    Kernel density classification and boosting: an L2 sub analysis

    Kernel density estimation is a commonly used approach to classification. However, most of the theoretical results for kernel methods apply to estimation per se and not necessarily to classification. In this paper we show that when estimating the difference between two densities, the optimal smoothing parameters are increasing functions of the sample size of the complementary group, and we provide a small simluation study which examines the relative performance of kernel density methods when the final goal is classification. A relative newcomer to the classification portfolio is “boosting”, and this paper proposes an algorithm for boosting kernel density classifiers. We note that boosting is closely linked to a previously proposed method of bias reduction in kernel density estimation and indicate how it will enjoy similar properties for classification. We show that boosting kernel classifiers reduces the bias whilst only slightly increasing the variance, with an overall reduction in error. Numerical examples and simulations are used to illustrate the findings, and we also suggest further areas of research

    Light physical activity is positively associated with cognitive performance in older community dwelling adults.

    OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the associations between an objective measure of different intensities of physical activity, upper- and lower-limb muscle strength and psychomotor performance and set-shifting domains of cognitive executive function in older adults. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: From the Tasmanian Older Adult Cohort Study, 188 community-dwelling older adults (53.7% female; mean age±SD 63.98±7.3 years) undertook 7-day physical activity behaviour monitoring using an accelerometer. Dynamometers were used to assess leg extension strength. The Trail Maker Tests were used to measure psychomotor processing speed and set-shifting performance. RESULTS: When controlling for age, smoking history, alcohol intake, educational achievement and neuropsychological functioning, higher levels of light physical activity, but not sedentary behaviour or moderate or vigorous physical activity, was found to be associated with better set-shifting performance. Neither physical activity behaviour or muscle strength were found to be associated with psychomotor performance. In addition, older age, greater alcohol intake, and lower levels of educational attainment, verbal learning and memory performance were significantly associated with lower scores on the set-shifting task; whereas older age and reduced neuropsychological functioning were associated with lower psychomotor processing speed scores. CONCLUSIONS: Light physical activity is associated with higher executive functioning in community-dwelling older adults and this strengthens the evidence supporting exercise as a neuroprotective agent. Further studies are needed to understand why light physical activity behaviour positively influences executive functioning, and how such physical activity can be implemented into the daily routine of older adults

    Effectiveness of a community football programme on improving physiological markers of health in a hard-to-reach male population: the role of exercise intensity

The present study evaluated the effectiveness of participation in recreational football during a community health programme, on physiological markers of health within a hard to reach population. Nine men (Age: 33 ± 9 years, Mass: 75.4 ± 13.7 kg, Height: 1.74 ± 0.07 m and Body Fat: 19 ± 2%) were recruited to participate in the study in collaboration with an English Premier League Football Club. Participants completed the 12-week football-based programme which included two coached football sessions each week. Physiological tests for blood pressure, resting heart rate, cholesterol and an anthropometrical test for body composition were completed at three time points during the study (Weeks – 1, 6 and 12) in an attempt to evaluate the impact of the intervention on health. During each training session, measurements of intensity (%HRmax, identified from the yoyo intermittent level 1 test), duration and rating of perceived exertion were made. The 12-week programme (mean HRmax throughout programme = 75 ± 4% beats min−1; mean RPE throughout programme = 6 ± 1) elicited few changes in physiological markers of health with the only significant change been a decrease in resting heart rate from weeks 6 to 12 (87 ± 22 beats min−1 at week-6, to 72 ± 17 beats min−1; p < 0.05). These data would suggest that the current community football-related health project was not effective in improving physiological markers of health, but was able to maintain their level of health. A lack of improvement may be due to the low intensity of sessions and a lack of coach education for the promotion of sessions that aim to improve health

    On the derivative of the associated Legendre function of the first kind of integer order with respect to its degree

    In our recent works [R. Szmytkowski, J. Phys. A 39 (2006) 15147; corrigendum: 40 (2007) 7819; addendum: 40 (2007) 14887], we have investigated the derivative of the Legendre function of the first kind, PÎœ(z)P_{\nu}(z), with respect to its degree Îœ\nu. In the present work, we extend these studies and construct several representations of the derivative of the associated Legendre function of the first kind, PΜ±m(z)P_{\nu}^{\pm m}(z), with respect to the degree Îœ\nu, for m∈Nm\in\mathbb{N}. At first, we establish several contour-integral representations of ∂PΜ±m(z)/∂Μ\partial P_{\nu}^{\pm m}(z)/\partial\nu. They are then used to derive Rodrigues-type formulas for [∂PΜ±m(z)/∂Μ]Îœ=n[\partial P_{\nu}^{\pm m}(z)/\partial\nu]_{\nu=n} with n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}. Next, some closed-form expressions for [∂PΜ±m(z)/∂Μ]Îœ=n[\partial P_{\nu}^{\pm m}(z)/\partial\nu]_{\nu=n} are obtained. These results are applied to find several representations, both explicit and of the Rodrigues type, for the associated Legendre function of the second kind of integer degree and order, Qn±m(z)Q_{n}^{\pm m}(z); the explicit representations are suitable for use for numerical purposes in various regions of the complex zz-plane.     Comparative assessment of filtration- and precipitation-based methods for the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses from wastewater

    Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has been widely used to track levels of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the rapid expansion of WBE, many methods have been used and developed for virus concentration and detection in wastewater. However, very little information is available on the relative performance of these approaches. In this study, we compared the performance of five commonly used wastewater concentration methods for the detection and quantification of pathogenic viruses (SARS-CoV-2, norovirus, rotavirus, influenza, and measles viruses), fecal indicator viruses (crAssphage, adenovirus, pepper mild mottle virus), and process control viruses (murine norovirus and bacteriophage Phi6) in laboratory spiking experiments. The methods evaluated included those based on either ultrafiltration (Amicon centrifugation units and InnovaPrep device) or precipitation (using polyethylene glycol [PEG], beef extract-enhanced PEG, and ammonium sulfate). The two best methods were further tested on 115 unspiked wastewater samples. We found that the volume and composition of the wastewater and the characteristics of the target viruses greatly affected virus recovery, regardless of the method used for concentration. All tested methods are suitable for routine virus concentration; however, the Amicon ultrafiltration method and the beef extract-enhanced PEG precipitation methods yielded the best recoveries. We recommend the use of ultrafiltration-based concentration for low sample volumes with high virus titers and ammonium levels and the use of precipitation-based concentration for rare pathogen detection in high-volume samples. IMPORTANCE As wastewater-based epidemiology is utilized for the surveillance of COVID-19 at the community level in many countries, it is crucial to develop and validate reliable methods for virus detection in sewage. The most important step in viral detection is the efficient concentration of the virus particles and/or their genome for subsequent analysis. In this study, we compared five different methods for the detection and quantification of different viruses in wastewater. We found that dead-end ultrafiltration and beef extract-enhanced polyethylene glycol precipitation were the most reliable approaches. We also discovered that sample volume and physico-chemical properties have a great effect on virus recovery. Hence, wastewater process methods and start volumes should be carefully selected in ongoing and future wastewater-based national surveillance programs for COVID-19 and beyond

    The impact of participation in Diversity Field Fora on farmer management of millet and Sorghum varieties in Mali

    Malian farmers have been cultivating millet and sorghum for millennia, but they are slow to adopt and develop modern varieties because it is difficult to observe the difference in yields in their fields, given the challenging local growing conditions. Farmer participatory approaches are therefore recommended. This paper applies an instrumental variables method to survey data from Mali to evaluate the impacys of Diversity Field Fora, a type of farmer field school which aims to boost millet and sorghum yields by showing farmers how to manage diverse varieties. Impact indicators are expected and recalled millet and sorghum yields. the total number of unique attributes of millet and sorghum varieties stocked as seed, and the relative deprivation of the household farm with respect to these indicators. The findings suggest the project has had results at one of two sites where it has been implemented with the same local leadership and more intensively over a longer time frame

    Differences in symptoms and cardiopulmonary responses to Treadmill versus Cycle cardiopulmonary exercise testing and comparison with the 6MWT in ILD

    Aims: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is used for diagnostic and prognostic reasons in Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD). Our aims were to compare symptoms and cardiopulmonary responses between a) cycle and treadmill walking and b) between CPET and the 6MWT. Methods: 18 ILD patients (6 IPF; 12M), mean (SD) age 65.4 (12.6), FVC% pred. 72.7 (20.7), DLCO% pred. 42.2 (13.4) underwent CPET by cycle ergometry (C-CPET) and treadmill walking (T-CPET) in random order, with 30-45 min rest between tests, on a single session. On a second session 3-7 days apart, patients performed the 6MWT. Oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate (HR), breathlessness (BORG score) and leg fatigue/exertion (RPE scale) were recorded at rest, peak and at each minute of the 3-min recovery. We used the sign rank test with the null hypothesis of no difference between responses to the 3 tests of multiple CPET and symptom parameters. Results: Data were consistent with no differences between C-CPET and T-CPET in cardiopulmonary parameters (PeakVO2 p value=0.4, AT_VO2 p= 0.5, Peak VE/VCO2 p= 0.5, Peak VE/VO2 = 0.8). Desaturation (∆SpO2) was similar between T- CPET and C-CPET (p= 0.4) or 6MWT (0.7) but differed between C-CPET and 6MWT (p=0.03). The 3-minute SpO2 recovery was slower in T-CPET than the other tests. Change in HR (∆HR) and 3-min recovery was similar between CPET modes (p=0.1) but statistically lower in the 6MWT (p= 0.001). Breathlessness was greater in T-CPET than C-CPET (∆BORG p= 0.04) and recovery slower than the other two tests. Patients with CTD-ILD reported a preference for T-CPET. Summary/Conclusions: Cardiopulmonary parameters can be derived accurately from both types of CPET. The drop in oxygen saturation at the 6MWT was similar to that of the maximal T-CPET so, it can be used in ILD patients to estimate level of desaturation, even though the 6MWT underestimates the delay in SpO2 recovery.
