Computationally efficient stratified flow wet angle correlation for high resolution simulations

    Get PDF
n high resolution two-phase pipe flow simulations, such as slug capturing simulation for liquid-gas pipe flow, explicit calculation of stratified flow wet angle has been proposed to improve computational speed of simulations. Most phenomenological and approximate models for obtaining reliable predictions for stratified flow wet angle employ iterative methods or contain long explicit equations which reduce computational efficiency of these models in high-resolution simulations. Therefore, the aim of this study is to adapt a simple mathematical model for predicting stratified flow wet angle to achieve computationally efficient high-resolution liquid-gas pipe flow simulations

An Approximation to the Cross Sections of Z_l Boson Production at CLIC by Using Neural Networks

In this work, the possible dynamics associated with leptophilic Z_l boson at CLIC (Compact Linear Collider) have been investigated by using artificial neural networks (ANNs). These hypotetic massive boson Z_l have been shown through the process e+e- -> M+M-. Furthermore, the invariant mass distributions for final muons have been consistently predicted by using ANN. For these highly non-linear data, we have constructed consistent empirical physical formulas (EPFs) by appropriate feed- forward ANN. These ANN-EPFs can be used to derive further physical functions which could be relevant to studying Z_l.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

Excited muon searches at the FCC based muon-hadron colliders

We study the excited muon production at the FCC based muon-hadron colliders. We give the excited muon decay widths and production cross section. We deal with the μp→μ⋆q→μγq\mu p\rightarrow\mu^{\star}q\rightarrow\mu\gamma q process and we plot the transverse momentum, rapidity and invariant mass distributions of final state particles to get the discovery cuts. By using discovery cuts, we get the mass limits for excited muons. It is shown that the discovery limits on the mass of μ⋆\mu^{\star} are 2.2 TeV, 5.9 TeV and 7.5 TeV for μ63\mu63-FCC, μ750\mu750-FCC and μ1500\mu1500-FCC, respectively.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, version of published in Adv. An artificial neural network application on nuclear charge radii

The artificial neural networks (ANNs) have emerged with successful applications in nuclear physics as well as in many fields of science in recent years. In this paper, by using (ANNs), we have constructed a formula for the nuclear charge radii. Statistical modeling of nuclear charge radii by using ANNs has been seen as to be successful. Also, the charge radii, binding energies and two-neutron separation energies of Sn isotopes have been calculated by implementing of the new formula in Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) calculations. The results of the study shows that the new formula is useful for describing nuclear charge radii.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

External Support to Schools on Probation: Getting a Leg Up?

    Get PDF
In 1996, the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) began implementing a new school accountability policy designed to improve student performance by providing a combination of consequences and support to low-performing schools. The center point of the accountability system, the Chicago school probation policy, designates schools as being on probation if fewer than 15% (later raised to 20%) of their students score at grade-level norms on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills in reading. When placed on probation, schools face the consequences of decreased autonomy and the threat of more severe sanctions. At the same time, probation schools receive direct assistance from several different sources through the policy\u27s external support system. The purpose of the support is to assist schools in strengthening their internal operations, raising expectations for students, and improving instruction so as to foster increased student achievement. This report is based on a two-year study of the design and implementation of the school probation policy in Chicago\u27s elementary schools. The school accountability system in Chicago has undergone changes since the end of this study as a result of new district leadership. The system now includes the use of additional assessment data and subject area tests, emphasis on progress and growth, and a focus on all schools. In spite of these changes, the assistance provided by probation managers and external partners has not changed. Therefore, the lessons learned from this study should still be relevant not only to CPS but also to other jurisdictions instituting similar policies

Small Satellite Trending & Reliability 2009-2018

This paper quantifies trends in small satellite utilization, reliability, and capability using a database of all small satellites (\u3c500 \u3ekg) launched from 2009 through 2018. By analyzing the full small satellite industry over time, this chapter will identify trends in implementation, success rates, and the reasons why some missions have failed. It will also address how to improve future missions to maintain the benefits of the lower cost space element while still achieving complex, multidimensional missions. This study identified several trends that illustrate the current state of the industry: 87% of small satellites with completed missions launched in the last decade were successful, including 90% of satellites launched in the last three years. 31% are still actively operating within their design life, including 52% launched in the last three years. Launch failures claimed 5% of small satellites. For those satellites that survive launch, roughly 4% fail within the first year. Mission-ending failures are most likely to be attributed to the communication subsystem (26%) or power system (18%). Unattributed failures account for another 23%, with the other subsystems accounting for the remainder. The 6U form factor saw three-fold growth in launch numbers in 2018 over all previous years combined
