Long-term CF6 engine performance deterioration: Evaluation of engine S/N 451-479
The performance testing and analytical teardown of CF6-6D engine is summarized. This engine had completed its initial installation on DC-10 aircraft. The investigative test program was conducted inbound prior to normal overhaul/refurbishment. The performance testing included an inbound test, a test following cleaning of the low pressure turbine airfoils, and a final test after leading edge rework and cleaning the stage one fan blades. The analytical teardown consisted of detailed disassembly inspection measurements and airfoil surface finish checks of the as received deteriorated hardware. Included in this report is a detailed analysis of the test cell performance data, a complete analytical teardown report with a detailed description of all observed hardware distress, and an analytical assessment of the performance loss (deterioration) relating measured hardware conditions to losses in both SFC (specific fuel consumption) and EGT (exhaust gas temperature)
Mixed Symmetry Solutions of Generalized Three-Particle Bargmann-Wigner Equations in the Strong-Coupling Limit
Starting from a nonlinear isospinor-spinor field equation, generalized
three-particle Bargmann-Wigner equations are derived. In the strong-coupling
limit, a special class of spin 1/2 bound-states are calculated. These solutions
which are antisymmetric with respect to all indices, have mixed symmetries in
isospin-superspin space and in spin orbit space. As a consequence of this mixed
symmetry, we get three solution manifolds. In appendix \ref{b}, table 2, these
solution manifolds are interpreted as the three generations of leptons and
quarks. This interpretation will be justified in a forthcoming paper.Comment: 17 page
Spherical Orbifolds for Cosmic Topology
Harmonic analysis is a tool to infer cosmic topology from the measured
astrophysical cosmic microwave background CMB radiation. For overall positive
curvature, Platonic spherical manifolds are candidates for this analysis. We
combine the specific point symmetry of the Platonic manifolds with their deck
transformations. This analysis in topology leads from manifolds to orbifolds.
We discuss the deck transformations of the orbifolds and give eigenmodes for
the harmonic analysis as linear combinations of Wigner polynomials on the
3-sphere. These provide new tools for detecting cosmic topology from the CMB
radiation.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with

Measuring the impact of observations on the predictability of the Kuroshio Extension in a shallow-water model
In this paper sequential importance sampling is used to assess the impact of observations on a ensemble prediction for the decadal path transitions of the Kuroshio Extension (KE). This particle filtering approach gives access to the probability density of the state vector, which allows us to determine the predictive power — an entropy based measure — of the ensemble prediction. The proposed set-up makes use of an ensemble that, at each time, samples the climatological probability distribution. Then, in a post-processing step, the impact of different sets of observations is measured by the increase in predictive power of the ensemble over the climatological signal during one-year. The method is applied in an identical-twin
experiment for the Kuroshio Extension using a reduced-gravity shallow water model. We investigate the impact of assimilating velocity observations from different locations during the elongated and the contracted meandering state of the KE. Optimal observations location correspond to regions with strong potential vorticity gradients. For the elongated state the optimal location is in the first meander of the KE. During the contracted state of the KE it is located south of Japan, where the Kuroshio separates from the coast
CF6-6D engine short-term performance deterioration
Studies conducted as part of the NASA-Lewis CF6 jet engine diagnostics program are summarized. An 82-engine sample of DC-10-10 aircraft engine checkout data that were gathered to define the extent and magnitude of CF6-6D short term performance deterioration were analyzed. These data are substantiated by the performance testing and analytical teardown of CF6-6D short term deterioration engine serial number (ESN) 451507
CF6-6D engine performance deterioration
Cruise cockpit recordings and test cell performance data in conjunction with hardware inspection data from airline overhaul shops were analyzed to define the extent and magnitude of performance deterioration of the General Electric CF6-6D model engine. These studies successfully isolated short-term deterioration from the longer term, and defined areas where a significant reduction in aircraft energy requirements for the 1980's can be realized. Unrestored losses which remain after engine refurbishment represent over 70% of the loss at engine shop visit. Sixty-three percent of the unrestored losses are cost-effective to restore which could reduce fuel consumed by CF6-6D engines in 1980 by 10.9 million gallons
The Gravitational and Electrostatic Fields Far from an Isolated Einstein-Maxwell Source
The exterior solution for an arbitrary charged, massive source, is studied as
a static deviation from the Reissner-Nordstr\o m metric. This is reduced to two
coupled ordinary differential equations for the gravitational and electrostatic
potential functions. The homogeneous equations are explicitly solved in the
particular case , obtaining a multipole expansion with radial
hypergeometric dependence for both potentials. In the limiting case of a
neutral source, the equations are shown to coincide with recent results by
Bondi and Rindler.Comment: 11 pages, revTe
The magnetic field at milliarcsecond resolution around IRAS20126+4104
IRAS20126+4104 is a well studied B0.5 protostar that is surrounded by a ~1000
au Keplerian disk and is where a large-scale outflow originates. Both 6.7-GHz
CH3OH masers and 22-GHz H2O masers have been detected toward this young stellar
object. The CH3OH masers trace the Keplerian disk, while the H2O masers are
associated with the surface of the conical jet. Recently, observations of dust
polarized emission (350 um) at an angular resolution of 9 arcseconds (~15000
au) have revealed an S-shaped morphology of the magnetic field around
IRAS20126+4104. The observations of polarized maser emissions at milliarcsecond
resolution (~20 au) can make a crucial contribution to understanding the
orientation of the magnetic field close to IRAS20126+4104. This will allow us
to determine whether the magnetic field morphology changes from arcsecond
resolution to milliarcsecond resolution. The European VLBI Network was used to
measure the linear polarization and the Zeeman splitting of the 6.7-GHz CH3OH
masers toward IRAS20126+4104. The NRAO Very Long Baseline Array was used to
measure the linear polarization and the Zeeman splitting of the 22-GHz H2O
masers toward the same region. We detected 26 CH3OH masers and 5 H2O masers at
high angular resolution. Linear polarization emission was observed toward three
CH3OH masers and toward one H2O maser. Significant Zeeman splitting was
measured in one CH3OH maser (\Delta V_{Z}=-9.2 +/- 1.4 m/s). No significant (5
sigma) magnetic field strength was measured using the H2O masers. We found that
in IRAS20126+4104 the rotational energy is less than the magnetic energy.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysic
EVN observations of 6.7-GHz methanol maser polarization in massive star-forming regions II. First statistical results
Magnetic fields have only recently been included in theoretical simulations
of high-mass star formation. The simulations show that magnetic fields play an
important role in the formation and dynamics of molecular outflows. Masers, in
particular 6.7-GHz CH3OH masers, are the best probes of the magnetic field
morphologies around massive young stellar objects on the smallest scales of
10-100 AU. This paper focuses on 4 massive young stellar objects,
IRAS06058+2138-NIRS1, IRAS22272+6358A, S255-IR, and S231, which complement our
previous 2012 sample (the first EVN group). From all these sources, molecular
outflows have been detected in the past. Seven of the European VLBI Network
antennas were used to measure the linear polarization and Zeeman-splitting of
the 6.7-GHz CH3OH masers in the star-forming regions in this second EVN group.
We detected a total of 128 CH3OH masing cloudlets. Fractional linear
polarization (0.8%-11.3%) was detected towards 18% of the CH3OH masers in our
sample. The linear polarization vectors are well ordered in all the massive
young stellar objects. We measured significant Zeeman-splitting in
IRAS06058+2138-NIRS1 (DVz=3.8+/-0.6 m/s) and S255-IR (DVz=3.2+/-0.7 m/s). By
considering the 20 massive young stellar objects towards which the morphology
of magnetic fields was determined by observing 6.7-GHz CH3OH masers in both
hemispheres, we find no evident correlation between the linear distributions of
CH3OH masers and the outflows or the linear polarization vectors. On the other
hand, we present first statistical evidence that the magnetic field (on scales
10-100 AU) is primarily oriented along the large-scale outflow direction.
Moreover, we empirically find that the linear polarization fraction of
unsaturated CH3OH masers is P_l<4.5%.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysic
Preparation Of Gas Separation Membranes By Plasma Polymerization With Fluoro Compounds
Plasma polymerization coatings were applied for the preparation of gas separation membranes. Mainly fluoro compounds were used as coating materials. The membranes showed good separation characteristics with high flux for gaseous systems. The plasma polymerization composite parameter given by W/FM plays an important role in obtaining excellent separation characteristics. The correlation between the conversion rate DR/FM, where DR is the deposition rate of plasma polymer, and W/FM is useful to consider the plasma polymer character under the different plasma polymerization conditions (discharge power W and monomer flow rate F). The proper conditions for membrane preparation lie in the intermediate region between the region in which the monomer flow rate is deficient and that in which the discharge power is deficient. Furthermore, the plasma polymerization coatings with the higher molecular weight monomer gave the higher separation characteristics. Plasma polymer composite membranes in this study showed superiority for the molecular sieve type of separation over the solution-diffusion type of separation. © 1984
