    In het voorjaar van 1986 is de Geneeskundige Inspectie voor de Geestelijke Volksgezondheid (GIGV) een onderzoek gestart naar ervaringen van patienten met elektroconvulsie-therapie (ECT). Dit onderzoek werd in 1991 afgesloten met een rapport (GIGV, 1991). De aanleiding tot dat onderzoek was dat ECT vragen opriep omtrent de medische en ethische aanvaardbaarheid ervan. Daarom is in de jaren '70 door de toenmalige Staatssecretaris een advies over ECT gevraagd aan de Gezondheidsraad. Ret adviesrapport verscheen in 1983 en bevatte, naast een uitvoerige literatuurstudie, aanbevelingen voor de toepassing van ECT (Gezondheidsraad, 1983). Naar aanleiding van deze aanbevelingen zijn door de GIGV in 1985 richtlijnen geformuleerd voor de praktijk van ECT. Daarin waren zowel criteria opgenomen ten aanzien van de instellingen waar ECT werd toegepast als ten aanzien van de toepassingen zelf en het indicatiegebied. Sedert 1985 wordt door de GIGV een registratie bijgehouden van alle toepassingen die met ECT in ons land plaatsvinden. De gegevens daaruit worden jaarlijks gepubliceerd (GIGV, 1986 t/m 1991)

    Nocturnal foraging lifts time-constraints in winter for migratory geese but hardly speeds up fueling

    Climate warming advances the optimal timing of breeding for many animals. For migrants to start breeding earlier, a concurrent advancement of migration is required, including premigratory fueling of energy reserves. We investigate whether barnacle geese are time constrained during premigratory fueling and whether there is potential to advance or shorten the fueling period to allow an earlier migratory departure. We equipped barnacle geese with GPS trackers and accelerometers to remotely record birds’ behavior, from which we calculated time budgets. We examined how time spent foraging was affected by the available time (during daylight and moonlit nights) and thermoregulation costs. We used an energetic model to assess onset and rates of fueling and whether geese can further advance fueling by extending foraging time. We show that, during winter, when facing higher thermoregulation costs, geese consistently foraged at night, especially during moonlit nights, in order to balance their energy budgets. In spring, birds made use of the increasing day length and gained body stores by foraging longer during the day, but birds stopped foraging extensively during the night. Our model indicates that, by continuing nighttime foraging throughout spring, geese may have some leeway to advance and increase fueling rate, potentially reaching departure body mass 4 days earlier. In light of rapid climatic changes on the breeding grounds, whether this advancement can be realized and whether it will be sufficient to prevent phenological mismatches remains to be determined

    Bolgewassen kunnen tijdens de teelt en de bewaring worden aangetast door verschillende ziekten en plagen. De huidige bestrijding van de zieken en plagen wordt uitgevoerd met fungiciden en insecticiden. Voor bestrijding van bacteriën wordt een contactmiddel (Formaline) ingezet. Bij de uitvoering van warmwaterbaden (ter bestrijding van nematoden) en bij de ontsmetting in dompelbaden kan het proceswater besmet raken met schimmelsporen van zieke bollen. De sporen en bacteriën kunnen door middel van verspreiding in het proceswater gezonde bollen besmetten. Om te voorkomen dat bollen besmet raken met bacteriën en schimmelsporen werden in dit onderzoek contactmiddelen (zogenaamde reinigingsmiddelen) onderling vergeleken op hun bestrijdende werking

    Renormalized Path Integral for the Two-Dimensional Delta-Function Interaction

    A path-integral approach for delta-function potentials is presented. Particular attention is paid to the two-dimensional case, which illustrates the realization of a quantum anomaly for a scale invariant problem in quantum mechanics. Our treatment is based on an infinite summation of perturbation theory that captures the nonperturbative nature of the delta-function bound state. The well-known singular character of the two-dimensional delta-function potential is dealt with by considering the renormalized path integral resulting from a variety of schemes: dimensional, momentum-cutoff, and real-space regularization. Moreover, compatibility of the bound-state and scattering sectors is shown.Comment: 26 pages.     Aqueous Methanol Extracts of Cochlospermum tinctorium (A. Rich) Possess Analgesic and Anti-inflammatory Activities

    Cochlopermum tinctorium A. Rich. (Cochlospermaceae) is a commonly used medicinal plant in the West Africa sub-region for the management of various conditions including pain and inflammatory conditions. In the present study, we report the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of the aqueous methanol leaf (20–80 mg/kg), root (7.5–30 mg/kg), and root bark (20–80 mg/kg) extracts of the plant. The analgesic potentials of the extracts were studied using acetic acid induced writhing and hot plate tests in mice while the anti-inflammatory activity was investigated using carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats.The extracts significantly and dose dependently inhibited the acetic acid-induced writhing in mice. However, the highest protection against writhing was produced by aqueous methanol leaf extract at the dose of 80 mg/kg (96.65%) which even was greater than that of the standard agent, ketoprofen (82.30%). The extracts did not significantly increase mean latency of response in the hot plate test. However, aqueous methanol root bark extract at the dose of 20 mg/kg significantly (P < 0.05) increased the mean latency of pain response. While the extracts of the root and root bark extracts of the plant afforded non dose-dependent protection against carrageenan-induced edema, the aqueous methanol leaf extract significantly and dose-dependently inhibited carrageenan-induced hind paw edema at the end of the third hour.The present study suggests that the aqueous methanol leaf, root, and root bark extracts of Cochlopermum tinctorium possess analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities which lend some credence to the ethnomedical claim of the use of the plant in the management of pain and inflammatory conditions

    Quality of life gains in frail and intermediate-fit patients with multiple Myeloma:Findings from the prospective HOVON123 clinical trial

    Background: Frailty in newly-diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) patients is associated with treatment-related toxicity, which negatively affects health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Currently, data on changes in HRQoL of frail and intermediate-fit MM patients during active treatment and post-treatment follow-up are absent. Methods: The HOVON123 study (NTR4244) was a phase II trial in which NDMM patients ≥ 75 years were treated with nine dose-adjusted cycles of Melphalan-Prednisone-Bortezomib (MPV). Two HRQoL instruments (EORTC QLQ-C30 and -MY20) were obtained before start of treatment, after 3 and 9 months of treatment and 6 and 12 months after treatment for patients who did not yet start second-line treatment. HRQoL changes and/or differences in frail and intermediate-fit patients (IMWG frailty score) were reported only when both statistically significant (p &lt; 0.005) and clinically relevant (&gt;MID). Results: 137 frail and 71 intermediate-fit patients were included in the analysis. Compliance was high and comparable in both groups. At baseline, frail patients reported lower global health status, lower physical functioning scores and more fatigue and pain compared to intermediate-fit patients. Both groups improved in global health status and future perspective; polyneuropathy complaints worsened over time. Frail patients improved over time in physical functioning, fatigue and pain. Improvement in global health status occurred earlier than in intermediate-fit patients. Conclusion: HRQoL improved during anti-myeloma treatment in both intermediate-fit and frail MM patients. In frail patients, improvement occurred faster and, in more domains, which was retained during follow-up. This implies that physicians should not withhold safe and effective therapies from frail patients in fear of HRQoL deterioration.</p

    A screening-based approach identifies cell cycle regulators AURKA, CHK1 and PLK1 as targetable regulators of chondrosarcoma cell survival

    Chondrosarcomas are malignant cartilage tumors that are relatively resistant towards conventional therapeuticapproaches. Kinase inhibitors have been investigated and shown successful for several different cancer types. Inthis study we aimed at identifying kinase inhibitors that inhibit the survival of chondrosarcoma cells and therebyserve as new potential therapeutic strategies to treat chondrosarcoma patients.An siRNA screen targeting 779 different kinases was conducted in JJ012 chondrosarcoma cells in parallelwith a compound screen consisting of 273 kinase inhibitors in JJ012, SW1353 and CH2879 chondrosarcoma celllines. AURKA, CHK1 and PLK1 were identified as most promising targets and validated further in a morecomprehensive panel of chondrosarcoma cell lines. Dose response curves were performed using tyrosine kinaseinhibitors: MK-5108 (AURKA), LY2603618 (CHK1) and Volasertib (PLK1) using viability assays and cell cycleanalysis. Apoptosis was measured at 24 h after treatment using a caspase 3/7 assay. Finally, chondrosarcomapatient samples (N = =34) were used to examine the correlation between AURKA, CHK1 and PLK1 RNAexpression and documented patient survival.Dose dependent decreases in viability were observed in chondrosarcoma cell lines after treatment with MK-5108, LY2603618 and volasertib, with cell lines showing highest sensitivity to PLK1 inhibition. In additionincreased sensitivity to conventional chemotherapy was observed after CHK1 inhibition in a subset of the celllines. Interestingly, whereas AURKA and CHK1 were both expressed in chondrosarcoma patient samples, PLK1expression was found to be low compared to normal cartilage. Analysis of patient samples revealed that highCHK1 RNA expression correlated with a worse overall survival.AURKA, CHK1 and PLK1 are identified as important survival genes in chondrosarcoma cell lines. Althoughfurther research is needed to validate these findings, inhibiting CHK1 seems to be the most promising potentialtherapeutic target for patients with chondrosarcoma.Toxicolog
