, the other, based on a computation of the inclusive ggg decay rate for \psi(2S) (J\psi) by subtracting other decay rates from the total decay rate, differs by two standard deviations from the naive prediction of perturbative QCD, even though its central value is nearly twice as large as what was naively expected. A comparison between this ratio, upon making corrections for specific exclusive two-body decay modes, and the corresponding experimental data confirms the puzzles in J\psi and \psi(2S) decays. We find from our analysis that the exclusively reconstructed hadronic decays of the \psi(2S) account for only a small fraction of its total decays, and a ratio exceeding the above estimate should be expected to occur for a considerable number of the remaining decay channels. We also show that the recent new results from the BES experiment provide crucial tests of various theoretical models proposed to explain the puzzle.Comment: 8 pages, no figure, 4 table

    Large corrections to asymptotic FηcγF_{\eta_c \gamma} and FηbγF_{\eta_b \gamma} in the light-cone perturbative QCD

    The large-Q2Q^2 behavior of ηc\eta_c-γ\gamma and ηb\eta_b-γ\gamma transition form factors, Fηcγ(Q2)F_{\eta_c\gamma}(Q^2) and Fηbγ(Q2)F_{\eta_b\gamma}(Q^2) are analyzed in the framework of light-cone perturbative QCD with the heavy quark (cc and bb) mass effect, the parton's transverse momentum dependence and the higher helicity components in the light-cone wave function are respected. It is pointed out that the quark mass effect brings significant modifications to the asymptotic predictions of the transition form factors in a rather broad energy region, and this modification is much severer for Fηbγ(Q2)F_{\eta_b\gamma}(Q^2) than that for Fηcγ(Q2)F_{\eta_c\gamma}(Q^2) due to the bb-quark being heavier than the cc-quark. The parton's transverse momentum and the higher helicity components are another two factors which decrease the perturbative predictions. For the transition form factor Fηcγ(Q2)F_{\eta_c\gamma}(Q^2), they bring sizable corrections in the present experimentally accessible energy region (Q210GeV2Q^2 \leq 10 GeV^2). For the transition form factor Fηbγ(Q2)F_{\eta_b\gamma}(Q^2), the corrections coming from these two factors are negligible since the bb-quark mass is much larger than the parton's average transverse momentum. The coming e+ee^+ e^- collider (LEP2) will provide the opportunity to examine these theoretical predictions.Comment: 8 pages, RevTex, 5 PostScript figure

    Probing the Rho Spectral Function in Hot and Dense Nuclear Matter by Dileptons

    We present a dynamical study of e+ee^+e^- and μ+μ\mu^+ \mu^- production in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at CERN-SPS energies on the basis of the covariant transport approach HSD employing a momentum-dependent ρ\rho-meson spectral function that includes the pion modifications in the nuclear medium as well as the polarization of the ρ\rho-meson due to resonant ρ\rhoN-N scattering. We find that the experimental data from the CERES and HELIOS-3 Collaborations can be described equally well as within the dropping ρ\rho-mass scenario. Whereas corresponding dilepton qTq_T-spectra are found to be very similar, the inclusive dilepton yield in the invariant mass range 0.85M1.00.85 \leq M \leq 1.0 GeV should allow to disentangle the two scenarios experimentally.Comment: 13 pages RevTeX slightly revised, 6 eps-figure

    Generalized dipole polarizabilities and the spatial structure of hadrons

    We present a phenomenological discussion of spin-independent, generalized dipole polarizabilities of hadrons entering the virtual Compton scattering process gamma* h -> gamma h. We introduce a new method of obtaining a tensor basis with appropriate Lorentz-invariant amplitudes which are free from kinematical singularities and constraints. We then motivate a gauge-invariant separation into a generalized Born term containing ground-state properties only, and a residual contribution describing the model-dependent internal structure. The generalized dipole polarizabilities are defined in terms of Lorentz-invariant residual amplitudes. Particular emphasis is laid on a physical interpretation of these quantities as characterizing the spatial distributions of the induced electric polarization and magnetization of hadrons. It is argued that three dipole polarizabilities, namely the longitudinal electric alpha_L(q^2), the transverse electric alpha_T(q^2), and the magnetic beta(q^2) ones are required in order to fully reconstruct local polarizations induced by soft external fields in a hadron. One of these polarizabilities, alpha_T(q^2), describes an effect of higher order in the soft final-photon momentum q'. We argue that the associated spatial distributions obtained via the Fourier transforms in the Breit frame are meaningful even for such a light particle as the pion. The spatial distributions are determined at large distances r ~ 1/m_pi for pions, kaons, and octet baryons by use of ChPT.Comment: 41 pages, 5 figures, RevTex fil

    Dilepton production in proton-proton collisions at BEVALAC energies

    The dilepton production in elementary ppe+eX{pp\to e^{+}e^{-}X} reactions at BEVALAC energies Tlab=1÷5T_{lab}=1\div 5 GeV is investigated. The calculations include direct e+e{e^{+}e^{-}} decays of the vector mesons ρ0\rho ^{0}, ω\omega , and ϕ\phi , Dalitz decays of the π0\pi ^{0}-, η\eta -, % \rho -, ω\omega -, and ϕ\phi -mesons, and of the baryon resonances % \Delta (1232),N(1520), ...... . The subthreshold vector meson production cross sections in pppp collisions are treated in a way sufficient to avoid double counting with the inclusive vector meson production. The vector meson dominance model for the transition form factors of the resonance Dalitz decays Re+eNR\to e^{+}e^{-}N is used in an extended form to ensure correct asymptotics which are in agreement with the quark counting rules. Such a modification gives an unified and consistent description of both RNγR\to N\gamma radiative decays and RNρ(ω)R\to N\rho (\omega) meson decays. The effect of multiple pion production on the experimental efficiency for the detection of the dilepton pairs is studied. We find the dilepton yield in reasonable agreement with the experimental data for the set of intermediate energies whereas at the highest energy Tlab=4.88T_{lab}=4.88 GeV the number of dilepton pairs is likely to be overestimated experimentally in the mass range M=300÷700M=300\div 700 MeV.Comment: 25 pages (IOP style), 5 figures, revised manuscript accepted for publication in JP
