The third sector and social care for older people in England: towards an explanation of its contrasting contributions in residential care, domiciliary care and day care

This paper reviews the historical and recent development of the third sector in social care services for older people, and uses this as a springboard to develop a typology to capture in stylised form the diversity of providers within the sector. After reviewing a range of evidence concerning the nature of the third sector’s relative contribution, three propositions are developed to explain why this balance varies so significantly between residential care, domiciliary care and day care. First, differences in the character of the regulatory regime, reflecting both the historical legacy of market development and different attributes of the services and their users; second, the nature of the demand for, and supply of, volunteers; and third, variations in the internal composition of the third sector. The last proposition underscores the importance of attending to internal variety within the third sector in understanding its contribution to the broader mixed economy of care

Mixed methods in health care research. Paradigms and philosphy

When to use mixed methods is one of the most challenging issues that health care researchers currently face. The predominance of quantitative methods have not been enough to respond to many relevant questions on health care, that need a multiple approach. Mixed methods have been developed to tackle those problems that pose a complex intervention, or have different and more than two interacting components within the experimental and control interventions, and so many other situations. "UhuRuto" and Other Leviathans: the International Criminal Court and the Kenyan Political Order

The International Criminal Court’s intervention in Kenya emerged from a complex and contested political history, with different actors advocating for domestic solutions and others arguing for an international legal process in The Hague. Earlier positions have been disavowed and others have changed in the dynamic Kenyan political environment. The icc intervention has produced a number of political effects, including the imbrication of the icc process with electoral politics. This article takes up the case study of the Kenyan situation as a site of political contestation mediated through legal discourse. It considers these dynamics on two registers: at the geopolitical level (considering the relationships between the icc, the African Union, and the United Nations Security Council) as well as at the domestic level (both state and civil society). By tracing the discourses through which these contestations transpire, this article highlights some of the themes, strategies, and practices through which the icc’s intervention has been received.</jats:p

With the availability of relatively easy-to-use tools for online video creation and distribution, people are increasingly producing videos not just for artistic expression, but also as a form of communication. This article examines two types of online video conversations, one within a specific online subculture, and one a series of responses to one particularly wellknown video. Videos lend themselves to the expression of ambiguity, contradictory meanings, taboo topics, and emotions. STEP Category: Education AbroadI am going to Valencia, Spain summer of 2019 through an ISA study abroad program. I will depart from the United States on June 26, 2019 and will return from my experience abroad on August 4, 2019. I am registered to take two classes (six credit hours) at the University of Valencia in the heart of the historic city, which fulfill the diversification requirement for my Spanish major. I plan to enroll in Spanish Cinema and Spanish Culture with Spanish Literature (Neoclassism to contemporary) as my back up course. While I will be taking classes during my time abroad, I will be learning about the history of Valencia and Spain, practicing my speaking skills, experiencing the culture, and growing as a global citizen. My 40 days abroad will be spent soaking up as much Spanish culture and customs as possible and shifting my perspective of the world. Brownian couplings, convexity, and shy-ness

Benjamini, Burdzy, and Chen (2007) introduced the notion of a shy coupling: a coupling of a Markov process such that, for suitable starting points, there is a positive chance of the two component processes of the coupling staying at least a given positive distance away from each other for all time. Among other results, they showed that no shy couplings could exist for reflected Brownian motions in C-2 bounded convex planar domains whose boundaries contain no line segments. Here we use potential-theoretic methods to extend this Benjamini et al.
