    K-8 Teachers\u27 Experiences Instructing Students Diagnosed with ADHD: A Phenomenological Study

    The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of teachers who have experience working with students diagnosed with ADHD in the K-8 public school system in the Mid-Atlantic United States. The problem is that the number of students diagnosed with ADHD is rapidly increasing, and yet, educators are not being provided with the knowledge or the skills to support these students in the classroom (Dort et al., 2020). Due to the large percentage of students diagnosed with ADHD, research is needed to provide insight into what methods are being used by teachers in an inclusive classroom to enhance classroom management and to help these students with their learning. The study’s central question is: What are the lived experiences of K-8 teachers who have experience educating students diagnosed with ADHD? Expectancy Value Theory (EVT) guided the study. The study used a qualitative design, and data was collected in the form of journal prompts, individual interviews, and two focus groups. All data was transcribed, examined, in vivo, open coded, and placed into themes that developed during the research. The findings of the study showed that formal training in ADHD and support techniques for students diagnosed with ADHD is severely lacking. It also revealed how crucial it is for teachers to make a connection with these students to help them to live up to their potential. Finally, medication was shown to be a strong support method that should not be arbitrarily dismissed when given under proper medical supervision

    Detection of blood aspiration in deadly head gunshots comparing postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) and autopsy

    BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to analyze the reliability of postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) versus autopsy in detecting signs of blood aspiration in a distinct group of patients following deadly head, mouth or floor of mouth gunshot injuries. METHODS: In this study, in 41 cases PMCT was compared to autopsy reports, the gold standard of postmortem exams, regarding detection of blood aspiration. PMCT was evaluated for the presence and level of typical signs of blood aspiration in the major airways and lung using a semi-quantitative scale ranging from level 0 (no aspiration) to 3 (significant aspiration) also taking density values of the described potential aspiratory changes into account. RESULTS: Overall, in 29 (70.7%) of 41 enrolled cases PMCT and autopsy revealed the same level of aspiration. A difference of one level between PMCT and autopsy resulted for 5 (12.2%) of the remaining 12 cases. More than one level difference between both methods resulted for 7 cases (17.2%). Autopsy described no signs of aspiration in 10 cases, compared to 31 cases with reported blood aspiration. In contrast, PMCT revealed no signs of blood aspiration in 15 cases whereas 26 cases were rated as positive for signs of aspiration in the major airways. In 18 of these 26 cases considered positive for blood aspiration by autopsy and PMCT, clear signs of aspiration signs were also described bilaterally by both methods. CONCLUSIONS: The presented study provides evidence for the assumption that PMCT seems to be helpful in the detection of blood aspiration in cases of deadly head gunshots. In conclusion, it seems reasonable to suggest performing PMCT additionally to traditional postmortem exams in cases of suspected aspiration to rule out false-negative cases and to possibly allow for a more detailed and rather evidence based examination reconnoitering the cause of death. However, the adequate use of PMCT in this context needs further evaluation and the definition of an objective scale for aspiration detection on PMCT needs to be established in future studies

    Infanticide in Chimpanzees: Taphonomic Case Studies from Gombe

    Objectives We present a study of skeletal damage to four chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) infanticide victims from Gombe National Park, Tanzania. Skeletal analysis may provide insight into the adaptive significance of infanticide by examining whether nutritional benefits sufficiently explain infanticidal behavior. The nutritional hypothesis would be supported if bone survivorship rates and skeletal damage patterns are comparable to those of monkey prey. If not, other explanations, such as the resource competition hypothesis, should be considered. Methods Taphonomic assessment of two chimpanzee infants included description of breakage and surface modification, data on MNE, %MNE, and bone survivorship. Two additional infants were assessed qualitatively. The data were compared to published information on monkey prey. We also undertook a review of published infanticide cases. Results The cases were intercommunity infanticides (one male and three female infants) committed by males. Attackers partially consumed two of the victims. Damage to all four infants included puncture marks and compression fractures to the cranium, crenulated breaks to long bones, and incipient fractures on ribs. Compared to monkey prey, the chimpanzee infants had an abundance of vertebrae and hand/foot bones. Conclusions The cases described here suggest that chimpanzees may not always completely consume infanticide victims, while reports on chimpanzee predation indicated that complete consumption of monkey prey usually occurred. Infanticidal chimpanzees undoubtedly gain nutritional benefits when they consume dead infants, but this benefit may not sufficiently explain infanticide in this species. Continued study of infanticidal and hunting behavior, including skeletal analysis, is likely to be of interest

    Loss of Nef-mediated CD3 down-regulation in the HIV-1 lineage increases viral infectivity and spread

    Nef is an accessory protein of primate lentiviruses that is essential for efficient replication and pathogenesis of HIV-1. A conserved feature of Nef proteins from different lentiviral lineages is the ability to modulate host protein trafficking and down-regulate a number of cell surface receptors to enhance replication and promote immune evasion. Notably, the inability of Nef to down-regulate CD3 from infected T cells distinguishes HIV-1 Nef and its direct simian precursors from other primate lentiviruses. Why HIV-1 does not employ this potential immune evasion strategy is not fully understood. Using chimeric HIV-1 constructs expressing lentiviral Nef proteins that differ in their ability to down-modulate CD3, we show that retaining CD3 on the surface of infected primary T cells results in increased viral replication and cell-to-cell spread. We identified increased expression of envelope (Env) trimers at the cell surface and increased Env incorporation into virions as the determinants for the Nef- and CD3-dependent enhancement of viral infectivity. Importantly, this was independent of Nef-mediated antagonism of the host restriction factor SERINC5. CD3 retention on the surface of infected primary T cells also correlated with increased T cell signaling, activation, and cell death during cell-to-cell spread. Taken together, our results show that loss of an otherwise conserved function of Nef has a positive effect on HIV-1 replication, allowing for more efficient replication while potentially contributing to HIV-1 pathogenesis by triggering T cell activation and cell death during viral spread

    The Paradox of Astroglial Ca2+ Signals at the Interface of Excitation and Inhibition

    Astroglial networks constitute a non-neuronal communication system in the brain and are acknowledged modulators of synaptic plasticity. A sophisticated set of transmitter receptors in combination with distinct secretion mechanisms enables astrocytes to sense and modulate synaptic transmission. This integrative function evolved around intracellular Ca2+ signals, by and large considered as the main indicator of astrocyte activity. Regular brain physiology meticulously relies on the constant reciprocity of excitation and inhibition (E/I). Astrocytes are metabolically, physically, and functionally associated to the E/I convergence. Metabolically, astrocytes provide glutamine, the precursor of both major neurotransmitters governing E/I in the central nervous system (CNS): glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Perisynaptic astroglial processes are structurally and functionally associated with the respective circuits throughout the CNS. Astonishingly, in astrocytes, glutamatergic as well as GABAergic inputs elicit similar rises in intracellular Ca2+ that in turn can trigger the release of glutamate and GABA as well. Paradoxically, as gliotransmitters, these two molecules can thus strengthen, weaken or even reverse the input signal. Therefore, the net impact on neuronal network function is often convoluted and cannot be simply predicted by the nature of the stimulus itself. In this review, we highlight the ambiguity of astrocytes on discriminating and affecting synaptic activity in physiological and pathological state. Indeed, aberrant astroglial Ca2+ signaling is a key aspect of pathological conditions exhibiting compromised network excitability, such as epilepsy. Here, we gather recent evidence on the complexity of astroglial Ca2+ signals in health and disease, challenging the traditional, neuro-centric concept of segregating E/I, in favor of a non-binary, mutually dependent perspective on glutamatergic and GABAergic transmission

    Network representations of non-equilibrium steady states: Cycle decompositions, symmetries and dominant paths

    Non-equilibrium steady states (NESS) of Markov processes give rise to non-trivial cyclic probability fluxes. Cycle decompositions of the steady state offer an effective description of such fluxes. Here, we present an iterative cycle decomposition exhibiting a natural dynamics on the space of cycles that satisfies detailed balance. Expectation values of observables can be expressed as cycle "averages", resembling the cycle representation of expectation values in dynamical systems. We illustrate our approach in terms of an analogy to a simple model of mass transit dynamics. Symmetries are reflected in our approach by a reduction of the minimal number of cycles needed in the decomposition. These features are demonstrated by discussing a variant of an asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP). Intriguingly, a continuous change of dominant flow paths in the network results in a change of the structure of cycles as well as in discontinuous jumps in cycle weights.Comment: 3 figures, 4 table

    Dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica of the distal ulna: a case report and review of the literature

    Dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica (DEH) or Trevor's Disease is a very rare disease with an estimated incidence of one in 1.000.000. The majority of cases reported affect the lower limb and only 25 case reports of 33 cases with affection of the upper limb have been published. Here we present a case of DEH affecting the distal ulnar epiphysis and the lunate in an eleven-year-old girl, a DEH location described extremely rarely before. We firstly do not only present clinical and radiological findings (plane radiographs, CT, MRI), but also the surgical approach and the histopathological results of DEH in this uncommon location. Although extremely rare, DEH should be considered also in non-typical locations

    Theory of impedance networks: The two-point impedance and LC resonances

    We present a formulation of the determination of the impedance between any two nodes in an impedance network. An impedance network is described by its Laplacian matrix L which has generally complex matrix elements. We show that by solving the equation L u_a = lambda_a u_a^* with orthonormal vectors u_a, the effective impedance between nodes p and q of the network is Z = Sum_a [u_{a,p} - u_{a,q}]^2/lambda_a where the summation is over all lambda_a not identically equal to zero and u_{a,p} is the p-th component of u_a. For networks consisting of inductances (L) and capacitances (C), the formulation leads to the occurrence of resonances at frequencies associated with the vanishing of lambda_a. This curious result suggests the possibility of practical applications to resonant circuits.
