    Nimbus 6 Doppler processing using the Fairbanks calibration platform

    A weighted least squares processor is examined. Research conducted in support of the NASA satellite aided Search and Rescue program is presented. An estimated NIMBUS 6 ephemeris, accurate to 1.5-2.5 km and 0.5-2.5 m/s relative to a reference orbit, is obtained during the three day signal transmission period. This suggests updating the knowledge of the relay satellite ephemeris by one reference beacon is needed during the Search and Rescue demonstration

    The 'gated-diode' configuration in MOSFET's, a sensitive tool for characterizing hot-carrier degradation

    This paper describes a new measurement technique, the forward gated-diode current characterized at low drain voltages to be applied in MOSFET's for investigating hot-carrier stress-induced defects at high spatial resolution. The generation/recombination current in the drain-to-substrate diode as a function of gate voltage, combined with two-dimensional numerical simulation, provides a sensitive tool for detecting the spatial distribution and density of interface defects. In the case of strong accumulation, additional information is obtained from interband tunneling processes occurring via interface defects. The various mechanisms for generating interface defects and fixed charges at variable stress conditions are discussed, showing that information complementary to that available from other methods is obtaine

The InSb material characteristics are described along with mask and process modifications. Test results for the 2- and 20-element CCIRID's are discussed, including gate oxide characteristics, charge transfer efficiency, optical mode of operation, and development of the surface potential diagram

    Interaction-assisted propagation of Coulomb-correlated electron-hole pairs in disordered semiconductors

    A two-band model of a disordered semiconductor is used to analyze dynamical interaction induced weakening of localization in a system that is accessible to experimental verification. The results show a dependence on the sign of the two-particle interaction and on the optical excitation energy of the Coulomb-correlated electron-hole pair.Comment: 4 pages and 3 ps figure

    On the Number of Facets of Three-Dimensional Dirichlet Stereohedra III: Full Cubic Groups

    We are interested in the maximum possible number of facets that Dirichlet stereohedra for three-dimensional crystallographic groups can have. The problem for non-cubic groups was studied in previous papers by D. Bochis and the second author (Discrete Comput. Geom. 25:3 (2001), 419-444, and Beitr. Algebra Geom., 47:1 (2006), 89-120). This paper deals with ''full'' cubic groups, while ''quarter'' cubic groups are left for a subsequent paper. Here, ''full'' and ''quarter'' refers to the recent classification of three-dimensional crystallographic groups by Conway, Delgado-Friedrichs, Huson and Thurston (math.MG/9911185, Beitr. Algebra Geom. 42.2 (2001), 475-507). Our main result in this paper is that Dirichlet stereohedra for any of the 27 full groups cannot have more than 25 facets. We also find stereohedra with 17 facets for one of these groups.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures.     The effect of parallel static and microwave electric fields on excited hydrogen atoms

    Motivated by recent experiments we analyse the classical dynamics of a hydrogen atom in parallel static and microwave electric fields. Using an appropriate representation and averaging approximations we show that resonant ionisation is controlled by a separatrix, and provide necessary conditions for a dynamical resonance to affect the ionisation probability. The position of the dynamical resonance is computed using a high-order perturbation series, and estimate its radius of convergence. We show that the position of the dynamical resonance does not coincide precisely with the ionisation maxima, and that the field switch-on time can dramatically affect the ionisation signal which, for long switch times, reflects the shape of an incipient homoclinic. Similarly, the resonance ionisation time can reflect the time-scale of the separatrix motion, which is therefore longer than conventional static field Stark ionisation.     A double coset ansatz for integrability in AdS/CFT

    We give a proof that the expected counting of strings attached to giant graviton branes in AdS_5 x S^5, as constrained by the Gauss Law, matches the dimension spanned by the expected dual operators in the gauge theory. The counting of string-brane configurations is formulated as a graph counting problem, which can be expressed as the number of points on a double coset involving permutation groups. Fourier transformation on the double coset suggests an ansatz for the diagonalization of the one-loop dilatation operator in this sector of strings attached to giant graviton branes. The ansatz agrees with and extends recent results which have found the dynamics of open string excitations of giants to be given by harmonic oscillators.     A Renormalization Group for Hamiltonians: Numerical Results

    We describe a renormalization group transformation that is related to the breakup of golden invariant tori in Hamiltonian systems with two degrees of freedom. This transformation applies to a large class of Hamiltonians, is conceptually simple, and allows for accurate numerical computations. In a numerical implementation, we find a nontrivial fixed point and determine the corresponding critical index and scaling. Our computed values for various universal constants are in good agreement with existing data for area-preserving maps.     Optimization of Gutzwiller Wavefunctions in Quantum Monte Carlo

    Gutzwiller functions are popular variational wavefunctions for correlated electrons in Hubbard models. Following the variational principle, we are interested in the Gutzwiller parameters that minimize e.g. the expectation value of the energy. Rewriting the expectation value as a rational function in the Gutzwiller parameters, we find a very efficient way for performing that minimization. The method can be used to optimize general Gutzwiller-type wavefunctions both, in variational and in fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo.Comment: 9 pages RevTeX with 10 eps figure

    Observation of Coulomb-Assisted Dipole-Forbidden Intraexciton Transitions in Semiconductors

    We use terahertz pulses to induce resonant transitions between the eigenstates of optically generated exciton populations in a high-quality semiconductor quantum-well sample. Monitoring the excitonic photoluminescence, we observe transient quenching of the 1s1s exciton emission, which we attribute to the terahertz-induced 1s1s-to-2p2p excitation. Simultaneously, a pronounced enhancement of the 2s2s-exciton emission is observed, despite the 1s1s-to-2s2s transition being dipole forbidden. A microscopic many-body theory explains the experimental observations as a Coulomb-scattering mixing of the 2ss and 2pp states, yielding an effective terahertz transition between the 1ss and 2ss populations.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
