Hydrodynamics and suspended sediment transport in the Camboriú estuary - Brazil: pre jetty conditions

Estuarine hydrodynamics is a key factor in the definition of the filtering capacity of an estuary and results from the interaction of the processes that control the inlet morphodynamics and those that are acting in the mixing of the water in the estuary. The hydrodynamics and suspended sediment transport in the Camboriú estuary were assessed by two field campaigns conducted in 1998 that covered both neap and spring tide conditions. The period measured represents the estuarine hydrodynamics and sediment transport prior to the construction of the jetty in 2003 and provides important background information for the Camboriú estuary. Each field campaign covered two complete tidal cycles with hourly measurements of currents, salinity, suspended sediment concentration and water level. Results show that the Camboriú estuary is partially mixed with the vertical structure varying as a function of the tidal range and tidal phase. The dynamic estuarine structure can be balanced between the stabilizing effects generated by the vertical density gradient, which produces buoyancy and stratification flows, and the turbulent effects generated by the vertical velocity gradient that generates vertical mixing. The main sediment source for the water column are the bottom sediments, periodically resuspended by the tidal currents. The advective salt and suspended sediment transport was different between neap and spring tides, being more complex at spring tide. The river discharge term was important under both tidal conditions. The tidal correlation term was also important, being dominant in the suspended sediment transport during the spring tide. The gravitational circulation and Stokes drift played a secondary role in the estuarine transport processes.

Solid helium at high pressure: A path-integral Monte Carlo simulation

Solid helium (3He and 4He) in the hcp and fcc phases has been studied by path-integral Monte Carlo. Simulations were carried out in the isothermal-isobaric (NPT) ensemble at pressures up to 52 GPa. This allows one to study the temperature and pressure dependences of isotopic effects on the crystal volume and vibrational energy in a wide parameter range. The obtained equation of state at room temperature agrees with available experimental data. The kinetic energy, E_k, of solid helium is found to be larger than the vibrational potential energy, E_p. The ratio E_k/E_p amounts to about 1.4 at low pressures, and decreases as the applied pressure is raised, converging to 1, as in a harmonic solid. Results of these simulations have been compared with those yielded by previous path integral simulations in the NVT ensemble. The validity range of earlier approximations is discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

Molar volume of solid isotopic helium mixtures

Solid isotopic helium mixtures have been studied by path-integral Monte Carlo simulations in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble. This method allowed us to study the molar volume as a function of temperature, pressure, and isotopic composition. At 25 K and 0.2 GPa, the relative difference between molar volumes of isotopically-pure crystals of 3He and 4He is found to be about 3%. This difference decreases under pressure, and for 12 GPa it is smaller than 1%. For isotopically-mixed crystals, a linear relation between lattice parameters and concentrations of helium isotopes is found, in agreement with Vegard's law. The virtual crystal approximation, valid for isotopic mixtures of heavier atoms, does not give reliable results for solid solutions of helium isotopes.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

    Physics of Ultra-Peripheral Nuclear Collisions

Moving highly-charged ions carry strong electromagnetic fields that act as a field of photons. In collisions at large impact parameters, hadronic interactions are not possible, and the ions interact through photon-ion and photon-photon collisions known as {\it ultra-peripheral collisions} (UPC). Hadron colliders like the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce photonuclear and two-photon interactions at luminosities and energies beyond that accessible elsewhere; the LHC will reach a γp\gamma p energy ten times that of the Hadron-Electron Ring Accelerator (HERA). Reactions as diverse as the production of anti-hydrogen, photoproduction of the ρ0\rho^0, transmutation of lead into bismuth and excitation of collective nuclear resonances have already been studied. At the LHC, UPCs can study many types of `new physics.'Comment: 47 pages, to appear in Annual Review of Nuclear and Particle Scienc

On Applications of Campbell's Embedding Theorem

A little known theorem due to Campbell is employed to establish the local embedding of a wide class of 4-dimensional spacetimes in 5-dimensional Ricci-flat spaces. An embedding for the class of n-dimensional Einstein spaces is also found. The local nature of Campbell's theorem is highlighted by studying the embedding of some lower-dimensional spaces.Comment: 17 pages, standard Latex sourc

A study was carried out to analyze the factors associated with drug spending by the elderly population in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Data were obtained using a household survey of 667 communitydwelling persons aged 60 years or older conducted in 2003. A Tobit multivariate model was used to analyze factors associated with pharmaceutical expenditures. Data from 590 respondents were used for the analysis. The mean out-of-pocket pharmaceutical expenditure was US$ 38.91. Better sociodemographic conditions, worse health conditions and greater use of health services were associated with out-of-pocket pharmaceutical expenditures by elderly people in Belo Horizonte. The out-of-pocket pharmaceutical expenditures by elderly people were high considering their income level. The factors that influence spending should be considered in the formulation of pharmaceutical policies that improve the health conditions of elderly people.Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire

Age-related transformations make the elderly more susceptible to medicine adverse events, and knowledge of factors associated with drug use are essential to develop national strategies of prescription. To estimate the prevalence of use of antihypertensive and hypoglycemic agents and investigate the factors associated with their consumption. Household survey among 667 elderly living in Belo Horizonte/MG, interviewed regarding socio-demographic indicator of health conditions and medication use. Univariate and multivariate analysis were performed. Among respondents, 62 % used antihypertensive and 12 % hypoglycemic drugs. Consumption of antihypertensive drugs was associated with a higher number of medical appointments, diabetes and hypertension, more cases of morbidity and use ≥ five active substances. Hypoglycemic drugs consumption was associated with male, older age, higher number of medical appointments, the occurrence of diabetes and hypertension. Considering determinants associated with medication use could help develop strategies for the safe medicine use.Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire

Inducing the cosmological constant from five-dimensional Weyl space

We investigate the possibility of inducing the cosmological constant from extra dimensions by embedding our four-dimensional Riemannian space-time into a five-dimensional Weyl integrable space. Following approach of the induced matter theory we show that when we go down from five to four dimensions, the Weyl field may contribute both to the induced energy-tensor as well as to the cosmological constant, or more generally, it may generate a time-dependent cosmological parameter. As an application, we construct a simple cosmological model which has some interesting properties.Comment: 7 page
