    Modified Gravity Makes Galaxies Brighter

We investigate the effect of modifed gravity with screening mechanisms, such as the chameleon or symmetron models, upon the structure of main sequence stars. We find that unscreened stars can be significantly more luminous and ephemeral than their screened doppelgangers. By embedding these stars into dwarf galaxies, which can be unscreened for values of the parameters not yet ruled out observationally, we show that the cumulative effect of their increased luminosity can enhance the total galactic luminosity. We estimate this enhancement and find that it can be considerable given model parameters that are still under experimental scrutiny. By looking for systematic offsets between screened dwarf galaxies in clusters and unscreened galaxies in voids, these effects could form the basis of an independent observational test that can potentially lower the current experimental bounds on the model independent parameters of these theories by and order of magnitude or more.Comment: 16 pages, six figure

The Chiton Radula: A Unique Model for Biomineralization Studies

Advanced Topics in Biomineralization is a compendium of current topics focusing on processes of formation, organization, as well as mineralization of novel structural materials. From enchondral ossification to the application of biomineralized cement, the subject of biomineralization encompasses a range of diverse disciplines including molecular biology, supramolecular chemistry, materials science and engineering. A common theme in all these areas of research in biomineralization is the ability to utilize strategies from Nature to create functional materials. By understanding Nature’s tools to make strong and tough materials, similar properties can be endowed into man-made materials in the near future. [Book Synopsis

Change in urban arterial street design

Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2007.Includes bibliographical references (p. 84-91).The highway-building industry and highway governance was born in the minds of progressive engineers bent on ushering in a new era of efficiency, progress and modern transport. Governance and standards in California heavily influenced other state highway organizations. This research traces the evolution of values in urban arterial street design and standards in the United States and California. For nearly 100 years, the design criteria of geometric street standards have been based on increasing automobility, as if without end. Since the 1960s, liability concerns have guided significant changes in design standards, mostly based on passive driver safety design. Since then, legal action has given rise to bicycle and ADA-based design standards. Right-of-way constraints have lowered minimum widths and "flexibility" has impacted design philosophy and process. However, these latter forces are not driving fundamental or enforceable change to design standards. Change to mandatory standards remains driven by automobility and liability concerns. Despite conventional standards, unconventional values manifest in the design and planning of streets.(cont.) Using the case of El Camino Real in Palo Alto, this research explores the difficulty of implementing unconventional street design through the process of changing standards. It then draws on the case of Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles to demonstrate that individual projects under local jurisdiction are more likely to impact the design of streets. Further research is warranted on state highway relinquishment, the philosophy of context-sensitive design, and methods of selecting design speed.by Jeremy A. Shaw.M.C.P

Evaluating Streptococcus mutans strain dependent characteristics in a polymicrobial biofilm community

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate strain dependent differences of the cariogenic biofilm forming Streptococcus mutans within both simple and complex communities. Methods: A mono-species containing representative S. mutans clinical isolates (caries and non-caries), and a multispecies in vitro caries biofilm model containing Lactobacillus casei, Veillonella dispar, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Actinomyces naeslundii, and either of two representative S. mutans clinical isolates (caries and non-caries), was developed as a comparison model. Compositional analysis of total and live bacteria within biofilms, and transcriptional analysis of biofilm associated virulence factors were evaluated by live/dead PCR and quantitative PCR, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the architecture of biofilm. One-way analysis of variance and t-tests were used to investigate significant differences between independent groups of data. Results: Within a mono-species biofilm, different S. mutans strains responded similarly to one another during biofilm formation in different carbohydrate sources, with sucrose showing the highest levels of biofilm biomass and galactose showing the lowest. Within the polymicrobial biofilm system, compositional analysis of the bacteria within the biofilm showed that S. mutans derived from a caries-free patient was preferentially composed of both total and viable L. casei, whereas S. mutans derived from a caries patient was dominated by both total and viable S. mutans (p < 0.001). Normalized gene expression analysis of srtA, gtfB, ftf, spaP, gbpB, and luxS, showed a general upregulation within the S. mutans dominant biofilm. Conclusion: We were able to demonstrate that individual strains derived from different patients exhibited altered biofilm characteristics, which were not obvious within a simple mono-species biofilm model. Influencing the environmental conditions changed the composition and functionality S. mutans within the polymicrobial biofilm. The biofilm model described herein provides a novel and reproducible method of assessing the impact on the biofilm microbiome upon different environmental influences
