Purpose – This study aims to investigate the preferences of 96 educational researchers on the use of digital technologies in scientific research. Design/methodology/approach – The study was designed as a quantitative-dominant sequential explanatory mixed-method research. Findings – Despite the spreading use of advanced technologies of big data and data mining, the most preferred digital technologies were found to be data analysis programs, databases and questionnaires. The primary reasons of using digital technology in scientific research were to collect data easily and quickly, to reduce research costs and to reach a higher number of participants. Originality/value – The use of digital technologies in scientific research is considered a revolutionary action, which creates innovative opportunities. Through digitalized life, probably for the first time in history, the educational researchers have analytical information, which we can benefit from more than the individual's own statements in research involving human factor. However, there are a few studies that investigated the preferences of educational researchers who use digital technologies in their scientific research

This study examines the Open Education Faculty Quality Ambassadors case as a crowdsources example in the context of the Quality Ambassadors Project. In the context of the study, qualitative case research method was adopted; Data were collected through interview and observation. According to the research findings obtained through interviews, being a Quality Ambassador is associated with the themes of success, belonging and contribution. One of the main reasons that triggers being a Quality Ambassador is to share students' own experiences with the Open Education System and other students and to enrich their learning processes in this way. Students who are Quality Ambassadors have generally been more successful academically due to the responsibilities and activities they have undertaken, and they have developed skills such as an investigative approach and critical perspective. There are opinions that the activities carried out as the Quality Ambassador improve the existing contents and increase the Quality of the Open Education System. The findings obtained from the observation notes show that Quality Ambassadors are more involved in the system and their institutional affiliation as a student has increased

SummaryObjectiveTo examine the expression of Mullerian inhibiting substance (MIS) in papillary thyroid cancer.Materials and methodsThe MIS expression was examined by studying the immunohistochemistry in deparafinized sections prepared from tissue blocks of patients who were diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer, as given in the pathology archive records (n = 23).ResultsIn all the cases studied, 50% (n = 10) showed strong staining and 50% showed moderate staining. The percentage of staining was found to be 94.2 ± 3.1% in strongly stained cases and 92.2 ± 2.1% in moderately stained cases. Normal thyroid tissues neighboring the tumor did not display any staining.ConclusionThe MIS expression can be used as a significant tool in differential diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer and also to shed light on its etiopathogenesis

    Get PDF
Purpose: To investigate the effect of subchronic duloxetine treatment on high light-induced anxietyrelated behaviors in Wistar rats. Methods: Adult male Wistar rats (n = 30) were randomly assigned to three groups of rats (10 rats/group): control group, 30 mg/kg duloxetine group, and 60 mg/kg duloxetine group. Intraperitoneal injection of duloxetine was given once a day for ten days. The anxiolytic effect of duloxetine in the rats was assessed using light/dark box (LDB) anxiety test. Results: Anxiety-related behaviors were significantly reduced in duloxetine-treated rats, when compared with control group. The reductions were not dose-dependent (light zone time and latency time were significantly increased, while dark zone time decreased significantly, p < 0.05). The number of rearings significantly increased in 30 mg/kg duloxetine group, relative to control and 60 mg/kg duloxetine groups (p < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences in the number of light-todark entrances among the groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: These results show that subchronic treatment with duloxetine alleviates anxiety-related behaviors in Wistar rats

Objectives: The present study aims to investigate the role of oxidant-antioxidant status in young women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).Material and methods: Seventy-one women with PCOS and 53 healthy controls are compared in aspect of demographic characteristics, biochemical data, hormones, and oxidant-antioxidant status. Results: The PCOS group had significantly lower zinc, higher malondialdehyde and gluthathione peroxidase and lower serum catalase levels than the control group (p = 0.016, p < 0.001, p = 0.043 and p = 0.025 respectively). The PCOS patients with IR had significantly higher malondialdehyde, lower catalase and serum zinc levels than the PCOS patients without IR (p = 0.015, p = 0.010, p = 0.001 respectively). The infertile PCOS patients had significantly higher malondialdehyde, lower catalase and serum zinc levels than the fertile PCOS patients (p = 0.022, p = 0.045,p = 0.001 respectively). There was a statistically significant and positive correlation between HOMA-IR and malondialdehyde values (r = 0.523, p = 0.001), between HOMA-IR and glutathione peroxidase values (r = 0.468, p = 0.001) and between HOMA-IR and zinc values (r = 0.601, p = 0.001). There was a statistically significant and negative correlation between HOMA-IR and catalase values (r = –0.493, p = 0.001).Conclusions: The patients with PCOS are under oxidative stress and this oxidative stress seems to be the highest in patients with IR and with infertility. Despite the prominent increase in the oxidative stress, there was a variation in the antioxidant response

Smart woven fabrics with portable and wearable vibrating electronics

    No full text
© AUTEX.The portable and wearable instrumented fabrics capable of measuring biothermal variable is essential for drivers, especially long-distance drivers. Here we report on portable and wearable devices that are able to read the temperature of human body within the woven fabric. The sensory function of the fabric is achieved by temperature sensors, soldered on conductive threads coated with cotton. The presence of stainless steel wires gives these materials conductive properties, enabling the detection of human body temperature and transmitting the signal form sensors to the motors on the fabric. When body temperature decreases, hardware/software platforms send a signal to the vibration motors in order to stimulate the driver. The ‘smart woven fabric’-sensing architecture can be divided into two parts: a textile platform, where portable and wearable devices acquire thermal signals, and hardware/ software platforms, to which a sensor sends the acquired data, which send the signals to the vibration motors
